Blue Discus Application Note APN1001 Getting Started with Blue Discus Getting Started with Blue Discus by Piasim Corporation Pte Ltd This documentation provides a guide on powering up the Blue Discus and making a connection to a Bluetooth-enabled Android Device. Piasim Corporation Pte Ltd 2. Create Pairing Blue Discus communicates with Android devices via Bluetooth. Go to your device's Bluetooth settings (normally found in the Settings page), search for Blue Discus you want to pair. The bluetooth device name of Blue Discus would be 'BD'. 1. Powering up Blue Discus The Blue Discus requires a power supply between 3.3Vdc and 12Vdc. Short jumper J8 to enable Power led, short jumper J7 to enable RF Led. Connect positive supply voltage to +RAW and power ground of supply to GND. refer to diagram as shown: POWER - SUPPLY + Illustration 2: Pairing with pin code Should you be prompted for a password, key in 0000. 3. Connecting with Blue Discus App Illustration 1: Blue Discus Power Connection Short VDD and DREF of J5 with a jumper. This is to ensure proper operation of digital input pins. Upon powering the Blue Discus, POWER LED should lit up in red, the RF Led will be blinking, indicating that there is currently no Bluetooth connection with any Android device. Download the free Blue Discus App from Google Play Store. Launch the app and you should see a help screen since this is the first time you are launching the app. (Help screen can be access from the app's menu). Return to the main screen by pressing BACK. A layout named 'Demo Control' should be available to you. The top screen shows the name of the 1 Version 1.1 Blue Discus Application Note APN1001 Getting Started with Blue Discus device to be connected when app is launched. “NO DEFAULT DEVICE” means there is none specified. Click on the screen to access the list of paired devices you can select. Select by checking the device you wish to connect to when app is launched. Wait for the message to show “CONNECTED TO ”. This means that the device now can communicate with Blue Discus. The RF LED on the Blue Discus should light up, indicating a connection. Activate a layout by sliding the arrow of “Demo Control” from left to right. Creating Customized Layouts Blue Discus App features a customizable layout that lets you arrange the controls you wish to control or monitor. Creating a new layout by selecting the 'Add Layout' option from the main screen menu. The default name for any new layouts is “My Control”. Activate this control by sliding the arrow from left to right. You should see an empty page. Piasim Corporation Pte Ltd blocks in a row. Rows are arranged in the order you create them. Here you can change the control name and add layouts. Controls are arrange in a list. Each row in a list has 4 blocks to house controls. Controls (E.g. Analog Control) can occupy a minimum of one block to maximum of 4 3 Version 1.1 Illustration 9: Adding controls in a row Blue Discus Application Note APN1001 Getting Started with Blue Discus “Control Type” lets you choose the control , e.g. Analog, digital input. “Display Size” lets you choose how many blocks in a row this control occupies. Select “Add Control” to add an analog channel for example. Click on the control to access additional details. In the additional details dialog, you can choose the pin to monitor and customize the Piasim Corporation Pte Ltd label. Click “OK” to close dialog or “Delete” to delete the control. Click back to go back to edit mode, and back once again to running mode. 5. Conclusion This article aims to guide first time users of Blue Discus in pairing and setting up a customized control. Blue Discus communicates with Android devices using Bluetooth. Customized controls allow you to tailor the Blue Discus to your specific application.
