FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS DCF 77 and HBG ? These 2 signals are time signals. DCF77’ antenna is located in Germany, in Mainflingen (near Frankfurt). HBG’s antenna is located in Prangins (Swiss). The two signals cover Europe, since they have each a rayon of 1500 km around their antennas These clocks are very accurate : their theoretical deviation is ±1 second for 1 million years Your METEOTRONIC’s Weather Station receives this signal and converts it to show the precise time in summer or wintertime. The quality of the reception depends greatly on the geographic location. In normal cases, there should be no reception problems within a 1500km radius around antennas. Users may be located in areas where atmospheric disturbances are the immediate cause for not receiving the DCF-77 frequency signal. During nighttime, atmospheric disturbances are usually less severe and reception is possible in most cases. With a single daily reception, it is adequate for the Weather Station to keep time accuracy deviation to below 0.5 seconds in a period of 24 hours. When reception is successful, the DCF-77 transmission tower icon will start flashing on the LCD as a sign that the signal has been located and is about to be received. Once the signal has been locked, the DCF-77 tower icon will stay fixed on the LCD and the received time and date will then be displayed.
… Weather forecasts are transmitted together with time, at daily updating (generally at night, when interferences are weaker and fewer). How to start my weather station ? Starting your weather station is very simple : just insert batteries. Time signal is then immediately (and automatically) searched and marked by a flashing icon. Inside “Weather forecasts” section of the LCD, weather icons will come and go into a random rate and are not real weather forecasts. You then have to enter the setting mode and set your weather area (consult the list delivered with the weather station). How can I check that weather forecast are correctly received ? A reception icon under the alarm time confirm the quality of the reception. A fixed icon indicates a complete reception of weather forecasts. A flashing icon indicates a perfect reception of weather forecasts.
In case of a flashing icon, you must generally wait until the following day (transmission occurs at night) to reach a perfect reception. How to get weather forecast of my area ? After starting your weather station, you will have to set your region code depending on the list delivered with your weather station. Once this region code choosen, do not activate any keys of the setting panel. Perfect reception of weather data can take more than 24 hours. Be carrefull ! Depending on your region code forecast, the LCD will display 2 days or for 4 days : - For region code 0 to 59 : weather forecast for 4 days - For region code 60 to 89 : weather forecast for 2 days, with Maxi temperature only It is therefore normal, if you have a 4 days forecast METEOTRONIC ‘s weather station, and if you choose a code between 60 and 89, to display only the 2 first days (apart from “wind and rain” if you have a WM 5100 or WM 5107 weather station), and for the 2 last days, to have only weather icons that will come and go at a random rate. That’s why La Crosse Technology developed METEOTRONIC’s range into “2 days” versions (WM 5400 et WM 5414) and into “4 days” versions (WM 5000, WM 5014, WM 5100 et WM 5107) for a clear reading of data. What should I do if I move in an other city or another country ? You just have to set the region code of your new location (consult the list included in your manual). How are established weather forecast ? Weather forecasts are calculated and established by a Swiss professional team of meteorologists and climatologists. How to set the time zone ? Time zone is by default set on GMT+1 (factory setting). Another setting is not required for almost all of Europe. You will find hereunder a detailed card for time zone setting :
TIME ZONE = 0
CET (UTC+1) – TIME ZONE = +1
EET (UTC+2) – TIME ZONE = +2
MSK (UTC+3) – TIME ZONE = +3
What do I do if my display is blank? Check the polarity of the batteries to make sure they are installed according to the diagram in the battery compartment. Also make sure that you are using a new good quality alkaline battery. We do not recommend rechargeable batteries.

What is the maximum distance I can have the remote sensor from the display? The maximum open-air distance is 100 meters in a straight line although you should take into account the environment, distance and interferences. Subtract 6 to 10 meters for an exterior wall or any other similar obstruction, in width or composition. Subtract 3 to 10 meters per interior wall or any obstruction that is similar in width or composition. (An obstruction would include anything that is between the line of sight like a roof, walls, floors, ceilings, trees, etc.) Also keep your units away from electronic appliances like TV’s, microwaves, computers, refrigerators and speakers. Does the remote transmitter have any trouble transmitting through specific materials? Yes and No. We have trouble maintaining a signal through metal siding, stucco walls, and UV glass. You can get the remote sensor to transmit through these materials, but it will take a little bit of trial and error. Reset the weather station as mentioned above and change the angle that the remote transmits through the siding or glass until an outdoor temperature remains on the display for an extended period of time. Keep in mind that the signal from the remote must travel through some space (10 centimetres of air minimum) before reaching wall, metal wall or glass window. Where can I mount the remote sensor? In order to get an accurate reading and to prolong the life of your sensor we recommend that you have it in a sheltered area out of the sun and direct rain. Fog and mist will not affect the sensor, but a soaking in water may. You can mount it outside under an eve of your house or any other suitable place that will keep it out of the sun and rain. Do not wrap the sensor in plastic or seal it in a plastic bag.
Can I add one or several outdoor transmitters ? No. Weather stations from METEOTRONIC’s range can only manage one outdoor transmitter. Why does my outdoor transmitter indicate a higher or lower temperature than min. or max. temperatures announced for the current day ? Mini and Maxi temperatures for the current day are general values, and are a part of current weather forecast. The outdoor transmitter measure temperature (and humidity) locally and can also be influenced by the nearby environment (building structure, direct exposure to sunlight…). After replacing the batteries of my weather station, the outdoor transmitter is not displayed on the LCD. Why ? If batteries where only changed in the weather station, the outdoor transmitter will not be recognized anymore by the weather station. A security code is attributed to the transmitter by the weather station during the set up. If this procedure is not respected, the LCD will display “--” instead of outdoor local data.
