Info-Flo Kansas Small Flows Association Message from the President The year is near it's end and our annual conference is soon approaching. The 2014 conference will be held at the Prairie Band Casino & Conference Center near Topeka. February 57th. If any conference attendee does not want to stay at the casino for any reason, let us know and we can assist with other hotel arrangements. My term as President is about to end and it will be on Jessi's shoulders to carry on. I wish her the best of luck. I did not get as much accomplished this year as I would have liked. I could have worked harder but then remembered that there were some good things that did happen. First, we have a new Executive Director, Charlene Weiss. Many of you probably know Charlene with her years as a regulator in Johnson and Miami Counties, as well as her years as a KSFA board member. With over 20 years of experience in the onsite industry, I personally feel this was a giant step in the right direction. Second, we made some pretty good progress in being the educational “go-to” organization in the State. More counties are using KSFA to conduct their contractor education. Since the State is doing less and less of this I think this is the best way to get our foot in the door for state-wide recognition. We desperately need more members whether it be Contractors, Regulators or Manufactures. Personally I would love to see us become Contractor strong so the people in the field solving the problems are more involved. Also with more members we will get more exhibitors at the conference and these are the people that make the conference possible. Our members and our exhibitors are the life blood of our association. So as your retiring President, I am asking all the Association members to try and get another professional involved in our organization; try and get the local sanitarian to become a member, all though that is getting harder and harder with all the State and local cuts. I feel our organization is the leading place in the State to get good education and see new products and technologies that are available to our industry. I would like more people to see what we have to offer. See you all at the conference! Ron Vincent . The Kansas Small Flows Board would like to wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR! Info-Flo December 2013 Info-Flo December 2013 PREPARATION & PLANNING FOR ONSITE WASTEWATER SYSTEM INSTALLATIONS How much time do regulators and onsite wastewater system installers (Installers) spend on preparation and planning prior to the installation on an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS)? In almost all jurisdictions, we could probably say – NOT ENOUGH. We all want the same thing don’t we? - An OWTS that will function properly and do so for a long time. I know that this is what homeowner’s desire (along with a cheap price tag of course!). So what can Installers and regulators do in the areas of preparation and planning to achieve this common goal? The first step is to have the soil analyzed. Not just any soil on the building site, but the specific area where the system is proposed to be installed. To locate that specific area may take some time. Soils should be examined in several locations on the site to try to locate the best soil conditions available for the OWTS. When that “best” area is determined, there needs to be some means of locating this same area when the system is being installed. The soil analyzer should make a sketch of the site indicating where soil pits were dug and indicating that “best” area. Maybe that area should also be roped off or protected in some fashion, particularly if construction will take place in the near future. Before an OWTS is permitted for installation, jurisdictions should require a plan from an Installer/Designer showing the location of the proposed OWTS and specifications regarding the system such as size, construction materials (gravel & pipe or chambers), depth of trenches, etc. Any alternative OWTS should be “designed” or “engineered” and have more detailed information regarding the system specifications. The plans and/or designs then need to be carefully reviewed. All parties need to be on the same page for the type, size and location of the proposed OWTS. As Installers, do you make your own sketch of the “best” area or get a copy of the profiler’s sketch; shoot elevations to lay the system out prior to drawing a plan; rope off the area to protect it; communicate with the builder and/or plumber for the best location for the sewer line to exit the foundation; etc., etc.? As regulators, do you thoroughly review the soil profile analysis results; review the plans and/or designs; review house plans to assure that the OSTW is sized properly for the number of bedrooms proposed; work with the Installer/Builder/Homeowner to assure that the OWTS is installed in that “best” area; etc., etc.? All parties working together, and including the builders and homeowners in the preparation and planning process can achieve what should be our common goal – To install an OWTS that will function properly for a long time. NOWRA UPDATES   If you are a KSFA member, you are a member of the National Association. The Installer Academy is now bringing NOWRA qualified instructors to state affiliates such as KSFA. The course catalog can be viewed at: www.installeracademy.org.  NOWRA’s website has an expanded library of resources organized by topic and professional specialty.  The official member magazine, Onsite Journal, was rolled out once again in September after being suspended for several years.  NOWRA continues to keep partnerships with EPA and like-minded national associations. This can expand the market for decentralized systems and increase our industry’s share of federal funding. Info-Flo December 2013 INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES This is one Contractor’s method for connecting chamber units. Wray Construction has tried many ways to connect chamber units and has found that this works best for them. What best construction or design methods have you developed over the years? Would you be willing to share your ideas and/or successes? If so, the Kansas Small Flows Association would like to have this type of article in future issues of our newsletters. Just send pictures, written comments, etc. to us at: [email protected].
