GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS INSTITUTE AT TREMONT POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Coordinator for Youth Programs Reports to: Manager of Youth Programs Job Status: salaried Category: exempt Classification: regular full-time PURPOSE OF POSITION As a key member of the program leadership team the Coordinator for Youth Programs strives for excellence in the development and implementation of programs in line with the strategic goals, mission and purposes of Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT). The Coordinator for Youth Programs is directly responsible for the logistical flow of programs, including working closely with the Youth Program Manager, staff, and stakeholders to create and staff program schedules for all youth programs. This position also includes teaching and faculty leadership. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned by supervisor. PROGRAM • • • • • • • Logistics and coordination of GSMIT youth programs, school year and summer. Develops and maintains positive & productive relationships with lead teachers, other visiting teachers, chaperones and students. Assists in development of lesson materials and works with program leadership team to update and develop new curricula to keep our school programs on the cutting edge of effective environmental education. Develops and teaches classes and leads hikes and expeditions with youth and adult programs as needed. Oversees the coordination of all school groups from the time of their arrival through follow-up activities when they return to school. Reviews schedules and staff assignments in preparation for the groups visit. On-site leadership, emergency response, and development or risk management practices FACULTY DEVELOPMENT • • • Articulates long-term vision/outcomes for teaching faculty and public Assists with hiring, training, and ongoing evaluation of program teaching faculty in coordination with Manager of Youth Programs Assists with coordination of summer staff training and development ADMINISTRATIVE • • • Oversees the inventory for program related supplies and materials. Serves as role model regarding teaching, conflict resolution, and community building Works with the program leadership team and registrar to coordinate and maximize group scheduling. /Users/laurabethtuttle/Desktop/Coordinator for Youth Programs.docxLast Revised: 6/23/17 ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES • • • • Operates a motor vehicle to transport program participants or to conduct other work activities. Represents GSMIT in professional settings, conferences, exhibits, etc. Maintain up-to-date training, minimum Wilderness First Responder Other duties as assigned by supervisor. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelors in Environmental Education, Nature Interpretation, or closely related field; supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes residential environmental education, summer youth/adult program operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Demonstrated experience with program development, management, and working with schools and teachers. Must have current Wilderness First Responder Training. Applicant must have a keen interest in, and aptitude for, Natural History and placed-based experiential education. Performance Aptitudes: COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Requires the ability to listen well, speak clearly and express thoughts effectively. This position must be a master communicator as they relate with large groups, small groups as well as individuals. DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS: Requires the ability to appropriately select and develop subordinates to enhance future potential. Must also produce excellence in programs. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Requires ability to generate necessary income from programs to sustain the organization as well as effectively plan and control program costs. INITIATIVE: Requires the ability to influence events rather than just accept them. LEADERSHIP SKILLS: Requires the ability to effectively create conditions that will motivate and guide individuals towards task accomplishments and a productive work environment. PLANNING, ORGANIZATION, AND PROBLEM SOLVING: Requires the ability to establish and translate plans for the department that are consistent with goals and priorities. Must have ability to organize effectively and systematically. SAFETY: Requires the ability to monitor and model safe work habits. TEAMWORK: Requires the ability to communicate, support, and cooperate with others to achieve organization goals. Must be able work as part of the program management team in developing and implementing an appropriate vision for all programs. TECHNICAL EXPERTISE: Requires the experience with and ability to develop proficiency with a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Vehicle Utilization: Requires possession and maintenance of a valid Tennessee driver’s license. Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20-40 pounds).
