Fiber to the Desk (FTTD)
Mission: Fiber Enable IP Phones and Desktop Workstations
New FTTD Deployments
VoIP Deployments
Fiber NIC cards by Transition Networks allow for a simple integration path wherever fiber is available at the desktop. With our line of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet NICs – users will gain the benefits associated with deploying fiber optic cabling within the LAN environment, including expanded bandwidth capacity and increased data security. Transition also offers PCI-Express (PCIe) adapter network interface cards to maximize bandwidth and bus efficiency while lowering power consumption on desktops, as well as, ExpressCard and PCMCIA adapter cards for delivering fiber optic connectivity to any laptop.
Many municipal and military agencies are using fiber optics at the desk (FTTD) to increase network speed and efficiency, while simultaneously reducing the risk of security breaches due to emissions given off over copper cabling. Transition Networks offers a wide range of copper-to-fiber conversion solutions, network interface cards (NICs) and switches for integrating fiber optic cabling with copper ports on network equipment in FTTD and Voice over IP (VoIP) deployments.
• Available for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet • Includes both standard and low profile mounting brackets • Options for supporting PCI, PCIX, PCIe, PCMCIA, and ExpressCard
• Supports Wake-on-LAN (WoL) • Supports PXE Remote Boot • Software drivers available to many common operating systems, includes Microsoft certified drivers
FTTD Deployments in Legacy Network Infrastructure Extend the life cycle of the network equipment you already have by delivering low cost, fiber optic connectivity directly to your desktop without having to replace your existing legacy copper NIC card. PCI powered media converters from Transition Networks are designed to install directly inside a workstation or file server and mount into any standard PCI slot. No hardware configuration or software driver installation is required. Since only power is drawn from the PCI slot, no additional CPU resources are being utilized.
• No need to replace existing NICs • Draws power directly from PCI slot; no power supply needed
• AutoCross, Link Pass Through, Auto-Negotiation, FarEnd-Fault, Automatic Link Restoration and Pause
• Easily installed inside a PC or file server; no configuration required
• More secure than a desktop media converter and less time consuming than installing a new NIC
A common challenge for FTTD deployments is that typical IP phones and workstations are only equipped with RJ-45 copper connections. Additionally, if there is a link loss in a VoIP environment, IP phones lose connectivity to the Call Manager® and need to be rebooted. Transition Networks’ Gigabit VoIP Media Converters allow network managers to fiber enable IP phones and desktops over the same gigabit backbone, reduce power consumption using Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), and connect their workstation via fiber. Equipped with Power Sourcing Equipment Link Pass Through (PSE/LPT), Transition Networks VoIP media converters will automatically reboot IP phones if there is a loss of link – saving government agencies money on services while ensuring 99.999% uptime for their critical applications.
• 10/100 or 10/100/1000 versions available • IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at Power-overEthernet is supported

Mission: Implement the Benefits of Fiber with Increased ROI Copper to Fiber Conversion
Mission: Increase Distance Limitations with Fiber Integration in the Data Center Data Center Consolidation
Mission: Increase Capacity on Existing Fiber Optic Infrastructure Fiber Conservation
The demands on today’s government networks are perpetually on the rise. Whether adding new users or new capabilities, network performance requirements often out-pace current cabling infrastructure. With virtually unlimited bandwidth support, fiber optic cabling can alleviate the expense of cabling plant upgrades that come with the adoption of new technologies, by providing a more future-proof solution. Fiber offers additional benefits over copper including, the ability to transmit greater distances and isolate data from sources of noise and interference, while providing increased security benefits.
Under the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative, an immense savings of tax payer dollars is expected by consolidating under-performing data centers and optimizing those in Federal inventory. Due to the consolidation, the optimized data center locations may grow in size beyond the distance supported by copper cabling. Adding Transition Networks’ Copper to Fiber media conversion products into your Data Center allows government agencies to maintain a Physical Layer, Transparent, Pass-through connection. The use of media conversion gives government agencies the reassurance that the data is NOT passing through a switched network, guaranteeing no added latency, no jitter, no packet inspections and no potential traffic sniffing.
User’s of today’s voice, video, and data networks are becoming more complex – requiring more bandwidth and faster transmission rates over ever increasing distances. To meet these demands, network managers are relying more on fiber optics, but the reality faced by many government entities is that laying more fiber is no longer an economical or feasible option once current fiber infrastructure is exhausted. In order to increase capacity on existing fiber infrastructure, many groups are turning to Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) technologies.
However, fiber integration is not as simple as replacing cabling and can incur high costs of replacing copper interfacing equipment with more expensive fiber equivalents. To reduce the expense of integrating fiber optics, Transition Networks’ media converters, supporting network speeds up to 10Gbps, can be used to establish links between new fiber cabling and existing copper based network devices by allowing users to connect fiber to their current RJ-45 based switches, routers, and NICs. Even new fiber interfacing devices may not support the fiber type or transmission distance needed for a particular application, requiring the use of Transition Networks’ media converters to interface between different cabling technologies.
• Central chassis for remote management and fault detection
• Configure via dip switches or management module • Plug-n-Play installation • AutoCross • Automatic Link Restoration • Networking protocols up to 10Gbps
Whether security devices are stored in leased, owned, co-located or stand-alone facilities, Transition Networks’ copper to fiber media conversion products can extend the distance limitations of copper cabling without replacing existing infrastructure. Transition Networks’ media conversion technology allows government agencies to consolidate data center locations securely and efficiently, further contributing to the ROI and cost saving goals of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative.
• Configure via dip switches or management module Transparently pass customer traffic including VLANs Alarms and traps for quick fault detection Plug-n-Play installation • AutoCross™

Transition Networks’ bi-directional wave division multiplexing (BWDM) products offer great cost savings by allowing network managers to double the capacity of existing fiber routes, with little to no changes to the general network design. Coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) products by Transition Networks multiplex multiple optical signals on a single fiber optic strand by using different wavelengths of laser light to carry the different signals, offering a multiplication effect of up to 16 times the capacity of existing fiber infrastructure. Transition Networks’ WDM products allow for scaling of your project to fit your exact needs easily and affordably.
• Realize multiplication of up to 16 times current fiber infrastructure
• Inexpensive • Requires little to no changes to network design • Multiple protocols supported

Physical Security, Outdoor Surveillance and Access Control
Mission: To Extend the Surveillance and Access Control Network from the Core to the Most Remote Node From theft prevention, to law enforcement, to protecting intellectual property, the demand for security and surveillance networks have increased dramatically over the past decade. Not only have the number of government security networks increased, but so have those networks’ geographic size. For these networks to continue increasing their area of surveillance, fiber optic cable is being introduced into the equation to overcome the distance limitations of copper-based networks and offer network architects more design options.

Along with the general proliferation of fiber into security-based networks, there has also been a changing of the guard with network cameras as analog cameras are being replaced by IP network cameras. Not only does the IP camera offer the ability to be checked remotely from anywhere, but most IP cameras also support Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology. PoE makes the installation of cameras, access controls, and other powered devices easier, since the piece of equipment can be powered over the same UTP cable being used to transmit the data signal. Transition Networks’ PoE switches, PoE media converters, and PoE injectors create the functional network needed in today’s diverse physical security and surveillance applications..
Transition Networks offers a wide selection of PoE and PoE Plus media converters and switches for deploying IP cameras in non-temperature controlled environments. Our line of hardened industrial gear and its extended operating temperature range is ideal for situations in which a remote camera needs to be placed in an enclosure along a highway or in a parking area. In addition to a robust, extended operating range – Transition Networks’ industrial rated converters and switches offer the ability for fiber integration, which is so important to outdoor surveillance networks, due to restrictions and limitations of a UTP or coax cable infrastructure.
Access control has advanced beyond gates, locked doors, and serial communications to include IP-based technology, such as, keypads, biometrics, smart cards, and radio frequency over Ethernet networks. Advanced access control systems offer unprecedented security, but also transmit complex, precise information that requires additional management control. Traditional rapid serial interfaces and terminal blocks can’t accommodate the bandwidth requirements or the extended distances that are required for the comprehensive access control systems of the future – making the integration of fiber optics and an Ethernet protocol a necessity. Transition Networks offer a range of PoE devices fit for the latest proliferation of access control networks.

Traffic Control Signaling and Vehicle Detection
Within Intelligent Transportation Systems, video surveillance equipment is being utilized for monitoring, but not the same monitoring function of say camera enclosures along the peripheral of an office building or parking ramp. The cameras within the traffic control system are utilized to monitor the flow of traffic and to identify any accidents or traffic congestion on the road, versus traditional surveillance/property-protection applications that commonly use IP cameras for intrusion detection and security. Due to the massive geographic area that these surveillance networks cover, the harsh environment, and the mission-critical function that they deliver, fiber optics and hardened industrialized equipment have become the choice for robust transportation systems.
The use of digital signage to notify drivers of accidents, emergencies, and commute times has become quite widespread throughout Intelligent Traffic Systems. The ability to communicate with motorists in a concise and efficient manner improves commute times, and allows drivers to avoid accident scenes. Digital signage is really an extension of the traffic control signaling and vehicle detection network -operating over the same mission-critical communication network and fiber-optic infrastructure to help disseminate relevant driver information and protect motorist safety.
Traffic signal control systems are utilized to coordinate the various individual traffic signals that, when linked together, help make up an entire Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). These systems consist of traffic control signals at intersections, partnered with ground detection loops or other means of detecting vehicles at an intersection, a robust communications network to link all of the intersection controllers together, and lastly a means to remotely manage and troubleshoot the entire traffic signal control system from a central location. Transition Networks’ hardened product portfolio is used to integrate the robust communications network and remote management system, which is based on an Ethernet protocol and runs across a fiber optic infrastructure.
