Executive Summary The summaries and the supporting details for FY 2011 externally sponsored grants and contracts are reported by the Office of Research and Projects. New Awards Overall: In FY2011 SIUE received 226 new awards totaling $34,255,189. In comparison to FY2010 with 270 awards totaling $41,268,240 this represents a decrease. The decrease is due in part to the influx of stimulus funds in FY2010 and reductions of federal funding agencies’ budgets. However, a number of individual units posted impressive increases. Gains in funding were posted by the Schools of Pharmacy (25%), Nursing (12%), Business (20%), and the College of Arts and Sciences (11%). Instruction: Awards supporting instruction increased by 18.48% over FY 2010 (from $1,861,972 to $2,206,037). Support for Instruction increased 729% since FY2007 due to a large IT infrastructure award received FY2010-11. Research: SIUE faculty and staff received 115 new awards for $5,875,177 to support research projects. While the awarded dollars for research decreased compared to FY 2010, SIUE faculty successfully competed nationally for highly competitive and prestigious research programs, receiving awards from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additionally, the faculty also received research support from state and local agencies, such as the Illinois EPA and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. These grants funded a broad array of research areas, ranging from the study of chronic pain and cognitive aging treatments to the study of children’s disease development and the study of endangered languages in Nepal. Public Service: SIUE had a modest decreased in public service awards of 7.51% compared to FY 2010. However, University Services to East St. Louis did not see a significant decrease as a result of continuing awards that are due to expire this year; pending funds represent an important indicator of future trends in this area. Student Financial Aid: SIUE received $9,651,657 in student financial aid in FY 2011, a decrease of 21.92%. New Proposals Faculty and staff submitted 377 new proposals in FY 2011. This represents a significant increase of 46.69% since FY 2007, with a modest decrease of 8.05% since FY 2010. Pending funds as of June 30, 2010 are $41,045,231. This is a sizable increase of 15.18% over FY 2010 and 57.48% over FY 2007. Pending funds represent an important indicator of possible future awards. The significant increase in pending funds bodes well for potential grant and contract awards in the upcoming fiscal year. Faculty Participation Grants supported SIUE’s Long-Term Goal of a Committed Faculty and Staff through significant faculty involvement. Out of the total number of tenure and tenure-track faculty, 38.7% submitted proposals (178 out of 460) and 46% of those who submitted grants received awards (82 faculty members as either PI or Co-PI on the awards) in FY 2011. Overall, 18% of faculty and staff received awards in FY 2011. Active Community Involvement Faculty and staff received 88 awards for $15.9 million for public service activities. Projects included foreign language development programs, foster care training, reforming
early education intervention services and response, summer arts enrichment, and small business development. Additionally, many of the public service projects addressed the needs of the underserved populations of Metro East St. Louis. The SIUE East St. Louis Center, for example, managed $14,376,022 in grants supporting activities for children and families ranging from Head Start to Upward Bound. Engaged Students and Innovative Programs Funded projects supported internships and assistantships for students, summer programs for science teachers, and new curricular developments for the humanities and social sciences. Grants and contracts helped SIUE address a number of its principle objectives. SIUE faculty and staff propose more grants and receive more awards than do their colleagues at comparable institutions. With continued development and support through our internal grant programs, workshops, new services provided through COS, and other support programs, we expect that grant activity will continue as one of SIUE’s institutional strengths. Continued support and encouragement from department chairs, deans, and central administration is necessary to sustain the involvement of the faculty and staff in sponsored programs.
