Tubular Micro Filtration (TMF)
What is TMF •
Microfiltration (MF) is a low pressure (0.7 – 7 bar, 10-100 psig) separation process for separation of solids from aqueous solutions by means of a membrane.
•
This “crossflow” process is carried out by having a process solution flow along a membrane surface under pressure.
•
Retained particulate matter leaves with the flowing process stream and does not accumulate on the membrane surface

Tubular Micro Filtration (TMF) What Do Microfilters Filter?
Solutions Through Material ScienceSM
Tubular Micro Filtration (TMF) Microfiltration System/Processes •
The Porex TMF Membrane modules contain 20 year old applications combined with cutting edge innovation and materials
•
The strongest, most durable and chemically cleanable membrane product available today
•
All PVDF construction can replace many ceramic membrane products
•
Extremely Chemical and abrasion resistant
•
Tight membrane pore size control provides outstanding filtrate quality, SDI (typically less than 1.0 NTU)
•
Large diameter allows very high solids loading without pretreatment restraints
•
More forgiving than hollow fiber

Tubular Micro Filtration (TMF) Materials of Construction
Membrane with nominal pore size of 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, (0.01 soon)
PVDF membrane material
HDPE or PVDF substrate material
Tubular configuration with 1” or 1/2” diameter
Housing materials of PVC, CPVC, SS, all PVDF, other options on request.
Up to 60 C Temperature PE, up to 100 C Temperature PVDF tubes
Solutions Through Material ScienceSM
Membrane/Substrate • Unique abrasion resistant topography • PVDF membrane with PE or PVDF sintered substrate • Membrane is in the pores of the substrate • Anchored into substrate by full depth entanglement • Also chemically bonded in the all PVDF option

Backwash
•
Backpluse • Often PLC controlled • Typically engaged every 5 – 30 minutes (20 is standard). • Used to prevent excessive solids accumulation on membrane surface • Filtrate is forced back through membranes using air pressure • Air must not be allowed to reach membranes

TMF LABORATORY PILOT UNIT
Solutions Through Material ScienceSM
Laboratory Testing • Pilot Testing (laboratory) – Conducted in 2 tube pilot unit using chemistry determined in screening test – Determination of filtration flow for sizing of the system – Confirmation of effluent quality – Determine if foulants can be cleaned from membrane – 100-500 gallons of sample required – Testing duration is 2-5 days • Sample is recirculated through system – Most systems can be designed based on this test.
Solutions Through Material ScienceSM
Field Pilot Testing • Pilot Testing – Conducted at customers site – Testing is conducted using chemistry determined in lab tests – Various size pilot units can be used – all scale up well – Confirmation of effluent quality and flux rates – Advantages • Several run and clean cycles • Variation in wastewater characteristics – Testing duration is 2-8 weeks or longer if necessary
