The Fire Station Project offers supported tenancies to 40 young people aged between 16 and 25 in the Maryhill, Westercommon and Cowcaddens areas. Fire Station offers housing support to young people who are not yet ready to live independently and require support to manage their tenancy. This service is provided and managed by Queens Cross Housing Association. Fire Station offers 24 hours support, 7 days a week. Who is the service for? The project aims to support young people who are at risk from homelessness or young people who are leaving care. The support the young person receives will be designed to meet their specific needs and goals. This will be outlined within a support plan that will be reviewed on a regular basis. What is housing support? The type of support Fire Station provides includes: -Support with benefits and budgeting -Support to access other support services e.g. health, social work, advocacy -Emotional wellbeing support -Provision of life skills training e.g. cooking, budgeting, tenancy sustainment - Support with personal development e.g. accessing training and education What are the aims of Fire Station? How are referrals made to Fire Station? The housing support service will aim to support persons previously designated as homeless/vulnerable to homelessness, to sustain their own tenancy and realise their potential living within their local community. Referrals are made through Glasgow City Council Social Work department. Referrals to Fire Station are received through the Resource Prioratisation Group (RPG). -We aim to provide a safe, secure and well maintained living environment which encourages stability -We aim to support young people to develop skills and responsibilities which enable them to recognise and accept responsibility for their actions and their associated consequences, which may assist them to reside and retain a tenancy within the local community and also contribute to that community. -We aim to provide advice, counseling and support which enable the individual to create or pursue opportunities which reflect their personal goals. -We aim to support the young person to access and use resources which are beneficial to them. These resources include benefits, education, training or employment as appropriate. -We aim to support the individual to move to a situation whereby they live independently within mainstream housing with no housing support input. Once Fire Station has received the referral from the RPG it will contact the referrer to arrange an ‘informal visit’ where the young person will find out more information about the project. Following this the young person will meet with Housing Support staff to discuss their needs highlighting in which areas they would need support. What else does Fire Station offer? -Promotion of healthy well-being through regular groups including Bike Club, running group, fitness classes and outward bound trips. -Our own award winning environmental group – Pot of Soup, which has set up a sustainable vegetable garden. -Regular confidence and self-esteem building activities e.g. day trips, job club, employability course, breakfast club, community café, cinema, and arts and crafts. -Service user involvement at the heart of the service with regular tenant forums, evaluations and tenant involvement in the staff recruitment process. -Access to in house services including financial inclusion team, volunteering, employability and community development team.
