FibreFab - Optronics and JT Case Study JT is part-way through the Jersey gigabit project which will see the Island’s aging copper broadband network upgraded to a state-of-the-art fibre-to-the-home network providing super-fast Gigabit broadband to over 42,000 homes and businesses. As part of this upgrade programme, JT needed to greatly increase the fibre connectivity within the central offices to support links between switching equipment and the all fibre access network. FibreFab Ltd have developed a high density, compact connectivity solution under its Optronics brand that is at the heart of the JT central office upgrade. Programme Aims The first challenge was performing the central office fibre installation the quickest and most efficient way possible. The Optronics UltraSlim System and bespoke pre-terminated MTP Micro Cable assemblies enabled JT engineers to efficiently deploy nodes to stringent quality and time constraints. This system combined with the support from Optronics development team ensured JT was able to reduce its installation time from 3 days for traditional fusion splicing down to 1 day and in the process eliminated the costs associated with specially trained splicing teams. Speed of installation wasn’t the only requirement. The JT central offices have very restricted space. The UltraSlim Panel features a unique space-saving design with a depth of just 117mm compared to 300mm for traditional panels, ideal for fitting to patching frames with limited space between them.

OPTRONICS ULTRASLIM PANEL - (A STATE OF THE ART PATCH PANEL) A state of the art patch panel featuring factory cleaned and spliced fibre optic connectors. By moving the complicated and time consuming configuration of the patch panel into our quality controlled factory environment we can remove the requirement for trained engineers using complex and expensive splicing equipment on site. Plus, using advanced MPO Technology this panel offers a single click, “Plug and Play” connection allowing unprecedented speed and convenience when connecting, disconnecting and re-connecting this panel to the network, all without the need for specialist installation engineers. In our opinion this is by far the most advanced fibre optic patch panel available today. Front view

Benefits • Extremely compact
• Eliminates individual fibre handling and fusion splicing
• Fully pre-tested
FibreFab - Optronics and JT Case Study Linking the equipment directly to the ODF was accomplished with a bespoke 24 fibre pre-terminated LC to MPO Flat Micro Cable fan-out assembly. The fan-out tails were designed to match the port to port stagger on the Cisco Nexus switches, to ensure that tails routed to the 400 fibre port positions per chassis, with no excess cable slack. Exact cable length runs minimised cabinet and cable tray congestion. This was achieved within the optical loss targets through the use of low loss terminations throughout.

Benefits • Factory made for rapid installation and guaranteed low loss • Compact 4.2mm x 7.6mm profile • Tails match port stagger
The ease of installing the pre-tested UltraSlim panels and cables was such that no specialist third party installers were needed, with the JT team undertaking the task with in-house resources. Conclusion FibreFab’s and JT’s partnership enabled a solution that is not only scalable but also efficient. FibreFab’s solution enabled JT to deliver its next generation broadband network within the time and budget role-out plans.
Solution Benefits • High fibre count cabling and patching solution - up to 8,000 fibres per central office. • Integration with legacy rack environment. Restricted access and limited space. • Rapid installation of 1,200 fibres terminated in a 48 hour period using non-specialist installation teams.
