FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS regarding Bay Area Credit Union’s chip-enabled Visa Credit Card What is a chip card and why am I getting one? Chip cards are payment cards that have an embedded chip. Even though your existing Bay Area Visa credit card may not be expired, we are issuing new Bay Area chip cards to provide advanced security when you use your chip card in a store or at an ATM. How do I know if I have a chip card? If you have a chip card, the chip is located on the front of the card. You will still have a magnetic stripe on the back so that you can use it at merchants who don’t accept chip cards yet. Why are chip card transactions more secure? Every time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used and your chip card is more difficult to counterfeit or copy. Can I still use my chip card at a non-chip-enabled ATM or merchant terminal? Yes. If a merchant is not yet chip enabled, you can still swipe your card. What should I do with my old Bay Area Visa Credit Card? Once you activate your new card, please destroy your existing card for security reasons. Will my current credit card information change? If you are the primary cardholder, your card number will remain the same. For security reasons, each additional user on an account will receive a new card with a unique card number. Your new card will have a new three-digit security code on the back and a new expiration date. Reminder: Please update any merchants or online accounts with recurring payments or saved card details with your new card information. Do I need to enter a PIN to pay with a chip-enabled card? No. You will not need to enter a PIN when paying with your Bay Area Visa credit card, but you may be prompted to sign for your purchase. How do I pay at a chip-enabled terminal? It’s easy to make purchases with your chip-enabled credit card. Simply insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the terminal and follow the prompts on the screen. Sign for your purchase and remove your card when prompted. And, don’t forget to take your receipt. Where can I use my chip-enabled card? Whether you pay for your purchases using chip technology or swipe your card as before, your chip enabled Visa card can be used wherever Visa is accepted. Will I have to pay any fees to use a chip-enabled card? No. There are no additional fees to use a chip-enabled card?
