PRODUCT DESCRIPTION FAXSWITCH 2 is a sophisticated Line Sharing device which is designed to allow you to connect a FAX MACHINE or FAX/MODEM to your existing Telecom or PABX line. This product may not work correctly on telephone services provided over Optus or ACT pay TV cable. It provides you with the ultimate in flexibility, in order to meet a wide range of applications. This device is designed to operate on an ordinary single telephone line, with a PABX or other Multi Line telephone system. It provides you with a choice of THREE completely different methods of automatically receiving incoming FAX calls, on an existing voice line.
TRADITIONAL (AUTO-ANSWER) FAXSWITCH OPERATION VOICE PRIORITY FAXSWITCH OPERATION FAXSTREAM DUET OPERATION You can also receive incoming FAX calls using the FaxStream Duet method, in combination with either of the other methods. For outgoing calls, an EXCLUSION FACILITY is provided. This means that if the telephone line is already in use when the FAX device attempts to initiate a call, it will be blocked from the line and will not be allowed access to the line until the line is free. Similarly, telephones connected direct to the PHONE PORT outlet of FAXSWITCH 2 cannot ‘Barge-In’ on a FAX transmission. If you intend to use the Traditional (Auto-Answer) Faxswitch Method and you have more than 1 telephone socket in use on your line, then FAXSWITCH 2 will require professional installation. If you intend to use the Voice Priority Faxswitch Method, or you use a Cordless Phone with 1 or more handsets, then you will be able to simply connect FAXSWITCH 2 to ANY telephone socket on your line. It will take you just a few minutes. PABX applications will require professional installation. Please review this user guide thoroughly, select the operating mode which best suits your requirements and then follow carefully the appropriate installation and operating procedure.

THREE OPERATING METHODS FAXSWITCH 2 provides THREE separate methods of receiving Fax calls: 1. TRADITIONAL (AUTO-ANSWER) FAXSWITCH OPERATION This mode is based on the traditional method, where FAXSWITCH 2 will answer ALL incoming calls FIRST, briefly “listen” to this call for Fax Calling Tones (CNG Tones) and then connect the call to your Fax or Telephones. See page 5 for full details. * You will receive Fax Calls without your telephones ringing. * Your incoming Voice Callers will experience a short detection routine & delay before ringing through to your telephones. * This mode requires installation by a telephone technician where more than one telephone socket is used on your line. 2. VOICE PRIORITY FAXSWITCH OPERATION This mode is TRANSPARENT in operation, which means that FAXSWITCH 2 will not ANSWER the call. It operates with your telephone line in a unique manner and will not affect the operation of any of the other telephone devices that may be fitted to your line. See page 6 for full details. * Your incoming Voice Callers do not experience any routine or delay. * Call must be answered first, by a telephone or answering machine before an incoming Fax call can be detected and transferred. * Not recommended unless an Answering Machine is used. You can use a separate Answering Machine, or an Answering Machine combined within your Fax Device. * Easy User Installation 3. FAXSTREAM DUET OPERATION FAXSWITCH 2 also provides for those customers who wish to use the FaxStream Duet service, where a new additional telephone number, specifically for use as your Fax number, is added to your telephone line. See page 15 for full details. This facility works in conjunction with the other 2 modes, to also allow Fax reception on your normal phone number. * You need to use the FaxStream Duet service. * Your incoming Voice Callers do not experience any routine or delay. * Easy User Installation.

OPERATING PROCEDURE for Traditional Faxswitch method This method is based on the traditional Faxswitch method, where this unit will automatically answer ALL incoming calls FIRST after 2 rings. It will then briefly “listen” to this call for Fax Calling Tones (CNG Tones). If CNG tones are detected, FAXSWITCH 2 will RING your attached Fax Device and connect the incoming Fax Call to it. If CNG tones are not detected, FAXSWITCH 2 will RING all of the telephones attached to the PHONE PORT outlet. With this mode of operation, you will be able to receive Fax Calls WITHOUT your telephones ringing first. Incoming voice calls however will all be answered first by FAXSWITCH 2 and a short delay will be experienced by the caller before your telephones begin to ring. FAXSWITCH 2 will generate a ring, similar to the normal telephone exchange ring back to your callers until you are able to answer the line. Fax calls that are manually dialled (i.e. the caller has dialled your number but has not pressed the Send key) can be transferred to your Fax device, from any telephone on your line, by pressing 3 on your telephone. You should then hang up. Please Note - With this mode, all telephones connected to your telephone line must be connected direct to the LINE OUT port of FAXSWITCH 2. If you are only using one telephone on your line, or a single Cordless Telephone system, then you should connect this to the LINE OUT port of your unit. If you have other phones located on other telephone sockets on your line, then you will need to have a telephone technician “wire” your FAXSWITCH 2 direct to your incoming telephone line, ahead of your first telephone socket. This means that your Fax device will need to be positioned near this point, or you will need to fit additional wiring to allow the Fax device to be connected to an alternative socket. For further information, please call (07) 5596 5128. This procedure should be carried out by an ACMA approved telephone cabling technician. Please refer to your Yellow Pages section ‘Telephones & Systems Installation &/or Maintenance’. DIP SWITCH SETTINGS If you wish to set FAXSWITCH 2 to operate in this mode, please set : Dip Switch 1 to the OFF position.
National Communications Page 5
OPERATION PROCEDURE for Voice Priority Faxswitch method In this mode, FAXSWITCH 2 is set to VOICE PRIORITY operation and is TRANSPARENT so that your voice callers will not detect its presence. It will also work with all other telephone devices fitted to your line.
DIP SWITCH SETTINGS If you wish to set FAXSWITCH 2 to operate in this mode, set : Dip Switch 1 to the ON position.
OPERATION WHEN OFFICE IS ATTENDED Answer all of your incoming calls, on any phone and converse with your callers as normal. However if you hear a ‘beep’ soon after answering, then this call is an Auto-dialled Fax Transmission. FAXSWITCH 2 will also hear this ‘beep’ and will then automatically transfer this incoming Fax call to your Fax device. You will hear a ‘click’ following the ‘beep’ confirming that detection has taken place. Simply hang up and FAXSWITCH 2 will do the rest. This ‘beep’ is known as a CNG tone. They are sent every 3 seconds from almost all Fax machines. The above procedure will usually take place within 3 seconds of answering the call. In some areas it may be necessary to wait for the second CNG tone before hanging up. You will hear a ‘click’ on the line when the transfer has occurred. Simply hang up, FAXSWITCH 2 will do the rest. Occasionally you will also answer Manually Dialled Fax calls where the caller will request your Fax Device. You should ask the caller to press their Start/Transmit key. FAXSWITCH 2 will detect the CNG Tone and will redirect the incoming call to your Fax Device. You can now hang up. Alternatively you can also transfer the incoming caller to your Fax Device by pressing 3. This command will redirect the incoming call to your Fax Device. You can now hang up. A very small number of Fax machines do not send CNG tones. Should you ever receive a call from one of these machines, the line will be completely silent. You should transfer this call to your Fax (or Fax/ Modem) by pressing 3.
Page 6 National Communications
OPERATION WHEN OFFICE IS UNATTENDED OPERATION WITH AN ANSWERING MACHINE FAXSWITCH 2 will always allow your separate answering machine, connected to any telephone socket, to answer your calls when your site is unattended. Once the call has been answered, FAXSWITCH 2 will then listen for a CNG Tone, and if detected will redirect this Fax call to your Fax device and instruct your answering machine to reset. Voice calls are totally ignored by FAXSWITCH 2. It is strongly recommended that you re-record your ‘Out Going Message’ and leave 3-4 seconds of silence before speaking. This silence at the beginning of your message will allow FAXSWITCH 2 to detect the first CNG tone without interference from your message. This precaution will ensure quick and reliable Fax detection even with poor line conditions. Some answering machines when located on a separate telephone socket will not hang up when FAXSWITCH 2 takes the call from it. In this situation, you will need to connect your answering machine direct to the LINE OUT port outlet of FAXSWITCH 2.
OPERATION WITH AN ANSWERING MACHINE INTEGRATED WITHIN YOUR FAX DEVICE FAXSWITCH 2 can be set to DIVERT your incoming calls to your Fax/ Answering Machine after 8 rings, so that it can process your Fax or Voice call accordingly. If you wish to ENABLE this feature, please set: DIP SWITCH 4 to the ON position. OPERATION WHEN NOT USING AN ANSWERING MACHINE FAXSWITCH 2 can be set to DIVERT your incoming calls to your FaxMachine after 8 rings, so that it can receive a Fax Call when your site is unattended. However, should the call be a VOICE CALL, then they will also be answered by your FAX DEVICE. If you wish to ENABLE this feature, please set: DIP SWITCH 4 to the ON position. Because Voice calls can be answered by your Fax Device, we recommend that users that DO NOT USE an Answering Machine, should configure FAXSWITCH 2 for operation using the Traditional Faxswitch Method.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE for Traditional Faxswitch method When you use telephones on more than 1 telephone socket Please refer to the diagram on page 11
TELEPHONES ON MORE THAN ONE TELEPHONE SOCKET ARE USED. INSTALLATION MUST BE CARRIED OUT BY A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN.
1. The LINE IN port of FAXSWITCH 2 must be wired direct to the incoming telephone line at your MASTER TELEPHONE SOCKET. 2. All of your telephones, including all telephones located on different sockets must be wired direct from the LINE OUT port of FAXSWITCH 2. This is necessary to allow FAXSWITCH 2 to ring all telephones. 3. The Fax Device must be connected, or wired to the FAX MACHINE port of FAXSWITCH 2. If the Fax Machine has more than 1 port, use the LINE port. 4. This is normally accomplished by fitting a new telephone socket next to your original telephone socket (or fitting a new telephone socket on top of your original telephone socket). All telephone extensions are then transferred to this second telephone socket. Once this is done, the TELEPHONE LINE IN port of FAXSWITCH 2 is then connected to the original telephone socket. The TELEPHONE LINE OUT port of FAXSWITCH 2 is connected to the new telephone socket. This procedure should be carried out by an ACMA approved telephone cabling technician. Please refer to your Yellow Pages section ‘Telephones & Systems - Installation &/or Maintenance’ for the contact details of suitable technicians in your area. 5. If ADSL or CALLERID is used on this telephone line, please refer to pages 16-17.

Any Telephone Socket
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE For connection to a PABX LINE or other Multi-Line System FAXSWITCH 2 can be fitted to one specific line of a PABX type system, (usually the last choice line) which uses conventional PSTN telephone lines Once fitted, the system will operate exactly as described previously, for operation on the selected line. The same installation procedure is used for both the Traditional and Voice Priority operating methods. NOTE - A small number of sites use ISDN Digital telephone lines. In this situation, FAXSWITCH 2 cannot be fitted direct to these lines as described below. It must instead be connected to an Analogue extension of the Commander or PABX type system. Installation Procedure 1. The incoming telephone line, prior to the system controller should be connected to the TELEPHONE LINE IN port of FAXSWITCH 2. 2. The TELEPHONE LINE OUT port of FAXSWITCH 2 should be connected to the system controller. 3. The FAX DEVICE should then be connected to the FAX MACHINE port of FAXSWITCH 2. If the Fax Machine has more than 1 port, use the LINE port. 4. CONNECT the supplied 12VAC Power Supply and switch it ON. 5. SET your FAX DEVICE to it's AUTOMATIC RECEIVE MODE. Then SET your FAX DEVICE to ANSWER on the FEWEST RINGS possible. If Fax/ Phone switching settings are provided on your Fax Device, ensure that they are all DISABLED. 6. READ THIS USER GUIDE thoroughly to obtain a full understanding of the operation of this device.

FAXSTREAM DUET MODE FAXSWITCH 2 has been preprogrammed to also operate with the FaxStream Duet Service. This means that you can use it in conjunction with one of the other two FAXSWITCH 2 reception methods. You do not need to do anything other than fit your Fax Device to the FAX MACHINE port of FAXSWITCH 2 and have the service connected. You can also use it as your sole reception method, in which case you can connect it to ANY telephone socket, as per the installation diagram on page 13. This will take you just a few minutes to install. The FaxStream Duet service will allow a new additional telephone number to be allocated to the telephone line to which FAXSWITCH 2 is fitted, specifically for use as your FAX NUMBER. This service is available to nearly all customers that are connected to a Modern Telephone Exchange, at a cost of $6.00 per month (incl. GST). For further details on the connection of this new service, please call your Telephone Service provider. Whenever this new FAX NUMBER is then called, your telephone exchange will send a different ring down your telephone line. This FaxStream Duet ring pattern will be AUTOMATICALLY detected by FAXSWITCH 2 during the first incoming ring. FAXSWITCH 2 will then immediately answer this call and then connect the incoming Fax call to your FAX DEVICE. With this new service, your incoming Fax calls will connect direct to your FAX DEVICE. The telephone or telephones connected to the LINE OUT port of the FAXSWITCH 2 will NOT RING whenever a Fax call has been received. PABX NOTE - The FaxStream Duet service is not available for connection to a PABX line, that is in rotary with other lines. If you plan to use FaxStream Duet with a PABX system, the line selected CANNOT be in Rotary.
National Communications Page 15
OPERATION WITH ADSL FAX SWITCH 2 is compatible with the use of ADSL on the same telephone line, PROVIDING you use a HIGH QUALITY ADSL FILTER. To avoid Fax Detection problems, it is ESSENTIAL to fit a SINGLE High Quality ADSL filter immediately ahead of FAX SWITCH 2. If you use ADSL2 or ADSL2+, you MUST ensure that your filter is suitable for whichever service type you use. ADSL filters cannot be used for the newer ADSL2 or ADSL2+ services. ADSL2 filters cannot be used for the newer ADSL2+ service. Failure to do so, or use of additional ADSL filters connected direct to your telephones, WILL cause problems in the operation of your FAX SWITCH 2 and ADSL service. Please Note - Most ADSL FILTERS, designed for separate connection to each telephone on your line (as usually supplied with ADSL modems) are not suitable. We strongly recommend use of the High Quality C10 brand ADSL FILTER (model C10245E), as they provide the high efficiency filtering required to detect CNG Fax Tones. Further information on the C10245E ADSL filter can be viewed at : www.c10.com.au You can purchase this model from your Dealer, any TELSTRA shop, or on line at : www.natcomm.com.au for $35.00 incl GST.

USING CALLER ID (CLI) I f you plan to use CallerID (CLI) on your telephone line, then you will need
to set Dip Switch 3 to the ON position. See page 18 for details of Dip Switch settings. This is because FAX SWITCH 2, in its default configuration, does NOT ALLOW the first ring of an incoming call to pass through to the telephones connected to the TELEPHONE LINE OUT port. It does this whether FAX SWITCH 2 is set to operate in the Voice Priority or Traditional Faxswitch modes. When CallerID (CLI) is connected to a telephone line, the callers phone number (unless the caller elects not to send this information) is sent as a modem type transmission of information before the first full telephone ring of incoming telephone calls. In the default configuration of FAX SWITCH 2, this information would not be received by the CLI reading device. When Dip Switch 3 is set to the ON position, FAX SWITCH 2 will pass incoming calls immediately to the telephones connected to the TELEPHONE LINE OUT port so that they can display the CLI information. The only difference you will experience with this switch change is that the telephones connected direct to the PHONE DEVICE PORT will ring ONCE before stopping, when Fax calls are received. For this reason, it is best to leave Dip Switch 3 set to the OFF position unless CallerID (CLI) is used.
If SW3 is set to ON - CallerID (CLI) is used on this line.
If SW3 is set to OFF - CallerID (CLI) is NOT used on this line.

DIP SWITCH OPTIONS FAXSWITCH 2 is a sophisticated Line Sharing device which is designed to provide you with the ultimate in flexibility, in order to meet a wide range of customer applications. Four Dip Switches are located on the underside of the device, which allow you to individually configure your FAXSWITCH 2 solution. The function of each Dip Switch is described in detail elsewhere in this User Guide. A summary of the functions of each switch are detailed below : Dip Switch 1 is used to select between TRADITIONAL and VOICE PRIORITY Faxswitch operation. See pages 5-7 for further detail. Dip Switch 1 if set to ON, selects VOICE PRIORITY Faxswitch operation Dip Switch 1 if set to OFF, selects TRADITIONAL Faxswitch operation Dip Switch 2 is used when your Fax Device will not Dial Out. See page 19 for further detail. Dip Switch 2 if set to ON, configures Faxswitch 2 to overcome this problem Dip Switch 2 if set to OFF, selects normal operation Dip Switch 3 is used when you use CallerID on your telephone line. See page 17 for further detail. Dip Switch 3 if set to ON, allows CallerID operation. Dip Switch 3 if set to OFF, selects normal operation
Dip Switch 4 is used when you require you Fax Device to answer calls after 8 rings. See page 7 for further detail. Dip Switch 4 if set to ON, allows your Fax Device to Answer after 8 rings Dip Switch 4 if set to OFF, selects normal operation
Note - You must REMOVE POWER from FAXSWITCH and then reconnect it again to ensure that any Dip Switch changes are read.
Page 18 National Communications
TROUBLE SHOOTING FAX DEVICE WILL NOT DIAL FAX SWITCH 2 in its default configuration, is programmed to remove your FAX DEVICE from the telephone line and only connect your Fax Device to the telephone line when you are sending or receiving a Fax Transmission. By doing so, FAX SWITCH 2 can ENSURE that your FAX DEVICE will NEVER INTERFERE with an incoming or outgoing telephone call. A small number of Fax Devices have recently introduced a new ‘Line In Use’ facility which is designed to prevent Barge-In by your Fax when a telephone call is taking place. This would normally prevent your Fax Machine from Dialing Out from a telephone line switch. FAX SWITCH 2 incorporates a NEW High Voltage Line Level facility which should allow it to work with these new machines. However, should your Fax Device NOT DIAL out when connected to FAX SWITCH 2, then you should set Dip Switch 2 to the ON position. When Dip Switch 2 is set to the ON position, FAX SWITCH 2 will leave your Fax Device connected to your telephone line when your line is not in use. It will then remove it from the telephone line whenever you pick up a telephone to make an outgoing call or whenever you receive an incoming call. If you require Dip Switch 2 to be set to the ON position, you MUST set your FAX DEVICE to answer on TWO or MORE RINGS. This will ensure that your Fax Device does not interfere with incoming telephone calls. Providing you do so, this setting will not interfere with your Line Sharing requirements.
If SW2 is set to ON - Fax REQUIRES connection to the telephone line to dial
If SW2 is set to OFF -Fax DOES NOT REQUIRE connection to the line to dial
