3.5 for Hyper-V 4. Console Local Console ActiveImage Protector is operated using this console. When recovery media is launched, this console is started.
Network Console (for Hyper-V Enterprise only) Allows to connect to ActiveImage agent on remote computers over network. Custom installation enables you to switch from local console to network console.
3.5 for Hyper-V 5. Backup 5-1 Backup Technology Imaging Backup ActiveImage is a sector-based disk imaging backup solution. Backup source may be “Entire Disk” or “Partition”. Backup of a file / folder is not supported.
Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow copy Service)-Savvy Snapshot Support for hot imaging backup utilizing Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) . Allows to back up live system without shutting Windows down.
Smart Sector Backup Enables fast backup of only used sectors which uses less disk space.
Incremental Backup using an in-house developed filter driver Fast incremental backup includes only sectors that have changed from the last backup, saving both processing time and storage space.
7
3.5 for Hyper-V 5. Backup 5-2 Backup Type One-time Backup, Quick Backup Immediate backup can be performed one-time. Not need to set up backup schedule.
Scheduled Backup ActiveImage’s powerful scheduler enables to regularly back up your system according to the schedule you specify. Incremental backups may be scheduled on weekly / monthly basis, without shutting down Windows system.
Cold Backup Support for cold-imaging backup of the system environment, booting up from ActiveImage’s product media or recovery media, while OS is shut down.

3.5 for Hyper-V 5. Backup 5-6 Retention Policy Enabling Retention Policy A limited number of backup image "Generation sets" (a single baseline (full) backup and the incremental backup images) are saved. When another backup image is created, the oldest backup image set is deleted according to the retention policy.
12
3.5 for Hyper-V 5. Backup 5-7 Off-site Replication Up to three destinations for replication sites Distributed storages may be specified for created backup image files. Online storage works with FTP directory / WebDAV The use of WebDAV enables replication to cloud environment.

3.5 for Hyper-V 6. Deduplication Compression 6-1 Deduplication Compression Feature Inline Deduplication Efficiently eliminates duplicate data blocks during the backup process.
The backup image is compressed. Backup image file is compressed during deduplication process.
Compressed 20%~30% smaller than typical high-compression
15
3.5 for Hyper-V 6. Deduplication Compression 6-2 How Deduplication Compression feature works 1. Creates index for every block of backup stream
2. Deletes duplicated blocks
3. Compresses

3.5 for Hyper-V 6. Deduplication Compression 6-3 Deduplication Compression Option Setting Enable Deduplication Compression Option In [Image Option] dialog, select [Deduplication Compression] option.
Setting Deduplication Level Select Deduplication Level and specify the location of temporary work folder . Deduplication Level defines the block size. Level 1 = 2K Level 2 = 4K (Default) Level 3 = 8K

3.5 for Hyper-V 7. Restore Backup Image 7-1 Restore Virtual Machine Seamless Hot Restore (SHR: Boot up and restore live VM from an image) The use of SHR feature enables you to quickly start a VM from an image backup while simultaneously restoring the same VM in background with minimal or nearzero wait time. Restore using ReZoom function (Restore and then boot up a VM) ReZoom technology lets you restore virtual machines selected from a backup image. The VM may be booted up only after restore process completes, however, multiple VM’s may be selected to collectively restore at a time.

3.5 for Hyper-V 7. Restore Backup Image 7-3 Restore Hyper-V host (for Hyper-V Enterprise only) Restore Entire Disk Source partition may be restored to resized target partition, but automatically enlarged. You cannot specify the restore size.
Restore Volume Source partition may be restored to resized target partition. You can specify the restore size in MB.
* Source volume cannot be restored in reduced size. 22
3.5 for Hyper-V 7. Restore Backup Image 7-4 Disaster Recovery (for Hyper-V Enterprise only) Boot into Windows PE based Recovery Environment to restore the entire system Boot into recovery environment from product-media or recovery media to restore the system. 3 WindowsPE based Recovery Environments ① WindowsPE 3.1 (32 bit Windows 7 based PE) ② WindowsPE 3.1 x64 (64 bit Windows 7 based PE) ③ WindowsPE 2005 (Windows XP based PE) ActiveImage console same as on Windows ActiveImage console is operable in the same manner as on Windows. Additional driver installation in recovery environment After booted into recovery environment, you can install a new driver.
23
3.5 for Hyper-V 7. Restore Backup Image 7-5 Mount Image and Restore Step ①: Mount Image Mount backup image file in “aiv” format using ActiveImage.
Step ②: [Disk Management] – [Connect VHD] Connect VHD file in the mounted drive.
Step ③:Copy File Copy the file from the connected drive to a folder in Explorer.
24
3.5 for Hyper-V 8. Tool 8-1 Image Management Consolidation Multiple incremental backup files or baseline image with associated incremental backup files may be consolidated into a single backup file. Incremental backup associated with the consolidated file may be continued to perform. Unification A full (baseline) image file and all associated incremental files may be unified into one file under a unique file name in order to simplify management of backup files. Incremental backup cannot be continued in association with the unified file.
25
3.5 for Hyper-V 8. Tool 8-2 Create Recovery Disk (for Hyper-V Enterprise only) Create a custom recovery disk for disaster recovery A custom recovery disk may be created to include drivers, so that devices can be identified without installing adequate driver after booting into WindowsPE (recovery environment).
26
3.5 for Hyper-V 9. E-Mail Notification Send E-Mail Notification to preset addresses E-Mail notifications keeps users informed about the success or failure of backup tasks. Support for SSL / TLS As SSL / TLS is supported, cloud-based E-Mail service can be supported.
27
3.5 for Hyper-V 10. Support for Command Line (for Hyper-V Enterprise only) Command Line Tool (AipControl.exe) The use of AipControl.exe enables to back up without using AIP console. Instead of ActiveImage’s scheduler, the use of AipControl.exe allows to execute backup task from other application.
28
3.5 for Hyper-V 11. F.A.Q. Q1: How long does backup process take if backup image files are stored in network storage? A1 : To get a rough idea, gigabit network should provide us with data transfer speed of 60MB/sec. Backup of 200GB data is estimated to take about 50 minutes. Q2 : How high is the image file compression ratio? A2 : 60%~70% compressed with [Fast], 50%~60% with [High] (compared with original size) to create backup image files. Q3:If the computer is powered off when backup task is scheduled, what will happen with the scheduled task? A3:The schedule will be skipped to run the task at the next schedule. Q4:How do you calculate required space in the destination storage to save image files? A4: Required space is estimated at the minimum as follows: “Space required for one generation set” x (the number of generation sets to keep + 1)

3.5 for Hyper-V 14. Demonstration Practice ① Install ActiveImage The use of ActiveImage Installer guides you through installation procedures. Practice ② Create backup images Create backup image files using Deduplication Compression and Common Compression to compare compression results. Practice ③ Use Mount Image feature to extract files within the image Mount a created image and select [Disk Management] to connect VHD file in the mounted drive. Practice ④ Use ReZoom to restore VM to a different Hyper-V host Use ReZoom technology to restore VM in the backup image created with Practice ②to a different Hyper-V host and ensure that the restored VM correctly behaves.
