Getting Started
Step 1: Charge your headband
Before using NeuroPlus, make sure your Muse headband is fully charged. Plug one end of the included USB charging cable into the Muse headband. Plug the other end into your computer’s USB port. It takes about 2.5 hours to charge the headband’s battery completely. To check the battery level while charging, press the circular power button on the device. Always unplug the charger from your Muse before using.
Step 2: Download the NeuroPlus apps
There are two NeuroPlus training games available. If you’re using an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, you can find NeuroPlus: Axon and NeuroPlus: Conduit in the Apple App Store. If you’re using an Android device, you can find NeuroPlus: Axon in the Google Play Store. Due to the file size, the app may only download over a Wifi network.
Step 3: Wearing the Muse
The Muse headband is adjustable and designed to fit nearly every wearer. Just like a pair of glasses, Muse sits around the back of both ears, with the band extending across the middle of the forehead. Before wearing Muse, disconnect it from the USB charger and make sure your skin is clean and the headband is wiped clean where the sensors make contact with your skin. Make-up and the buildup of natural oils can form a barrier that blocks the electrical signals from reaching the sensors. Once the headset is in place, gently extend or retract each arm of the device to tighten or loosen the headband as needed to ensure firm contact against your forehead and the back of your ears. Make sure there is no hair between the sensor band and your forehead, and no gaps between the sensor band and your skin. To turn the headset on, hold the power button down for 1 second. If you have difficulty keeping the headset in place (common for smaller children), you can wear a sports headband over the device to keep it firmly against your skin.
Step 4: Pairing the Muse Go to your device’s settings and make sure Bluetooth is turned ON. If your Muse headband has the “muse” logo printed in BLUE, the headband will automatically pair with your mobile device when you open the NeuroPlus app. No further action is required, and you can begin using the app immediately. If your Muse headband has the “muse” logo printed in WHITE or BLACK, you’ll need to put the headband in pairing mode first by holding the power button down for 6 seconds until the lights are blinking on and off in unison. Then, go to your Bluetooth settings and select “MuseXXXX” to pair.
Step 5: Begin training!
After unplugging the headband from the charger, turn it on by holding down the power button for 1 second. Next, open the Axon or Conduit app log in to the game. IMPORTANT: If you signed up as a Parent or Clinician, you must first create a Player in your dashboard at https://my.neuro.plus with their own unique username, email, and password. A setup screen will show you if the headband is contacting your skin properly. If the screen says “Adjust headset to improve contact quality,” repeat the procedures in Step 3 to ensure the headset is properly positioned and fitted. Contact us if you’re unable to get “Excellent contact quality.” Note that while we’d like all sensors to be blue, it’s perfectly fine to train with some sensors still showing white or orange. When you begin playing, if you feel that you’re being unfairly punished for moving when you’re perfectly still, or that it’s too difficult to sit completely still, go to Options > “Adjust stillness difficulty” to change this setting. Variability in the headset accelerometers causes the default setting to be quite difficult for some users.
Reminder & Tips
•
Try both games to add variety to your training!
•
Train 20-30 minutes per day, 3 days per week for optimal results.
•
If the setup screen says “No device detected,” and headset is on and charged, first try quitting and relaunching the app. If that doesn’t help, next try turning Bluetooth on and off, or unpairing the device in your Bluetooth settings and repeating the pairing process from Step 4. Contact us if issues remain.
•
If the software says “Adjust headset to improve contact quality,” repeat the procedures in Step 3 to ensure the headset is properly positioned and fitted. Contact us if you’re unable to get “Excellent contact quality.” Note that while we’d like all sensors to be blue, it’s perfectly fine to train with some sensors still showing white or orange.
•
If the headset loses contact during training, or you have difficulty keeping it against the skin, try wearing a sports headband over the device to keep it tight and in place.
•
If you feel that you’re being unfairly punished for moving when you’re perfectly still, go to Main Menu > Options > “Adjust stillness difficulty” to change this setting. Variability in the headset accelerometers causes the default setting to be too difficult for some users.
