Top job for Toni Wallan Primary School’s Toni Gussenhoven got a taste of the real world when she became Principal for the Day at Wallan Primary School last Thursday. Promoting leadership and understanding the program sees a student spend the day undertaking the tasks current principal Ann Stevens does on a typical day in the big chair. For full details on Toni’s experience, please see page 7.
Study boon for bikes “The complex already plays a major role in our local economy, with motorcycle enthusiasts and fans supporting local businesses on their regular visits to the facility. Expanding this complex would build on this already successful site, as well as creating new jobs in our region and further expanding tourism opportunities. “A steering committee with representatives from council, Motorcycle Victoria and the community has been put in place to oversee the feasibility study. The study is expected to begin in mid to late July.” Just an hours drive from Melbourne on one of the state’s most significant rail and road routes, Broadford is an ideal destination for motor sports and other major events. The broad-based study is expected to provide a vision and master plan for development of the two adjacent sites; investigate and recommend the most suit-

able method for delivering utilities to the two sites; undertake an economic assessment of the future value of the project to the area and the region Motorcycling Victoria has relocated its head office to Broadford and is keen to develop the complex to meet the needs of its members and the broader motor sports fraternity. A number of new events have also committed to the facility for the next three years. “It is very early days yet but we are hopeful the feasibility study could open opportunities for the expansion of activity at the complex and additional services to benefit the community as a whole,” Acting CEO of Motorcycling Victoria, Rob Mestrom said. The state governnment is supporting the project through its $500 million Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.

A POSSIBLE expansion to the State Motorcycle Sports Complex (SMSC) could see Broadford become the next big destination in motor sports and attract larger events and more visitors to the region. Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford announced last week the state government would fund $50,000 towards the development of a feasibility study to expand the existing complex and boost the local economy. Mitchell Shire Council and Motorcycling Victoria will assess the potential expansion of the SMSC and the development of adjacent vacant land into an industrial park and training facility with accommodation. “The potential expansion of the State Motorcycle Sports Complex would have significant benefits for both Broadford, and Mitchell Shire as a whole, Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said.
“The State Motorcycle Sports Complex in Broadford already has a renowned reputation, hosting both charitable and competitive events. With this funding we look forward to working on its expansion,” Ms Pulford said. “This comprehensive feasibility study is an important part of the ongoing effort to revitalise Broadford and the surrounding area.” “This is an exciting project that has the potential to create many employment and tourism opportunities for Broadford as well as providing significant improvements to make the State Motorcycle Sports Complex a state of the art facility for motorcycling enthusiasts,” Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes said.

Council hears community concerns WITH the Mitchell Shire Council Budget less than a week away from being completed, concerned local residents put forward submissions at a special hearings committee last Monday, June 5. The key theme among the submissions was safety. Speaking to council on behalf of the Pyalong Kindergarten, Natalie Bisignano advocated for capital works to be completed on the two existing car parks as well as footpath works. With a large number of children attending the kindergarten, Ms Bisignano stated that at peak times there are as many as 28 families and only 10 car park spaces. Submitting her three stage approach Ms Bisignano said the current car park spaces, including unsealed car parks, presented a slip, trip and fall safety hazard. “The capital works are required to increases the overall safety
level in the car park areas for children, educators, parents and carers, as well as provide more order in the area,” Ms Bisignano said. Representing the Kilmore Football Club, Paul Maher raised the question of why the club has been approaching sponsors for funding when the club rooms at the JJ Clancy Reserve are in fact a council asset. The Kilmore Football Club asked council to pave the undercover area underneath the veranda as the area becomes wet and muddy in the winter months and raises safety concerns with people slipping. In his submission, Mr Maher stated that other facilities in the shire have sealed areas in front of their change rooms where spectators congregate. “On behalf of the committee and user groups utilising the JJ Clancy Reserve, I submit that it is only fair and reasonable for
Mitchell Shire to provide a sealed area for the comfort and safety of patrons,” Mr Maher said. Safety was the main concern among the submitters with Leanne Camilleri asking for council to submit additional safety guard rails up the mountain on Spur Road Clonbinane to Mount Disappointment. Since Black Saturday, Ms Camilleri and other Clonbinane residents have continuously asked for the guard rails to be installed. In a passionate submission to council, Ms Camilleri explained how five of her family members have been seriously impacted by the lack of guard rails. “There have been many instances of cars going over the side and serious injuries occurring, luckily to date no fatality,” Ms Camilleri said. “The local community has been petitioning this for years. Even if you could consider the lesser cost of extending the last
guard rail going up to the next bend on the left side.” Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Cr Rhonda Sanderson confirmed council had previously received requests for the installation of guard rails along several sections of Spur Road in Clonbinane and that the project is currently under consideration as part of council’s 2017/18 works program. “Council has a large road network consisting of over 1380km of sealed and unsealed roads. Maintaining such a large road network poses challenges and unfortunately not all road requests can be acted upon immediately,” Ms Sanderson said. “Council thanks those members of the community who made submissions to Council’s Draft 2017/18 Budget and the Road Management Plan. We look forward to considering them and presenting the plan for adoption at the June council meeting.”

HOME grown pest control application Termite Register is set to take the world by storm, thanks to the innovation of Kilmore local, Arron Vilinskis. With over 10 years of experience in the local area as a licensed pest technician, Arron has first-hand knowledge of the damage pests such as termites can wreak on a home. “Up to $2 billion worth of damage impacts home, infrastructure, and assets each year, making termites Australia’s most destructive and expensive natural disaster,” Vilinskis said. General home insurance does not cover the damage caused by termite attack. Their ability to bridge and breach any barrier system means the only weapon homeowners have against this subterranean tsunami is knowledge of the local area along with regular checks by experienced licensed professionals. “The statistics are crazy. Three out of five homes in Australia run a very good chance of suffering termite infestation. If three out of five houses caught fire wouldn’t something more be done? Termites are a hidden danger, they are unknown and the damage they cause is very, very expensive.” Vilinskis admits the idea for the app came about because of the frequency of infestations he found during his work as a licensed pest controller. “I could drive down the main street and know termites had been there, and there, and there. It is probably the biggest danger faced by home and property owners to their most valuable asset, yet only three in every 100 homes gets a regular termite inspection,” he said. The Termite Register app works as an infestation tracking system. It is an independent tool that acts as a warning system for homeowners and activity register for property pur-
Metropolitan & Regional Victoria chasers. It is also a knowledge base for the community which is aimed at understanding and eventually predicting termite activity. Licensed pest controllers who register with the service can lodge information for positive and negative findings in the area. Alerts are sent to your device when active termites are found within a 500m proximity of your alarm. This does not divulge details of the infestation or the notified user beyond their own account. “We aim to raise termite awareness, encourage people to protect what is their biggest asset, and limit the spread of damage from termites in an area. People should know if they are
looking to purchase in an area of risk or if others nearby have found termites” Vilinskis said. Termite Register was introduced in October last year with presentations at conferences in Australia and also at PestWorld in Seattle USA. With secured patents in multiple countries, worldwide interest continues to grow. National television and newspaper coverage also promotes community support for the innovation. “The termite problem does not only relate to homes. Infrastructure in communities such as power poles, and nature strip trees along with community safety are also at risk. Some councils, as non-declared termite areas, do not require pre-construction treatments even though termites are active there,” Vilinskis said. “There is nothing like this on the market. It assists property owners, those purchasing properties, community organisations, and local governments. It allows licensed pest controllers to contribute to and understand the patterns of infestations in certain areas while helping homeowners protect their assets.” The Termite Register app is available for free through the App Store or Google Play.

Breakfast for the kids STUDENTS from Lancefield Primary School were treated to a big breakfast last Wednesday, June 7 when members of the Macedon Ranges Freemasons Lodge cooked up egg and bacon sandwiches. For the past year members from Lodge 97, in conjunction with Lancefield Primary School, has been providing breakfast, comprising egg and bacon sandwiches plus apples bananas and oranges, once a month to all the students of the school. This program started last year after the then principal, Diana Ellis, was invited to discuss assistance the Lodge might be able to provide the school. An area of concern was that some children were attending school without having breakfast. Hoping to make a difference, the Lodge offered to provide a nourishing breakfast one day per month. The menu was then decided after consultation with the principal. To cover the cost of the food and the cooking materials which is about $3000 a year, the Lodge conduct regular fundraising with the support from the Bendigo Bank including monthly sausage sizzles outside the Lancefield and Romsey branches. The Lodge also recognises Lancefield Bakery and Romsey Fruit Market for their continued support “The Lodge members were touched deeply by the response of the students and committed to continuing this project,” Worshipful Master Barry Arlow said. “With the start of this school year, Breakfast for the Kids (and the occasional parent), the project is continuing full steam with the new principal Joanne Emond’s full support.” The Macedon Ranges Freemasons Lodge 97 continues to support students at local schools with scholarships. The Macedon Ranges Freemasons meet on the first Thursday of each month except January, and are located at 73 Main Street, Romsey. They can also be found on Facebook at Macedon Ranges Freemason Lodge 97 or at www.freemasonsvic.net.au. For more information please call Barry on 0437 542 372 or George on 0429 5757 802.
SupportNEWS for local apprentices MACEDON Ranges Shire businesses continue to benefit from the government’s support for apprentices and trainees thanks to an $8.2 million boost in the Victorian Budget. Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney and Member for Macedon MaryAnne Thomas visited JAKs Body Repairs in Romsey recently to meet its two young apprentices and business owners benefiting from the government’s investment in apprenticeships and traineeships. The Victorian Budget 2017/18 provides funds for Apprentice Support Officers, to make sure apprentices under the age of 25 get the support they need to finish their training and get the jobs they want. Twenty-five support officers will be based at TAFEs across Victoria, so they can continue mentoring and helping young apprentices with family, work and

training issues that could affect their apprenticeship. JAKs BodyN Repairs EWS is a family-owned panel shop with over 30 years of experience in the industry. Owners Alex and Krystal Spiteri currently employ two apprentices, both of whom are getting invaluable, on the job experience. Talking to the apprentices and business owners Ms Tierney and Ms Thomas said that apprenticeships provide a valuable learning opportunity for young people. “Trades shouldn’t be playing second fiddle to university – that’s why we’re working to grow apprenticeships and traineeships in Victoria,” Ms Tierney said. “You simply can’t beat the hands on learning opportunities that apprenticeships provide, they’re vital for young people who want to learn a trade,” Ms Thomas added.

“JAKs Body Repair has taken on apprentices to help them get the skills and experience they need and I encourage other local businesses to do the same.” Earlier this month, the state government established a new Apprenticeship and Traineeship Taskforce – chaired by Victorian Skills Commissioner Neil Coulson. The taskforce is looking at the barriers stopping people from taking up apprenticeships and traineeships, and whether issues are specific to particular industries or broader in nature. Since January 1, 2016, at least 10 per cent of work carried out on Victoria’s major projects has been undertaken by apprentices, trainees or engineering cadets under the government’s Major Projects Skills Guarantee.

Queen’s Birthday honours for Bill Melbourne FORMER Mitchell Shire councillor Bill Melbourne has received an Order of Australia Medal for service to local government, and to the community of the Mitchell shire. Mr Melbourne served as mayor on four occasions from 2012 to 2013, 2008 to 2010, 2006 to 2007 and from 2004 to 2005. Mr Melbourne was one of the shire’s longest serving councillors, having served from 2003 until he retired from office at the 2016 elections. He received the Mayor Emeritus Award in 2010. Perhaps Mr Melbourne’s most remarkable
achievement was in seeing the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk through from concept to reality as the instigator of the project and founding project committee member. He has served as president of the Seymour Elderly Citizens’ Hostel, Karingal Seymour Aged Care Services, since 2012 and was vice president from 2010 to 2012 and has been a board member, since 2007. Mr Melbourne is also a board member of Seymour College (since 2010), Seymour Health (2008-2009) and a member of the Seymour 2020 Committee, early 2000s.
Leader for the day WALLAN Primary School Year 6 student Toni Gussenhoven enjoyed learning just what it takes to run a primary school last Thursday when she was Principal for the Day. After winning through the application process over four other students, Toni was selected by a panel to spend a day working alongside Prinicpal Ann Stevens and undertaking many day to day tasks for the school. “It has been great fun. I have done yard duty, handed out golden tickets for correct uniform, helped plan upcoming maintenance work and started writing up the newsletter as it comes out today,” Toni said. “I have learnt a lot, especially how much work has to be done for the school and also a lot about meeting new people and talking to them.” Ms Stevens described Toni as the perfect candidate for the role of Prinicpal for the Day as she loves the school and is always so positive and happy to be there and encourages all other students to feel the same. “Staff and other children have all seemed very happy to see Toni in the role which is great,” Ms Stevens said. “Toni’s application really stood out as her confidence shone through and it also showed she had thought a great deal about what roles she would have to undertake on the day.”

Festival celebrates 21 years THE Kilmore Celtic Festival will celebrate 21 years of great Celtic music and dance on the weekend of June 23-25. The result of a year’s hard work from the dedicated committee will again see Kilmore welcome visitors from across the state to the popular festival that celebrates the Celtic heritage of the area. The festival commences on Friday, June 23 at 6.30pm with a welcome evening at Kilmore Trackside where festival-goers can meet and enjoy good food and be entertained by Eddie Lewis. Saturday starts with the Poets Gathering at 9am in the John Taylor Room where you can read your own poem or a personal favourite. Enter into the competition for the best Celtic Poem for the Syd Cantlon Award or the Judges Award and coffee and croissants will be available there. The Kilmore market will ring to the sounds of the Watsonia RSL Pipes and Drums on Saturday, while the O’Shea-Ryan Irish dancers will make their appearances along the street. Non-stop entertainment will then be in full swing in the Memorial Hall and the John Taylor Room and in the evening the concert will feature three fantastic groups – all world class performers in Claymore, Saoirse and the Old Melbourne Road Band. The climax of the weekend is the very popular Sunday Celtic Banquet which includes the honoured Address to the Haggis and more entertainment to accompany a fine meal. Bookings are essential for the Banquet as table seating is limited. The festival committee would like to thank its amazing volunteers, sponsors and patrons who have supported them over their twenty-one festivals. “We like to think we have now come of age,” president Eddie Lewis said. Tickets are available online at www. kilmorecelticfestival.org.au, on Facebook, at the Kilmore Bookstore or by calling 03 5781 1711
School art show BROADFORD Secondary College celebrated all things art for their annual ‘Art Week’ on Thursday and Friday, May 25-26. Students got involved with a range of art activities during lunchtimes including chalk drawings on the pavement, Koori art, Op Art spinners, yarn bombing, a ‘respect’ mural and a musical performance from its talented singing students. Prizes were won throughout the week with students having the opportunity to answer the daily art question announced each morning. The Art Week colouring competition was very popular this year, with students from almost every year level submitting an entry. Students and staff then turned their interest to the Staff Art Exhibition, stages last week. Each staff member had been given a small canvas and interpreted the very broad theme of ‘learning’ into an artwork. Some excellent work was submitted.

Tuesday, June 13, 2017, NORTH CENTRAL & WHITTLESEA REVIEW / THE FREE PRESS
Feature artist on display COMMUNITY members are invited to the Courthouse Gallery in Kilmore to view the works of current Kilmore Art Society local feature artist Maureen Runge. Maureen commenced oil painting lessons in 1987 with artist Pauline Cross. She undertook the lessons for two years and then moved onto another year of lessons with artist Noella Clohesy at the
Diamond Valley Arts Society. Maureen didn’t enjoy the medium so further instruction followed comprising of two terms of watercolour experience with well-known Australian artist Herman Pekel, as well as two years with Giselle Bolitin Maynard. Maureen is mainly selftaught on wet style which she finds exciting and challenging.
Artist on show: Maureen Runge shows off her artwork which is currently on display at the Kilmore Courthouse. Maureen is pictured with her watercolour titled Floral Display.
Maureen also enjoys painting portraiture using pastels. Her paintings are in collections in Germany, England and the United States. She exhibits locally and is wellknown for her loose and spontaneous artistic style. She loves a challenge and loves to paint figures, flowers, boats, landscapes, seascapes, buildings and native birds. Maureen also taught watercolour to children and adults at the Diamond Valley Arts Society for a number of years, and now teaches watercolour at home. She has run workshops with the Echuca, Plenty Valley Arts, Heathcote, Seymour Art Society, Diamond Valley and Kilmore Art Societies. Over the years she has had solo exhibitions at the Eltham Library, the Ivanhoe Fire Station, Volumns Eltham, Rivers Nursery Yarrambat, Willira Gallery and the Heathcote Winery. Maureen has won many awards including Best Watercolour Diamond Valley Arts Society 1997, Best Watercolour Kalkallo, Best Watercolour Heathcote and more recently the Best Watercolour at the 2017 Kilmore Art Expo. The courthouse is open each Saturday and Sunday, and all are welcome to drop in, have a chat with the society member on duty and view Maureen’s work.

Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor Anzac Appeal thanks “By giving so generously, the community has ensured that we will be able to provide assistance to veterans.” EDITOR: The Romsey-Lancefield RSL subbranch would like to again thank our wonderful Lancefield and Romsey communities for their continued support of the Anzac Appeal week. By giving so generously, the community has ensured that we will be able to provide assistance to veterans, especially during the demanding winter months. We would also like to thank all the individuals and businesses who contributed to the Anzac ceremony with the purchase of an Anzac wreath. This was a new initiative and the sale of 39 wreaths in the first year was most gratifying, providing a valuable contribution to the Anzac Appeal.
Finally, we would like to thank the Lancefield Neighbourhood House for again providing morning tea at the Lancefield Mechanics Hall as its contribution to Anzac Day. The gesture was very much appreciated by all. Patricia Vowles Romsey-Lancefield RSL sub-branch
A point of clarification “Finally, the error has been acknowledged, and the right and honourable remedial decision has been made.” EDITOR: I refer to Mr Brian Mawhinney’s letter in the North Central Review and Whittlesea Review (June 6, 2017) in which he makes several assertions which are worthy of comment and clarification. The first is the assertion that the issue of the proposed interchange at Wandong has not been resolved due to the clause in Minister Donnellan’s media release which states that
Stage 2 of the Kilmore-Wallan bypass, which includes the contentious interchange, “...will not proceed at this time”. The second assertion is that the Minister’s decision and media release “...was designed to placate the locals prior to next year’s election”. With regard to the first issue, it is a basic fact that in a living dynamic world nothing is ‘forever and ever’. Rather, this appealing sentiment is the illusionary magic inherent in popular fairytales. However, the key point missed by Mr Mawhinney in the government’s media release is that the Minister acknowledges that due diligent process in accordance with the purpose and intent of the Environment Effects Act (1978) was not afforded to the community of Wandong/Heathcote Junction through the Environment Effects Statement (EES) investigative and consultative process.

Thus, should Stage 2 of the bypass ever re-emerge in the future, it will necessarily be subjected to thorough EES investigation. Any government deciding to override such an investigation would indeed be foolhardy as it would be intentionally compromising its own governance integrity. In addition, Mr Mawhinney is probably unaware that, in personal letters sent to the residents of Wandong/Heathcote Junction, the Member for Northern Victoria, Ms Jaclyn Symes, reiterated the Minister’s decision and provided further clarifying details. Specifically, Ms Symes stated “The [RMCG] report identifies gaps in community engagement that I hope will inform VicRoads’ approach to similar matters in the future” and “When Stage 2 is required targeted consultation will take place and I anticipate it will open the opportunity for other routes to be examined”. This means that VicRoads generally needs to improve its interactive, investigative and consultative procedures, and that other routes will need to be considered should Stage 2 be required in the future. With regard to the second issue, yes, it is probable that the government’s decision not to proceed with Stage 2 of the bypass contained an element of placating voters in Wandong/Heathcote Junction. After all, those politicians who talk to their constituents, listen to their issues and grievances, and faithfully represent them in governance processes, are the politicians who tend to get re-elected. In fact, vote-based people-empowered governance is the very substance of our democracy! However, the most salient reason for the government’s decision not to proceed with Stage 2 was the irrefutable evidence that the citizens of Wandong/Heathcote Junction were excluded from the due diligent process which was and remains their inherent citizen right in accordance with the purpose and intent of the Environment Effects Act (1978). Once exposed, this error in the carriage of due process had to be dealt with - preferably neutralised and negated. There were many attempts over the past two years to do just that - they failed. Finally, the error has been acknowledged, and the right and honourable remedial decision has been made. The integrity of social and legislative justice prevails. THE North Central Review was contacted last week by a concerned resident who had located a deceased kangaroo, hung and butchered in the Wallan township. Wallan community member, Peter Krake discovered the animal on his morning walk on Saturday, June 3 in the bushes near the Wallan Scout Hall and reported the incident to the police, wildlife team and the Mitchell Shire Council. Alarmingly, the kangaroo had been skinned and due to its locality Mr Krake was concerned that children might stumble across it. “I’m worried some little kids are going to see it,” Mr Krake said. A spokesperson for Mitchell Shire Council confirmed that a crew was sent to remove the kangaroo from the area. “If a person comes across a dead animal, it is best to report it to council in the first instance by calling 5734 6200,” the council spokesperson said. “Council can then organise collection of the animal, if located on public land, or notify the relevant land owner.” The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) are investigating the incident. Kangaroos are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and DELWP is encouraging people with information to come forward. “We have received a report of a skinned kangaroo being found near the township of Wallan and are investigating,” DELWP Senior Wildlife Officer Gary Dash said. “The maximum penalty for hunting, taking or destroying protected wildlife without a permit is $7773 or six months’ imprisonment or both.” People can provide information anonymously by phoning the DELWP Customer Service Centre on 136 186, the local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sequins shine at ACK
Glitter and glam: ACK’s Owen Pyne (standing) as Shakey Threwer in deep conversation with his family (from left) Joshua Citarevic, Darcy Panayiotis and Briannah Borg as he tries to make them understand his glitter rock dreams. School cultural captains Rachel Berger and Jasmine Roberts explained there was to be no senior production in 2017, before a dedicated band of senior students, who had spent all their school years participating in productions, decided they did not wish to miss out on their final curtain call at ACK and
worked hard to bring the production to the stage. “With the help of particular Year 12 students , Megan Taylor, Amy Pizzlato and Rachel Donegan, the show was a great success and provided the community of Kilmore a nostalgic look back into the 70s,” Ms Berger and Ms Roberts said.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students who demonstrated a sense of leadership and professionalism during each rehearsal and for going above and beyond their requirements as students to ensure the senior production ran smoothly, while maintaining a relaxed and enjoyable environment
to produce a memorable experience for all students involved.” The 2017 junior production, Mulan staged on Thursday, May 18 was also considered a great success for the performing arts department at the school. Both productions held two performances of each with all shows sold out.

TRANSPORTED back to the days of 1970s glitter rock, the audience at Assumption College’s 2017 senior production Sequinned Suits and Glitter Boots were taken on a humorous and at times risqué journey back to a time of rebellion and change. Performed in the school’s auditorium on Friday, May 19, the play told the story of leading character Shakey Threwer, portrayed with great depth by Owen Pyne, as he battled his desire to be a glitter rock star and also attract the attention of his dream girl. Pyne, well supported by the engaging Briannah Borg as his sister and hilarious turns from Darcy Panayiotis and Joshua Citarevic as his parents, epitomised the break from traditional and expected roles of children in the family unit in the turbulent and changing 70s and through the use of a narrator, spoken by Samuel Moreira, was able to portray the shifting allegiances and priorities his young, adolescent mind was challenged with. The whole production, ranging from such stand out performances from Tiernan Devine as David Bowie, a marvellous supporting cast of colourful characters to the dedicated efforts of those behind the scenes with sets and costumes, gained even greater accolades with it being fully driven and produced by the 2017 Year 12 students.

Call out for junior netball WALLAN Junior Indoor Netball Association are calling out for interested players ahead of the 2017 season to begin in Term 3 in August. The ever popular competition has seen a drop in registrations this year and the association is keen to assure locals that the season will go ahead and encourages former and interested players to get in contact as soon as possible. For over seven years WJINA has provided junior netballers with a fun and supportive midweek netball experience that has proven extremely popular with families already struggling with weekend sport commitments. Last season the competition had over 30 teams competing in Under 9s, Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 15s divisions and has always been a well- respected and formative place for young netballers to develop their skills and confidence in the local area. “We are not sure why numbers have been down for registration this season. We understand that other sporting opportunities are now available to girls such as football in the local area but still encourage parents and children to attend the upcoming meet and greet days to come and have a chat with the committee,” committee member Liz Stoward said. Meet and Greet days will be held on Thursday, June 15 and Thursday July 20 at 4.30pm at RB Robson Stadium in Wallan.
The WJINA season runs for 12 weeks, plus finals and will commence on Thursday, August 3. Costs are $90 per player and this includes 2017 Netball Victoria VNA membership. Age requirements for grades are as follows: Under 9s – (born in 2009 or 2008) Please note WJINA recommend that first time players at this level should have some prior netball or NetSetGo experience. Under 11s – (born in 2007 or 2006) Under 13s – (born in 2005 or 2004) Under 15s – (born in 2003 or 2002) Boys are most welcome, however they must be born in 2004 or later and are welcome to play up in the Under 15 division. With lots of new families to the area, the committee is hopeful new players will be encouraged to join in the fun. If you are only a single player or cannot put a whole team together do not hesitate to contact the committee who will lend a hand with putting you in contact with other teams. For any further information or enquiries please contact the committee via email at
[email protected] or visit the website at www. wallananddistrictnetball.org. au or head to the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ Wallan-Junior-Indoor-Netball
Community call: WJINA committee members (from left) Liz Stoward, Marita Perry and Leitu Mailata surrounded by their junior netballers are keen to hear from more young players in the district.

WRITING THE WAR:
15
Personal stories from WWI KILMORE Customer and Library Service Centre will host a touring exhibition this July to commemorate the centenary of World War I. The exhibition will explore the personal stories of ordinary Australians told through their photographs, letters and diaries. Presented by State Library Victoria, Writing the war: Personal stories from WWI tells the story of Australia’s involvement in WWI seen through the eyes of seven Australians from very different backgrounds – a teacher, nurse, bank clerk, farmer, journalist, artist and an activist.
Their experiences are brought to life through personal and published writings, photos, drawings and multimedia, which takes viewers from Gallipoli to Egypt and Gaza to the Western Front.
The free exhibition, which runs in Kilmore from July 4 to August 15, will also feature memorabilia and personal materials from Mitchell Shire community members who served in WWI.
Some of these writings helped shape public opinion about the war effort, such as Sir Keith Murdoch’s Gallipoli letter or the writing of pacifist Vida Goldstein.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the exhibition was a rare look into the experiences of a varied group of Australians during WWI.
Some were never intended to be read in public, like the diaries of George Auchterlonie, which remained in his family’s possession for more than 70 years.
“These diaries and letters of both prominent and ordinary Australians give us an insight into WWI that is immediate and intimate because it is told in their own words,” Cr Sanderson said.
“Mitchell Shire has a rich military history and we are thrilled to have been selected to host such a significant exhibition.” Kilmore is one of 12 regional libraries and galleries across Victoria that will host the exhibition until June 2018. For more information visit: www.slv.vic.gov.au/writing-the-war The Writing the war exhibition tour is supported by the Victoria Government through Creative Victoria.
Police Beat Caught in the act POLICE officers on nightshift have surprised would-be thieves attempting to steal copper wire from the railway line. Prompt police response coupled with a bit of bad luck for the offenders led to one male being arrested at the scene of the crime. He has been charged and will appear in court at a later date.
Frozen goods Police are investigating the theft of frozen goods and chocolates from a local supermarket last week after a man was observed on CCTV placing the items down his pants before leaving the store. The investigation is continuing to identify the male offender.
Theft of motor vehicle A ute was stolen last week from a business in Elizabeth Street, Seymour. Offenders broke into the premises and stole the vehicle which was parked at the rear. The vehicle was last seen heading towards the Hume Freeway and enquiries are continuing in a bid to locate the offenders. In a separate incident another utility was stolen from a rural property in Seymour last week. Unfortunately the farmer, who leaves his vehicle parked at the remote property overnight, had failed to remove the keys from the ignition, giving thieves the opportunity to steal the vehicle with little effort. The vehicle was found a short time later; however the numberplates had been removed and have not yet been located.
Community Investments Night
Brazen petrol thief Police are investigating two thefts of petrol by the same vehicle last week, with both incidents occurring on the same day. The thief filled up his vehicle twice at the same petrol station, once in the morning and again that afternoon, driving off both times without making payment. Details of the male and his vehicle have been supplied to police, who will continue their investigation.
Quarry damage Two quarries in the area were victims of damage and theft last week. One quarry in Seymour had two sets of gates rammed by a vehicle while it was closed, and another had a vehicle stolen by the offenders.
Information sought A motorist is seeking the help of police after losing power tools off the back of his ute last week. The man had his tools stored in the tray of his utility while driving down towards Seymour from Avenel and didn’t realise his tray was not closed properly. Any person with information regarding the location of the tools is asked to contact Seymour Police Station.
Representatives of your community group are invited to celebrate our Community Investments of the 2016/2017 Financial Year. Thursday 27 July 2017, 6pm supper for a 6.30pm start Trackside, Kilmore Racing Club, East Street, Kilmore RSVP 22 July 2017 to

A note from LSC Marks There was some outstanding work by members of the Seymour Police Station last week after numerous high profile offenders were caught for a number of offences. More details on these apprehensions will follow in next week’s news report. If anyone has any information regarding any criminal activity they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be left anonymously. For immediate police response please call Triple Zero (000).

THOMAS Stanley (Stan) Lambie was born on April 23, 1893 in Clunes, the eldest son and second of seven children of Thomas and Edith Lambie (nee Harvey). Stan’s father was the station master at Kilmore Junction (now known as Heathcote Junction) from 1912-1914. Stan worked as a labourer in the area before moving to Port Melbourne where he was employed as a baker. He enlisted in the AIF on January 18, 1915 as a reinforcement to the 4th Light Horse Brigade (Service no 1028) and trained at the Broadmeadows camp. Stan’s papers reveal that he had previously received some military training in the cadets at North Melbourne. He was quite tall for the time at just over six feet (180cm) and had brown hair and eyes and nominated his religion as Presbyterian. Soldiers of ‘Private’ rank earned five shillings per day in the AIF and Stan allotted 60 percent of his pay in favour of his father, presumably to be used to support the family. Stan embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Ceramic’ on June 25, 1915 and landed at Gallipoli in October 1915. After the evacuation he was hospitalised in Alexandria with jaundice. In March 1916 he transferred to the 2nd Division Ammunition Column which was responsible for supplying munitions to the Division and was promoted to Corporal. In November 1917, Stan joined the 11th Battery of the
Thomas Stanley Lambie 4th Field Artillery Brigade and spent some time in England at Artillery School. He returned to France where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He was gassed in October 1918 and was evacuated to a hospital in England. After recovering from his wounds, and as the war ended, Stan married Margaret (Maggie) McGregor Smith, native of Killmarnock, Scotland in November 1918 and overstayed his leave (was found to be AWOL) to enjoy his honeymoon. Maggie was 10 years older than Stan. She sailed to Australia in February 1919 and
was met in Melbourne by her father-in-law. Stan returned to Australia a month later and was discharged in April 1919 as ‘medically unfit’. They had a son (Thomas) and eventually moved to Manangatang where they farmed for many years. Stan died at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on March 27, 1951 and was buried in the Manangatang Cemetery. His name is listed on the Wallan Soldiers Memorial and on the plaques inside the old hall on High Street. (Contributed by a local Wallan historian)

Childrens Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, General Dentistry, Periodontist Bulk Billed Child Benefits Scheme, DVA & Dental Vouchers welcome.
In Chair Sleep Dentistry ESSENTITAL nutrients are those the body cannot synthesise on its own and are necessary for the body to function properly. Therefore these nutrients must be provided by your dietary intake. There are six essential nutrients and these include carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water.
Carbohydrates
Fat
Minerals
Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the brain. Without carbohydrates, the body cannot function properly. Sources include fruits, breads and grains, starchy vegetables and sugars. Experts encourage people to ensure half of the grains you consume are whole grains. Whole grains and fruit are full of fibre, which reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and helps maintain normal blood glucose levels.
Fat is an energy source that when consumed, increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E and K. Twenty to 35 percent of your daily intake should come from fat. Choose healthy options such as omega-3-rich foods like fish, walnuts and vegetable-based oils. Omega-3s help with development and growth. Experts encourage people to limit their intake of saturated fats such as high-fat meats and full-fat dairy. Other smart choices include nuts, seeds and avocado.
Sodium helps to maintain fluid volume outside of the cells and helps cells to function normally. Keep intake under 2400 milligrams per day. Potassium maintains fluid volume inside and outside of cells and prevents the excess rise of blood pressure with increased sodium intake. Rich sources include bananas, potatoes and tomatoes. Calcium helps to maintain and build strong bones and teeth. Include three servings of calcium-rich foods per day including milk, low-fat cheese and yogurt in your diet.

Water
Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which provides structure to blood vessels, bone and ligaments. Rich sources include citrus fruits, strawberries and peppers. Folate, found in foods, helps to prevent birth defects. Pregnant women or women who plan to become pregnant should speak with their physician about taking a folic acid supplement, the synthetic form of folate, in addition to their diet. Vitamin D helps to maintain calcium homeostasis. It can be found in food sources or synthesised by the sun.
Water helps to maintain homeostasis in the body and transports nutrients to cells. Water also assists in removing waste products from the body. All beverages and high-moisture foods such as soup and watermelon contain water and count towards your daily water requirement. Adults should consume 25 to 35 millilitres of fluids per kilogram body weight or two to three litres per day.

Protein Protein is the major structural component of cells and is responsible for the building and repair of body tissues. Protein is broken down into amino acids, which are building blocks of protein. Nine of the 20 amino acids, known as essential amino acids, must be provided in the diet as they cannot be synthesised in the body. Ten to 35 percent of a person’s daily calorie intake should come from lean protein sources such as low-fat meat, dairy, beans or eggs.

Keeping your pets warm in Winter AS the winter chill really sets in, people are reminded that there are a number of things responsible owners can do to ensure their pets stay warm too. Certain pets are more affected by the cold than others, particularly older pets or those with certain ailments, like arthritis. Here are some ways to keep your pet warm this winter. Buy the right breed for the climate. You can start off by picking a breed made for bitter winters, especially if you live in colder climates and expect to be outside with a dog for a significant amount of time. Dogs good for cold climates include Alaskan malamutes, Siberian huskies and chow chows. Long-haired cats also handle the cold better, though all cats are better off indoors. Keep them indoors. This is the surest way to keep your pet warm. Dogs, while they enjoy outings, are often happier indoors as well so they can dote on their owners. Get them jackets and coats. If your home is a little chilly, cute jackets and sweaters can keep them warm. If they are going outside with you into the snow (dogs more than cats), it’s better to choose something that has a waterproof nylon covering.
Check the temperature before going out. In winter, as in summer, the temperature can feel worse than what the thermometer reads. Check the temperature and the wind chill factor to keep your dog from getting a chill. Proper outdoor housing. If your dog spends a lot of its time outdoors, make sure it has the right housing. His doghouse should have a sloped roof, insulation and blankets if it is expected to live in there. Bedding. Its bed should be at least three inches off the cold floor to avoid drafts. Low platforms made of a light wood or aluminium frame with canvas stretched over it suit most pets just fine. Provide more food. Dogs use up more calories in the winter trying to stay warm. Feed them a little more in the winter months, especially if they spend a lot of time outside. Use a hot water bottle or snuggle disk. If your home is chilly, you can keep your pet warm by using a hot water bottle under its bed or even a snuggle disk, which is a manufactured disk that is heated in a microwave oven and can maintain heat for hours. Don’t forget the occasional special treat and the belly-rub. Nothing warms your pets heart more than special food and attention, so give them both.

How clean is your windscreen? CLEANING your vehicle’s windscreen is not only one of the easiest car care jobs you can do yourself it’s also one of the most important. A dirty or even dulled windscreen can be a serious safety hazard – and it looks unsightly. At times you may not notice how dirty the glass has become or how much it impairs your road vision until the sun blasts through the windscreen or visibility gets very poor. For safety purposes it’s necessary to clean your car’s windscreen and windows frequently. To clean the glass effectively you don’t need expensive cleaners and the process shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. The first step is to wipe down the interior windscreen with a dry microfiber cloth. Spray the entire surface of the interior with an automotive glass cleaner available at any car parts store and some petrol stations. Using the clean side of your cloth, wipe the windscreen all around the top edges. This will prevent dirt getting stuck in this area and travelling down and dirtying the glass after you’ve cleaned it. Then, switch to a clean cloth, spray the inside edges of the windscreen again and wipe them down. Wipe the remaining middle section of the glass, spraying with more glass cleaner as necessary. Give the glass a final wipe over with a clean, dry cloth. Moving to the outside of the car, wipe off one side of the exterior windscreen with a cloth. Once you spray the area with the glass cleaner wash it off with a hose and dry with a clean, lint free towel. Then repeat the process on the other side of the windscreen in the same manner. A good tip is to pour a small amount of white vinegar onto a clean cloth. Wipe over the interior and exterior of the windscreen with the vinegar to make is sparkling clean.

Four Wheel Driving in Winter WINTER can be a fantastic time to get out onto some of Victoria’s best 4WD tracks but it always pays to remember winter comes with its own set of safety concerns and there are a few things to take into account before hitting those tracks in wet conditions. Your chance of getting bogged may increase Even the smallest amount of water can turn your standard track into a slippery mess. You may have been out there plenty of times in dry conditions but rain can completely change any conditions so always make sure you have recovery gear. Snatch straps are not suitable for heavily bogged vehicles. A snatch strap works by releasing kinetic energy to pull a bogged 4WD out of trouble, but if the vehicle is badly bogged (ie over the height of the axle) the vehicle in the mud will apply more force that what the snatch strap can hold and could end up smashing through your windscreen. Experts encourage you to stick to using recovery boards and/or a winch. Travel with a mate You should always travel with another 4WD. If worse comes to worse you have a lift home but two or more vehicles can assist each other in times of need.
Water should be approached with high caution Water crossings in a 4WD are a lot of fun unless you get it horribly wrong. Not taking care when travelling through water is one of the easiest ways to do seriously expensive damage to your car. It is not always the wide, fast flowing rivers that cause the damage. A simple hole in the ground that’s filled with water has the same potential to totally ruin your vehicle. Do you have a snorkel? A snorkel raises the air intake of your 4WD from under the bonnet level to almost roof height. All you need is a teaspoon of water to get into your engine and you’ll need major mechanical work. For many vehicles, that’s enough to write it off. Snorkels are great insurance when it comes to water crossings. If you don’t have a snorkel, find out where your air intake is (usually in the inner guard), and pay attention to it, usually anything over 30-50cm deep is pushing your luck. Check the depth and firmness Before you drive your 4WD through water, you should always check the depth and firmness of the bottom. The easiest way to do this is with a stick, just poke it into the ruts, and see how far it sinks. You’ll know
if the bottom is hard, you have a much better chance than if the stick just keeps going down! Check the water flow Depth is just one thing. If the water is flowing then you need to be very careful. They say if you can’t easily walk through it, then you shouldn’t drive through it. The deeper the water, the less flow required to pick your car up and push it down the river. Drop a bit of bark into the water and watch it float downstream. If it moves faster than walking pace, it’s a miss for the crossing! Do you need to drive through it? More often than not, 4WDs that get into strife don’t even need to drive through the water crossing in the first place. If there’s a solid track around the water crossing, it’s the safest bet. Don’t hit it with speed Water crossings should be entered gently, with enough speed to create a small wave of water in front of the vehicle that stays there the whole way across. If you enter with a big splash, you risk getting water where it shouldn’t go. Gently does it, and aim for a perfect bow wave.
The cleanup If you haven’t had the privilege of detailing a filthy 4WD covered in mud, count your lucky stars. Mud is terrible to clean. Sometimes you get lucky and it hoses off, but if it has any clay content, you are going to need to wet it, then physically remove it. Ten minutes in the mud can take hours to properly clean off. Make sure you do clean it ASAP too, as it can have a high salt content and if left, will cause rust to begin. Additional mechanical wear and tear to your 4WD Mud is shocking when it comes to damage done to your 4WD. It’s so fine and sloppy that it works its way into everywhere you don’t want it. Seals, bearings, differentials, brakes, radiators and pretty much anywhere you can name that you wouldn’t want mud, it’s going to get.
Those who regularly do water crossings and play in the mud have to maintain their 4WD’s at a much higher rate than those who don’t. Mud’s a lot of fun, but it’s keeping your mechanic in business! Your tyres must suit the terrain Four-wheel drive tyres are critical. They are the only thing that touches the ground and provides you with the traction needed to brake, corner and accelerate. Winter brings rain, and rain brings mud and a massive lack of traction. You must have suitable tyres when it comes to driving in winter. If you are still running the slicks (or highway terrains) that many vehicles come with, do not head out when it’s wet. Highway terrains just don’t cut the mustard when it comes to 4WDriving in the wet, they just aren’t able to bite into the ground enough to keep you moving. It’s not just frustrating, they can be dangerous.

With workshops spread across the two days that included such topics as Understanding Marketing; Pricing for Maximum Profit, Developing your Online Strategy and Improving Your Time Management, attendees were also invited to a conference network lunch which allowed them to come together, share their experiences and discover each other. The conference was hosted by Macedon Ranges Business Connect (MRBC) with individual workshops presented by Small Business Victoria. Local business knowledge: attendees at the Macedon Ranges Business Conference (from left) Robert Sanderson (Riddells Creek PC’s), Matt McKenna (Site Cut) and Steve Kimmins (ESK Enterprises) were impressed with the knowledge they gained from the time management workshop. MRBC is a not-for-profit local group that supports all business types and hobbyists in the Macedon Ranges Shire. They aim to learn, share experiences, be inspired and grow their business. They host presentations, cafe catchups and workshops, both daytime and evenings across the shire with members attending most of these at no charge. Attendees spoke highly of the event and how it assists local small business owners. “This has provided great information for the diverse range of businesses that are here. We all have similar struggles and the conference has provided valuable tools that can be a starting point to helping us work through these struggles,” proprietor of Riddells Creek PC’s Robert Sanderson said. Owner of Site Cut, an excavation and drainage business in Gisborne, Matt McKenna, was very impressed with the hard copy information booklets provided and the fact he will have something to refer to in the future. “You always pick up things at these kind of workshops that you can adapt and use for yourself. When you operate a small business you are always learning something and I will be able to look back at this information to remind myself how to handle these situations,” he said. ment machine business recognised how important it is for business owners to come together and share experiences. “It is good to reconfirm that you are not on your own with these kind of worries and every business experiences them. They also offered great tools to work through issues you may face,” Mr Kimmins said. Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Manager Economic Development and Tourism, Kylie Lethbridge said council had delivered the two day conference in this format in 2014 and 2015, and it was hailed by Small Business Victoria as a unique way to offer their workshop program. “To hand the management of the 2017 conference over to Macedon Ranges Business Connect was a way to build capacity within the group, and we are pleased with the results and positive feedback received from participants,” she said. “Forty-one individual businesses attended the conference with 136 bookings overall. Participants could choose from 14 workshops and many took advantage of the packages and booked in for multiple sessions. “Going forward, we are keen to work with our local business networks by providing marketing and other support to run more of these events.”

30 NORTH CENTRAL & WHITTLESEA REVIEW / THE FREE PRESS, Tuesday, June 13, 2017
Country living attracts a crowd THE hills in High Camp were alive with the sound of nature lovers recently. About 20 people, including young families, travelled to the area on Sunday, June 4 to enjoy a ‘Living in Nature’ open day hosted by conservation organisation Trust for Nature. Trust by Nature had several properties on show, which it is selling so it can purchase and protect more land rich in habitat for native wildlife.
Visitors were treated to a beautiful, sunny day in the countryside, which was perfect for guided walks led by Trust for Nature staff along the ridge of the ‘Crawfords Track’ and ‘Eagles Landing’ properties. Along the tour, the visitors heard how conservation covenants are used to protect private land. They also had the opportunity to inspect a number of potential housing sites with brilliant views of the valley beyond. “These places are an opportunity to literally own your own nature reserve,” says Trust for
Nature’s Commercial Services Manager, Chris Cook. “They are home to sugar gliders, echidnas, wombats, phascogales and a wide variety of plants and birds.” Trust for Nature has used its Revolving Fund to purchase 62 properties which it has protected with conservation covenants. It has since sold 57, preserving 6834 hectares of prime conservation land throughout Victoria. For more information visit www.trustfornature.org.au
Wildlife conservation: Shelagh Curmi from Trust for Nature’s Goulburn Broken regional team talks to the visitors about the properties.

A visit from the Royal Flying Doct by Chloe Jordan and Sophie Reynolds
Interesting learning: Willowmavin Primary School students were treated to a visit from the Royal Flying Doctors Service last week.
Hey Kids!
ON Monday, June 5 the Royal Flying Doctors Service came to our school to visit and teach us about their service and their work. It was fun and it taught us many interesting facts. Tom taught us about the Royal Flying Doctors service, he visited our school a few years ago. He taught us many interesting facts such as who founded the Royal Flying Doctors. We learnt that the founder, John Flynn is pictured on the front of the $20 note with the first Royal Flying Doctors plane. Mr Flynn raised money to buy the first plane for the flying doctors service. We also got to explore the simulator which is worth $600,000. We all had to be very careful while we were inside the aeroplane because it is worth such a lot of money. Inside there were many cool things. Some of our students were lucky enough to have a good look at the cockpit and a lot of the other equipment like radio headphones that you could use and talk with other people on the other side of the plane. There were also oxygen masks, a stretcher and teddy bears to make kids feel safe. We also got to try on virtual reality goggles which were really fun and cool to play around with and there were all different kinds of views to look at.

2017 Romsey Open Tournament THE annual Romsey Golf Club Open was played on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4. Saturday June 3: The 4BBB Pairs. The 37th Romsey Open began under clear skies, with almost no wind and steady sunshine. This was quite a change from the past four years where the weather had been both wet and very cold. Men’s and Women’s teams came from Midlands, Lancefield, Kyneton, Romsey, Trentham, Woodlands, Seymour, Gisborne and Woodend Golf Clubs. After the excellent early autumn rains, the mild weather and good dews the fairways and most greens were in excellent condition. Players did struggle with the remains of the summer’s bird damage on two greens however in general the greens were very receptive to good approach shots and putted quite true. The field of 44 moved around the course with few hold-ups and the course echoed with shouts as putts dropped or just grazed the side of the cup. At about 3.30pm the field was in the rooms enjoying a country afternoon tea and chatting while the cards were checked and awards organised. As the round progressed the weather warmed and it was a pleasure to be out on the park. There was some excellent golf played with a number of teams well into the 40 Stableford point range. Perhaps the highlight was 42 pts (out of 44) by Jenny Hartley. RGC Presidnt Anthony Lakey, thanked the day’s sponsor P and V Newell Electricals and other club sponsors, all the club members who had worked to prepare the course and the members who had make and served the food and look after the day’s refreshments. He also acknowledged Dalhousie District president, Sue McCall, RGC life members John Laing, Bruce Robb and Peter Scanlon as well as past club captains and champions who were present. On a beautiful day the results were;
Men’s Winners Darren Newnham (12)/Andrew Evans (9) - 48 pts from Chris vanDerVliet (25)/Scott Williams (19) - 44pts Women’s Winners Jenny Hartley (36)/Denise O’Mera (45) - 44 pts from Elaine Scanlon (33)/Virginia Newell (20) - 43 pts. NTPs 1st - Andrew Evans, 15th - Phil Newell & 16th Mick Nicholls Snr SUNDAY JUNE 4 24 Hole Stroke Players began arriving at about 8.30am for a 9.30am hit-off. The morning had dawned with a heavy frost and there was a distinct chill in the air. This was most noticed by Bob McLennan who
braved the elements to mow the greens before the field hit off. Clubs represented were Lancefield, Euroa, Romsey, Strathbogie, Seymour, Broadford, Mt Macedon, Melton Valley and Northern. With three ex-champions in the field it was sure to be a tough competition. The morning round saw a very chilly start, cold air and heavy dew reduced run on the fairways but as the morning warmed up so did the golf. Last week’s Lancefield Open winner Chris Lingard and Euroa low marker Mark Corradin put in top first 12 holes to be in the rooms for lunch just three over the card. The tight fairways and small greens were very unforgiving and only the most accurate of players was in with a chance of posting a good score off the stick. Other good returns in A-Grade were from wily veteran Lance Carracher – 49 with Ian Richardson and Chris Hansen on 50.
In B-Grade Peter Nelson also turned in an excellent front 12 with a 49 from Graeme Hogg – 51 and Michael McCarten – 52. C Grade, the Munro boys had it with Scott – 55 and Cody – 7. With the sun out and the air still, the back 12 promised a tight finish. At one stage it looked as if B-Grade’s Peter Nelson (8) was going to upstage everyone before A Graders Chris Lingard and Hugh Parks got really serious over the final few holes. As the players headed for the rooms the title was still up for grabs and many eyed the scoreboard as cards came in and were checked. Good second rounds came from Chris Lingard and Hugh Parks in A-Grade, Peter Nelson and Mick Prorok in B-Grade and Scott and Cody Munro in C-Grade. The day’s results were: A Grade: Chris Lingard - 94 Dennis Davenport - 92 B Grade; Peter Nelson -96 Mick Prorok - 89 C Grade: Scott Munro - 113 Cody Munro - 79 AM H/C: Cody Munro - 39 PM H/C: Jim Patton - 41 2/3 NTPs:

An early XVIII – 1908 Looking Back IN 2018 Assumption will celebrate its 125th year since foundation in 1893. The college today is but the harvest of long years of honest toil and sacrifice of the Marist Brothers and subsequently lay teachers who have laboured in Kilmore across the time span. Assumption became widely known and its ex-students are to be found in all walks of life and in many climes. ACK had a modest beginning in keeping with the early years of the Marist Order and of its foundation in other lands around the globe. The founder of Assumption was Brother Austin Somers who was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1852. When a young lad, his parents moved to Dundee in Scotland where he made acquaintance with the Marists. Accepted into the Order, he made novitiate in France and then went on to work in schools in the UK and Africa. Transferred to Australia in 1892, his first assignment ‘Down Under’ was the foundation of the college in Kilmore.

Songs around the parlour piano 1920s.
Brother Austin guided the new school through its initial four years overcoming inevitable hardships and difficulties until he was recalled to Sydney in 1897. He was replaced by Brother Gabriel Harroway who is recorded as one of the great headmasters. HHH
Football and Cricket were the popular ‘flagship’ sports from the beginning and across the generations fine traditions were forged in both past times. HHH
The first ever boarder, Kevin Carrucan arrived on Assumption Day 1900 (August 15) and in that same day the school became Assumption College. HHH
Assumption’s long, proud history has been well chronicled in books and newspapers over the century and a quarter. It’s a far cry today from earlier times when it was somewhat a Spartan existence compared to the modern era. For several decades until the early seventies, for example, boarders were only able to return home for school holidays. Some far distant students only made it home at year’s end. In the sixties, there were around 330 boarders and 80 day students. Girls were first enrolled in 1971 – just two locals. Today of course the total numbers approach 1300, with male and female numbers about equal.
Despite the rigours and the hardships of earlier times the majority of boarders across the several decades look back with fondness – many claiming it shaped their character. For example, times were still pretty tough when Frances Bourke, the late Peter Crimmins, Neale Daniher and their kind were in residence. All said they owed those tougher times and dedicated Brothers and teachers a lot.
Those ACK students who were killed or maimed on the battlefields of the 20th century, along with those who survived the carnage, most all had football and cricket backgrounds from schooldays. HHH
They were certainly far simpler times as the picture of songs around the piano in the 1920s shows.
Boys of earlier times at ACK had a simple verse motto – “We’ve got a standard to fight for, And we’ve a proud banner unfurled; We’ll hold it on high when battles draw neigh, And thus we’ll go out to the world.”
HHH
HHH
HHH
What those lads may have lacked in regards to material possessions was compensated by a remarkable spirit and friendships that survived down the generations. HHH
Cricket and football were the flagship sports and many ‘Dark and Light Blue’ boys progressed to high honours in both areas. And the teams of winter and summertime forged wonderful reputations that came to be acknowledged nationwide. An established fact is that more than 90 per cent of all involved in the two sports, for a century or more, went on to achieve well in adult life – in professions, trades, agriculture, business and community life. I’ve always believed the playing field is a great classroom. Lessons of life may be learned such as team work, courage, ability to rise above setbacks and that sometimes we have to lose before we become winners.
Varia Recently I met up with Peter ‘Crackers’ Keenan who attended ACK from 1963 -69. A boarder from Wilby, near Yarrawonga, Peter was popular boy at college and he went on to a successful footy career followed by a long stint in the media. He played 215 games with three clubs – Melbourne, North Melbourne and Essendon. He was ruck in the Kangaroos’ 1977 premiership side. He gave 100 per cent always despite being afflicted in later years with often severe ankle and knee problems. Years ago I spent hours with him compiling stories for the book titled Just Crackers. His life has been full of interest, kindness and humour, also loyalty to friends.

Golf Tip
Kevin Carrucan
Limiting the height of the follow through will effectively reduce the height of your shots. The lower the hands, the lower the ballflight. Moving the ball back in your stance or choosing a stronger club and trying to swing easy are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but they’re less reliable and more difficult to execute. Instead, keep your hands low in the finish and the trajectory of your shots will be lower.
Initially the school was on the site of what is today, the Kilmore International School. In 1893 Kilmore was described as an agricultural and pastoral district with dairying a feature. The town’s population was 1100. Two of the first recorded day pupils were Noel Freyne and Joe Morrissey.
The college in 1913.
In 1969 he was part of the ACK First XVIII beaten by a solitary point in the AGSV final played before a very large crowd at Victoria Park; then the home field of Trinity Grammar. The Assumption side on the day was captained by Michael O’Donnell, older brother of Simon, and contained five boys who went almost immediately to VFL (now AFL) footy. They were Keenan himself, Laurie Serafini (Fitzroy) and Phil Ryan (North Melbourne).

Standing proud: congratulations Sean Carr on 50 fantastic games for the Broadford Junior Football Netball Club.
Assumption Football by Ray Carroll XAVIER College returned the Keenan Cup with a 31 points win in a hard fought clash at ACK last Friday. A good crowd enjoyed the keen, though scrappy tussle. The visitors led throughout although the Blues were several times within a couple of goals. Both sides were without key players. Carlton ‘young gun’ Jack Silvagni was on hand to watch his young brother in action for Xavier. One of the Xavier coaches is Luke Ball, the former St Kilda and Magpies star. Brian Keenan (ex ACK) and a niece of the late Fr Paul Keenan were present to present the Cup after play. The trophy of course is in honour of the late Jesuit who captained Assumption and in later years coaches Xavier. All abilities on show
THE Mitchell Rangers Soccer Club have always looked to allow anyone and everyone a chance to experience soccer, but this season has looked to go a step further. The introduction of two women’s teams have already added to the diversity of the club and both teams have already produced some thrilling matches. However, it is the addition of the All Abilities team that has really made the club accessible to the whole community. Through the hard work and endeavour of coach Paul Sirianni, the team is currently competing in the first All Abilities League in Australia, with the first match being played last week with the Rangers running out 7-3 victors against Doveton Special Soccer School. The second round will be coming up this Saturday, on June 17 with the Mitchell Rangers hosting Doveton SSS and Collingwood City FC in a three-game spectacle. Midseason review THE Queen’s Birthday long weekend, while devoid of matches in both the RDFNL and NFL competitions, gives teams and coaches a chance to take stock of their current position and how the season has gone so far. The North Central Review takes a look at each local side and how they stand coming up to the midway point of season 2017.
Current place: 12th (last) Wins/losses: 0-7 Reality has come crashing down for the Roos in 2017 after a couple of highly competitive seasons in the Riddell District Football League. The loss of a large number of senior players, added to the clubs struggles to get a reserve grade side on the field each week and having no Under 18.5’s it hasn’t been the best start to a season the Roos have ever experienced. Currently in last place and yet to post a win the Roos continue to blood their young talent and senior playing coach James Philpot is determined to nurture the future of the footy club and give them valuable playing experience. Three of these youngsters Joel Mann, Patrick Coppinger and Josh Vilinskis were RDFNL representatives in the recent interleague Under 18.5 squad and continue to be stand out performers for the Roos as they battle to be competitive each week. It is never an easy task to maintain a sense of purpose in a side when they face an uphill battle each week, but the Roos are made of stern stuff and Philpot is confident if the side continues to stay committed wins will come for the group. The Roos have come up against some of the strongest sides in the competition, including Macedon, Rupertswood and Sunbury Kangaroos and will no doubt be hopeful a win for the embattled side is not too far ahead in the future.
Kilmore (NFL) Current place: 5 (Division 3) th
Wins/losses: 4-4 The Blues while happy that season 2017 has proven to be far more successful than those in its recent past, are also not prepared to take their foot off the pedal.
“Being four wins four losses isn’t bad. We would have liked another win or two but we are not complaining and can recognise the big improvement we have made this year,” senior coach Nathan Philips said. “The areas of key improvement have definitely been fitness and a team understanding of the game plan. The boys are really enjoying their footy and we go out there every week with a true belief we have the ability to win.” The Blues have shown a real maturity in their football in 2017. They back themselves in the contest, play a hard and contested style of football that puts heaps of pressure on their opponents and are working together as a team in difficult situations. “We have shown how we can match it with some of the best teams in the competition and all I want from this second half of the season is for the boys to improve their consistency of performance. We need to perform over four full quarters each week and I think the more we play together the better we will get at that,” Philips said. Philips has enjoyed seeing the improvement displayed by the whole side since day one of the preseason in 2016 and the efforts from some of his young stars who have really stepped up for the side this season. “It is great to see the message you are trying to convey to the side getting though and wins coming from their efforts on field.”
Wallan (RDFNL) Current place: 5th Wins/losses: 5 – 2 It has been a flying start to the season for the Magpies who after dropping their opening round against Macedon went on to win their next four games before an 11 point loss to Sunbury Kangaroos in round five. Stellar efforts against Riddell and Romsey in rounds two and three were definite highlights
for the side but they have yet to really apply four full quarters of the spectacular football they have shown they are capable of. Currently in fifth with five wins the side are poised to really make their mark in 2017 but cannot continue to show lapses like they have recently against Melton Centrals if they wish to compete with the big boys and stay in finals contention. Equal on points with third placed Rupertswood and fourth placed Sunbury Kangaroos, both games the Magpies have dropped have been against top four sides and they still are yet to tackle reigning premiers Diggers Rest or
the well drilled Rupertswood. Daniel Nolan has been an outstanding addition to the Magpies nest. He is an inspiring leader and coach and is committed to ensuring the inroads the club has made over the last two season’s he has been at the helm will ensure a longevity of success at the club. He manages a mix of experience and youth that is working quite well on the field. With at times between 80-90 at preseason training, the buzz at Greenhills Reserve is real and has been since the end of last year.
