job in the world? And what kind of President would he make? While his campaign started out as a big joke, the polls are now swaying in his favour, and like he points out, “If I weren’t a successful person, it wouldn’t work so well. Voters have great confidence in me because I really have been successful.” He is no doubt a showman, and yes even a TV ratings machine, but will he make the cut? Lillian gives her opinion.
This issue we have a collection of some really fabulous stories. When the art and science of feng shui first came into prominence with the earliest of Lillian Too’s books “The Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui”, it started a worldwide craze where everything feng shui and related became all the rage. Even primetime TV shows like FRIENDS and THE SIMPSONS had their token feng shui episodes. Then came the Zen period, when some advocates of “feng shui” started popularizing clutterclearing and minimalist living.
From the movie world, we feature Emma Watson. Everybody’s favourite witch from the Harry Potter era is now all grown up and finding her voice. She was appointed to the United Nations as a Women Goodwill Ambassador last year and has since made their women’s rights campaign HeForShe her own. Together with her humanitarian work, she continues to make movies at a prolific pace, with at least three soon-to-be-released films featuring big-name co-stars like Tom Hanks, Ethan Hawke and Luke Evans. She has a long bucket list, but looks to be checking off each task with great efficiency. We take a look at her Paht Chee chart with some interesting findings.
eptember for us is when we officially start gearing up for the coming year. We have just sent our Fortune & Feng Shui 2016 books for each of the 12 animal signs to print and these will be available for sale before the month is up. Lillian Too’s Feng Shui Extravaganza 2016 tickets are also available now through our usual channels (MPH, www.wofs.com and SISTIC) at Early Bird discounts for those who get their tickets early, so do book your seats soon!
Lillian was then approached by publishers to write about this minimalism and decluttering to further elaborate on her expertise. She thought about it, but then said, “minimalism is not feng shui!” In this issue, she introduces the art of Maximalist Living, a powerful mindset she has always subscribed to and lived by, one which assumes a state of abundance in one’s life always. This mode of living permeates one’s lifestyle from the way you think, to the way you dress, to the way you decorate your home… but try it! It is uplifting, it is liberating and it attracts truly fabulous good luck your way. Our personality this issue has to be Donald Trump, billionaire magnate and US Presidential hopeful. So does he really have what it takes to get picked for the top
On the business front, there is no success story quite like the Amazon.com story. Named after the greatest river in the world, Amazon.com has forever changed the face of the book industry, and is now conquering everything else. If you look at the Amazon River and how it meanders across South America, it resembles a mighty Water Dragon; in terms of total water flow, it is the biggest river in the world. Founder Jeff Bezos is a known believer and practitioner of feng shui, and the name he chose for his company surely was not one picked just by chance. Paht Chee with Phillip Lim
To have a lucky life, we need to ensure we have high levels of each of the 3 kinds of luck: Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Mankind Luck. Heaven luck is the luck potential we have when we are born, and we can go some way predicting this using Paht Chee analysis. Earth luck comes from our surroundings and we can predict its potential through Feng Shui. Mankind luck comes as a result of our own actions, behaviour and attitudes.

hen we look at our Paht Chee chart, among the most important things we look for is balance in our basket of elements. We need to identify what elements are deemed lucky for us by determining the strength of our self-element. In traditional practice, the consultant would recommend you add the required elements by advising on what colours are lucky for you, and may also recommend that you add the required element into your home. For example, for someone whose self-element is Strong
Earth, and lacking Metal element in their chart, we would ask them to wear colours that represent Metal - purple, silver, gold and white. We may also require that person to place either a bowl of coins beside their bed, or to place 6 dynasty coins tied with red string underneath their pillow. We may even go as far as asking them to sleep on a metal bedframe, as well as having a work desk made of metal. When it comes to Feng Shui however, we identify their Kua numbers based on their date of birth, which separates them into either East or West group people. We then say that East group people have lucky directions of East, North, South and Southeast. While West group people are luckier tapping West, Southwest, Northeast and Northwest. According to the original Pa Kua formula, we also know that each of the 8 directions represents an element. Thus North is of the Water element, South is of the Fire element, West and Northwest are of the Metal element, Southwest and Northeast are of the Earth element, and East and Southeast are of the Wood element. So how do we identify which kind of facing direction for our home would be the most ideal, taking into account both the Kua formula (from which we know our lucky and unlucky directions) as well as the principles of Paht Chee? If you refer to the table included, you can see how we have combined both formulas, making it easier for you to decide the best facing direction for both your Kua number, as well as from a Paht Chee perspective.

Let us look at a couple of examples: For a man born in the year 1965 (Year of the Snake) of Kua 8, whose self-element is Weak Earth: we know that this person belongs to the West group, and his lucky directions are Southwest, Northwest, West and Northeast. When you look at the chart, we see that for him, having a house that faces either Northeast or Southwest would be the most favorable since the chi element that comes from Northeast and Southwest are the elements of Earth. Since his self-element is Weak Earth, this means that Earth element is especially good for him. Of course, it would also be most advantageous for him to sleep and sit facing either Northeast or Southwest. However, if his self-element was Strong Earth, then selecting a house with a main entrance facing Northwest or West would be better for him, since Metal would be one of his beneficial elements. So in this case, he should also position his bed such that he sleeps with his head pointed either to the West or Northwest.

weak wood
Another example: a lady born in 1979 (Year of the Sheep) of Kua number 3, whose self-element is Weak Fire. In this case, her lucky directions would be North, South, East and Southeast. However, when we add the strength of her self-element into the equation, we find that of the four good directions, South, East and Southeast are more suitable for her Weak Fire. This is because South

brings her Fire element, while East and Southeast bring Wood. So for her, it is most advantageous to have a home that faces South, East or Southeast. She should also sleep in the South, East or Southeast room with her head pointed to one of these three directions as well. Of course, if her self-element were Strong Fire, then the most suitable direction for optimizing her luck would then be North.

ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING
DESIGNING LUCKY
SWIMMING POOLS
One of the greater luxuries of life is to be able to relax and enjoy the sanctity of one’s own personal swimming pool. To know that there is one place in the home you are able to unwind and be in touch with nature. So how do we go about designing our pool? There are a few things to think about when it comes to pool designs and these comprise the following factors: Size, Materials and Shape (SMS). Let us discuss the importance of size. There are many ways to design a pool, but there is a limit to how big or small a pool should be before it stops becoming a pool and ends up either as a water feature or lake.
A small sized pool where the walls dominate the space creates a claustrophbic experience
WHAT IS BIG AND WHAT IS SMALL?
Always avoid an oversized pool. No matter how impressive it may be or how much real estate you may own. The reason being, there comes a limit where the pool loses its intimate qualities and starts to imitate a public pool. So how do we begin? Start by thinking of the number of lanes a person is able to swim laterally Avoid pools that are too large for the space
80
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
through the pool. Always stick to 4-5 lanes but never more, as any excess would end up being a swim meet. In addition, always avoid incorporating swimming race lines as part of the design, as this would instantly cheapen the aesthetic quality of the pool. On the other spectrum, you shouldn’t have the pool smaller than two swimming lanes, as this would create a long narrow feature, which would emulate a landscape or lap pool design. The next element to consider is the surrounding areas adjacent to the pool. If we can only afford to set aside a small section of the house to build a pool, make sure that the pool is built in proportion to the surroundings. Avoid placing a small pool where the walls dominate the entire space. Doing so creates a claustrophobic, suffocating experience. Similarly, avoid building a pool that is too large for the space, as this causes the intimate relationship with the water to be lost and you will then start to feel as if you were cast away in an ocean.
www.fswmag.com
DESIGNS AND MATERIALS
Now that we have established the parameters on the size of the pool, we will need to start looking at materials. First off, we need to ensure that the pool materials we select do not match up with any tiles you have selected in any of the bathrooms. The second thing to look at are materials as a means to create features. Consider the use of motifs to create a central feature within the pool rather than the monotonous tile effect. By introducing a logo eff ect on the pool fl oor, you are able to pull the attention of the user to indicate a section of the pool is somewhat diff erent, and special. This is a great technique to use to indicate steps for entry into the pool, or to indicate a feature such as a hot / cold tub or jacuzzi.
The use of motifs as opposed to monotonous patterns helps differentiate different parts of the pool.
A wall of complementary height to the pool creates a balance effect.
The merging of elements can be done through the use of integrating the beauty of stone or timber as a mirror element to the pool. In this example, there is a symbiosis of form and materials between pool and wall. By introducing a wall that is similar in height as to the width of the pool creates a vertical element to balance out the longitudinal element of the pool. But the play of yin and yang, or opposites, allows the vertical dominating form of the wall to succumb to the feminine peanut form of the pool, creating an interesting, visual relationship.

CREATING INTIMACY
Now that we have understood how size and materials can affect our perception in appreciating a pool, how do we design it such that we are able to create a sense of intimacy? This comes down to how adventurous you are in designing the shape of the pool. The easiest shape is the rectilinear form, which is perfect for laps and general pool usage. But to introduce a special element into the pool feature, all we need to do is add a small element. In this scenario, the semi-circular form anchors a central viewing platform where the pool and deck intersects, creating a single prominent vantage from which to soak in the element of water and view. The daring “night sky” effect of this indoor pool offsets the monotony of the regular shape.
In this example, even though it is a public pool, the T-shaped form serves a dual purpose. First it indicates an entry / exit point into the pool, and secondly, it allows the pool to be visually split into two parts, whereby the square element indicates a shallower play area, while the rectilinear element indicates a lap pool. So when you consider incorporating a swimming pool into the home, always think of the following SMS elements. Make sure the size balances out with the surroundings, and is in itself a suitable size for swimming / playing in. And once you have determined the size, think of ways of how to play around with materials either through pattern or form. Finally, look at the shape and see how you can start with a rectilinear form and introduce another shape to create a node to serve as a highlight to the pool.
82
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
The semi-circular form creates a prominent vantage point.
In this example, the use of LED ceiling lights creates an artificial moonlit sky effect offering the experience of swimming under the stars (indoor). While the shape of the pool may seem to be regular, the use of an irregular wall pattern helps offset any monotony effect the room may have. The T-shape here, as well as making the pool more interesting, indicates an entry + exit point and allows the pool to visually be split into two parts.
