EKG GLOSSARY AORTA- A large artery connected to the heart that receives blood from the left ventricle and distributes it to the rest of the body. ARRHYTHMIA- Abnormal or irregular rhythm of the heart. ARTERY- A vessel that carries blood away from the heart. ARTIFACT- An outside disturbance obscures a signal or reduces its clarity or quality. ATRIA- Plural of atrium. See definition below. ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE- A mass of specialized cells in the right atrium that transmits the electrical impulse from the atria to the His bundle. ATRIUM- One of the two upper chambers of the heart, it receives the blood before it goes into the ventricles. AV NODE- See atrioventricular node. BIPOLAR LEAD- A lead that acts by means of two poles. BRADYCARDIA- A slower than normal heart beat. Generally, in adults, considered to be under 60 beats per minute. BUNDLE OF HIS- A group of modified muscle fibers that transmit the heart’s electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles. CORONARY ARTERIES- Arteries that branch off from the aorta and feed oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. DEPOLARIZATION- The electrical excitation of the heart resulting from the flow of ions across the membrane of cardiac cells, which then spreads from cell to cell as a signal for contraction of the muscle tissue. DIASTOLIC- Referring to the resting period or dilation period of the ventricles. In Blood pressure, refers to the amount of pressure within the arteries during this time of rest. ELECTROCARDIOGRAM- (Also ECG or EKG) The signal traced by an electrocardiograph; used in diagnosing heart disease that modifies the electrical activity of the heart. INFARCTION- Death of tissue following cessation of blood supply to that tissue. ISCHEMIA- Local and temporary decrease in the blood supply to an area of tissue. MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION- (Also heart attack) Damage or death of a portion of the heart muscle tissue due to lack of blood supply. MYOCARDIAL ISCHEMIA-The condition of the heart muscle resulting from a decreased supply of blood to the tissue. P WAVE- The portion of the electrocardiogram that measures atrial depolarization. PERIOCARDITIS- Inflammation of the outer sac that surrounds the heart. PERICARDIUM- The double membranous sac enclosing the heart. PULMONARY ARTERY- A major artery that carries unoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs. PULMONARY VEIN- A major vein that carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left ventricle of the heart. PURKINJE FIBERS- The muscle fibers at the end of the specialized conduction system of the heart which are located along the inner ventricular walls. QRS COMPLEX- The signal on the electrocardiogram that represents the ventricular depolarization and atrial repolarization of the heart. REPOLARIZATION- The return of the heart to its electrical resting state due to ion flow across the cardiac cell membrane. R WAVE- The first upward deflection of the QRS complex. SA NODE- See sinoatrial node. SEPTUM- A wall dividing two cavities. In the heart, the wall divides the left atrium and ventricle from the right atrium and ventricle. SINOATRIAL NODE- A mass of specialized cells located in the right atrium of the heart. Normally this is where the electrical impulses in the heart originate. It is often called the heart’s natural pacemaker. ST SEGMENT- The portion of the electrocardiogram between the end of the QRS complex and the beginning of the T wave. Represents the period between the conclusion of ventricular contraction and the beginning of electrical recovery. SYSTOLIC- Referring to the contraction period of the ventricles. In blood pressure, refers to the amount of pressure within the arteries during this time of contraction. TACHCARDIA- A rapid heart beat. Generally, in adults, a rate greater than 100 bpm. T WAVE- The portion of the electrocardiogram that represents repolarization of the ventricles as the cells recharge themselves in preparation for another impulse. UNIPOLAR LEAD- A lead that acts by means of one pole. VEIN- A vessel in the body that carries blood from the body back to the heart. VENA CAVA- The body’s largest vein, it drains blood from the body into the right atrium of the heart. VENTRICLE- One of two of the hearts lower chambers. Consider pumping chambers, the right ventricle pumps blood out to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumps out to the body.
