Aventura Technologies  180 Adams Avenue  Hauppauge, NY  11788  (877) 707‐9600  www.aventuratechnologies.com  Instruction Manual Dual, SFP Based, 10/100 Ethernet Media Converter / Transceiver Model Numbers: FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP – Dual, SFP Based, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Transceiver © Copyright 2008, Aventura Technologies, Inc. INSTALLATION AND OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP has two independent transceivers, each operates as one half of a transceiver pair for the transmission of bi-directional Ethernet data, over one or two multimode or single-mode fiber/s. The unit uses industry standard Small Form-Factor, Pluggable (SFP) modules for connecting to the fiber media. A proper Aventura Technologies approved SFP module is selected by the customer to accommodate the type and number of fibers, as well as the transmission distance. Each transceiver in the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP converts a single 10/100base-T/TX Ethernet input to an optical fiber output. Each transceiver in the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP also converts an optical fiber input, returning over the same or different fiber, depending on SFP module selection, into a single 10/100baseT/TX Ethernet output. Each transceiver in the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP is configured to auto-negotiate the data rate on the UTP Ethernet port to either 10 or 100 Mbps and operating mode to either full or half-duplex. Additionally, each transceiver in the unit is configured to perform the MDI/MDIX sensing and switching automatically. This feature allows for the use of standard, straight through patch cords, without regard to the configuration (MDI or MDIX) of the device the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP unit is connected to. The data rate on each optical port of the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP is always 100Mbps, full-duplex. This unit is contained in a compact and rugged steel housing with internal dc voltage regulation. The detachable terminal block and LED indicators provide for easy installation and monitoring of Ethernet, optical link, and dc power status. The unit operates as either a surface mounted, modular, stand-alone device, or within a rack mounted card cage. INSTALLATION THE INSTALLATION OF THIS UNIT SHOULD BE MADE BY A QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSON(S) AND MUST CONFORM TO ALL LOCAL CODES. The physical outline and front/rear panel configuration of the unit is detailed in Figure 2. Mount the unit to a secure surface using #8 (3mm) hardware in two places. See Figure 3 for a full size mounting template. Be sure to allow sufficient room for the required minimum bend radius of the fiber cable used. POWER SOURCE The unit requires a +12VDC power source for proper operation. The DC input is diode protected against reverse polarity connection. In the USA and in Canada, for standalone surface mounted installation, an Aventura Technologies FBRPSUS12DC1A is supplied with this unit. Contact Aventura Technologies for ordering power supply units for use in countries other than the USA and Canada. When installed in a rack mounted card cage, the power for the unit is supplied from the card cage’s power supply. © Copyright 2008, Aventura Technologies, Inc. 2 POWER CONNECTION Power is supplied to the unit via a two-pin terminal block connector. Follow the labeling on the unit for proper connections of the +12 volt dc and ground leads. ETHERNET CONNECTION The UTP Ethernet connections are made via RJ-45 connectors on the front of the unit. For proper operation, the use of patch cords and/or cables rated Category-5 or better is required. FIBER CONNECTION The fiber optic connections vary, depending on the selection of SFP module. Refer to the instructions supplied with the SFP module for the proper procedure of installing the SFP module in the FBR2X1FE1FX-SFP unit, as well as for the proper procedure for connecting the fiber to the SFP module. STATUS INDICATORS Each unit provides the following LED status indicators to aid in installation and troubleshooting: POWER INDICATOR A bi-color LED indicator monitors the voltage at the unit’s input connector and the operating internal voltage of the module. The power status associated with this indicator is summarized below. Power Indicator Green Red Off Power Status Proper Input Voltage Present – Proper Internal Operating Voltage Present Proper Input Voltage Present – Internal Operating Voltage Faulty No Input Voltage Detected OPTICAL LINK INDICATOR A bi-color LED indicator for each transceiver monitors the power of, and proper synchronization with the optical input signal that is being received at the FBR-2X1FE1FX-SFP. The optical link status associated with this indicator is summarized below.
