With multiple shutter speed of up to 1/4000th of a second, the Nikon D40x is able to freeze just about any action : sports, wildlife, children , even splashing of water! RECOMMENDED RETAIL PRICE S$1388 Nikon’s smallest DSLR combines a 10.2-megapixel CCD with a simple, intuitive operation designed to take great, high-resolution pictures for everyone. TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the D40x, a new digital SLR incorporating a 10.2-megapixel CCD. The D40x is scheduled to launch soon in the first quarter of 2007 and is a sister model to the D40, which has a 6.1-megapixel CCD. While maintaining the compact size and por tability of the D40 camera b o d y, t h e D 4 0 x produces even more outstanding, detailed pictures thanks to its 10.2-megapixel CCD and cutting-edge digital technologies. Its resolution power makes it easy for users to print up very large sizes or crop aggressively without losing any fine details. The D40x is loaded with everything you need for truly amazing images: a 10.2megapixel CCD, Nikon’s exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II, an improved Image Processing Engine and superb Auto White Balance. Together with a world-famous Nikkor lens, these features combine to ensure perfect exposure, refined details and natural, vivid colors. PG 04 The D40x shares the D 4 0 ’s e r g o n o m i c design and streamlined interface, which means the same intuitive o p e r a t i o n t h a t ’s simple and fun – even for entry-level users. The bright and clear viewfinder ensures precise composition, while the 2.5-inch large LCD monitor utilizes an easy-to-use menu system and a wide viewing angle so that everyone can navigate their settings and view their images with ease. There is also a handy built-in Help menu: simply press a button and useful information on key features is displayed on the LCD monitor. INSTANT STARTUP 0.18 SECOND The D40x is fast. Its near-instant power-up (0.18 second) and fast, reliable responses help photographers act on the moment. This m e a n s t h e r e ’s n o waiting around for the HIGH-SPEED CONTINUOUS SHOOTING (IMPROVED!) Timing is everything in photography, so why not increase your chances of capturing the right moment with high-speed continuous shooting? Just hold down the shutter release button in continuous mode and you can take up to 100 frames at as fast as 3 frames per second. Great for sports and action pictures, as well as portraits or other people shots, as facial expressions can change quickly. (2.5fps for D40) BROAD ISO SENSITIVITY RANGE (IMPROVED!) Your D40x has a wide range of ISO settings: from 100 to 1600, plus one step higher (HI 1). The result: faster shutter speed capability and beautiful images without a flash in many low-light situations, all free of blur from camera-shake or subject movement. (200 to 1600 plus HI-1 for the D40). LONGER LASTING BATTERY (IMPROVED!) Some of the D40x’s major improvements include an even longer-lasting battery that allows up to 520 images* per charge under CIPA testing. (470 images* for the D40) *under CIPA testing condition DIGITAL VARI-PROGRAM MODES Nikon’s scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes allow the photographer to concentrate on capturing nearly any type of scene without being distracted by camera settings. All eight modes – Auto, Auto (Flash Off), Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up and Night Portrait – are designed to produce remarkable results by automatically calculating the best settings and ISO-equivalent sensitivity for each scene. The new mode, Auto (Flash Off), prevents the Built-in Flash from popping up while boosting the ISO, thereby allowing the photographer to take pictures in museums, concerts, school plays, weddings and other low-light situations where flash photography is prohibited. For more advanced creative control, the D40 offers Programmed Auto, Shutter-Priority Auto, Aperture-Priority Auto and Manual modes. M U LT I - C A M 5 3 0 A F S E N S O R M O D U L E Sharp focus can make or break an action shot, so when it comes to a quick focusing system, the D40X has you covered. The key is Nikon’s exclusive threearea Multi-CAM 530 AF Sensor Module. Nikon’s class-leading technology is at the heart of the system, so you’ll get incredibly fast responses. The result: tack-sharp images, even when your subjects are moving or dimly lit. RETOUCH MENU Take advantage of the amazing in-camera image editing features built into the Retouch menu. The D40X makes it easy to crop, edit and enhance your images, all without the use of a computer. PG 05 FEATURED PRODUCT - D40x The Retouch menu includes R e d - e y e correction for correcting the red-eye effect caused by flash, Filter effects for changing an image’s color balance and Image overlay for creating a double-exposure out of two selected RAW images. Simply select an image, choose an effect and press OK, and your new image is created and saved additionally on the memory card, leaving the original image intact. WIDE VARIETY OF NIKKOR LENSES One of the most important advantages of using Nikon digital SLR cameras is the wide variety of interchangeable lenses available. The D40x is fully compatible with all AF-S/AF-I Nikkor lenses*, each providing the exceptional sharpness, image clarity, color reproduction, and fast, accurate autofocus performance that Nikkor is famous for. *Autofocus is supported only with AF-S and AF-I CPU lenses, which are equipped with an autofocus motor. ASSIST IMAGES The newly introduced “assist images” help you select the appropriate settings for many camera features by showing an example image typical of that setting. In this case, you may have to consider using a higher ISO and a bigger aperture to get you a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake. In this sixth part of a series of techniques, Steven Yee shall share with you the tips on how to make use of shadow to create interesting images. A travel photographer and photography instructor, Steven Yee conducts the Nikon D40/D40x, D70s and D80 workshop monthly at The Photographic Society of Singapore. More of his works can be found on www.stevenyeephotography.com and www.discovernikon.com The below shall serve as a useful guide to aid you in the search for shadow. The ingredients for shadow: ☛ The best time to get good natural shadow will be early morning or late evening on a sunny and non cloudy day. The quality of light and shadow is at its optimum during this period. ☛ Shadow is longer early in the morning or late in the afternoon. ☛ Shadow from artificial light will be great if the light source emits strong light. Sounds like common sense but spotting such opportunities is not easy even though it can be found everywhere. The Art of Seeing! ☛ The main subject must have distinct outlines so that the shadow will be obvious. Avoid group of subjects or else the shadow will just become one big black area with no distinct shape. THE FUNNIEST THING ABOUT SHADOW IS THE WAY HE LIKES TO GROW Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For he sometimes shoots up taller like a rubber ball, And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all. Stevenson, Robert Louis (1850–1894).  A Child’s Garden of Verses and Underwoods Shadow come and go in a fleeting moment. We encounter shadow everyday and everywhere. Sometimes it is very obvious, sometimes it is not. Sometimes it is long, sometimes it disappears. Most often, many people simply walk away without noticing how shadow can help create an interesting photograph. There are no special lenses needed to capture the shadow. The COOLPIX with its Program mode is able to do the job well. But of course, the Digital SLRs provide the photographers with more options to play with, such as the higher range of ISO and wider range of aperture. PG 34 With the above in mind, you can use this technique and tips in your quest to catch the lurking shadow. Center weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/180s, Aperture f3.8, D2X, 18-200mm DX lens While checking out at a hotel lobby in China, one of the hotel staff walked in and I immediately shot about ten pictures, out of which I can choose one or two. Every picture is different, such as the hand and legs movement. No harm shooting more, as opportunities do not repeat PG 35 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f3.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lens While walking towards the gate to board the plane, the strong light shines into the waiting area. I anticipated some good photo opportunities and took out my camera. The long shadow shows that the shot was taken very early in the morning. I waited for a minute for someone to walk past the chairs in the waiting area and I fired away. It worked well to have the person as a subject. It is good to have a camera all the time. Centre weighted metering, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f5.6, D70, 18-70mm I was in an alley in one of the villages in Lijiang, China. The architecture is interesting and the older people there wear traditional costumes. Opportunity came when the strong sunlight created the shadow of the roof on the wall. It formed an interesting graphic image with the lady as the subject. 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO125, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f4, D2X, 12-24mm lens The shadow reveals the shape of the windows of a domestic airport in Myanmar. Fortunately, a kid walked out and became my main subject. As usual, took a series of shots to choose from as he walked towards me. Centre Weighted metering, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f4, D2X, 18-70mm Upon touch down in Bagan, Myanmar, we made a dash for this shot to catch the early morning light. We were fortunate that we were not late and the shadow is relatively long. We cannot afford to wait for a candid subject to walk in as the shadow becomes shorter quickly as time flies. I asked my guide to ask the food seller near us to pose for us. PG 36 PG 37 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/640s, Aperture f4.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lens As it approached noon as shown in this picture, the shadow became very much shorter and the quality of light is not very good. The harsh lighting resulted in severe “hotspot” and the “glaring” floor is something which we should try to avoid. Details on the floor are lost. Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f8.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lens We were walking along a street in Pushkar, India in the late afternoon. The long shadows looked interesting and I shot this “group photo”. You can guess which shadow is mine. Third from left. PG 38 Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f9, D2X, 18-70mm While on a bus, we passed by a slip road and the noon sun created a shadow of the overhead bridge on the road. Graphically, it looks like two “Cs”. A bicyclist cycled past and I fired a few shots. PG 39 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f5.6, D70, 18-70mm The sun was setting. I was in front of a Tibetan house with the door closed. The sun created very good shadows of the tree branches on the white coloured wall. I asked my guide whom I requested to be in traditional Tibetan costume to be my model and it worked well. Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/3200s, Aperture f5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lens Two people or four people? The early morning light created the shadow of the two people on the wall as we walked up the slope of the Potala Palace, Tibet. Oxygen is very thin there and it was sure not an easy walk. Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f8.5, D2H, 18-70mm DX lens The shadow resulted in interesting shapes on the wall, and created something like a framing effect. The couple became my main subject. 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/5000s, Aperture f5.6, D2X, 18-70mm ED lens Why did the chicken cross the road? The bus was moving at high speed along an expressway when the mother hen walked onto the road with her charges. The bus has to do a jam break white I fired a few shots. PG 40 PG 41 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f4, D2X, 12-24mm DX lens I got tired of shooting the ancient ruins of an old city in Xinjiang. The setting sun emitted a very strong orange light which made the place looked so good. I spotted this angle where I can shoot my shadow. Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO1600, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1s, Aperture f2.8, D2X, 10.5mm DX lens After a sumptuous dinner, we waited for the bus to pick us up. The street was very dark and a car headlamp suddenly shone in our direction with the two men walking away from us. There was no time to setup a tripod. I set my ISO at 1600, use the wide angle fisheye and fired rapidly. I think I shot almost 8 shots handheld and somehow two or three appeared quite well with no camera shake, at 1s shutter speed. COMING UP NEXT... Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shall share with you on how to get great shots using backlighting. He shall talk about the appropriate subject matter, background and the execution of the technique. Look out for it. Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f5.3, D2X, 12-24mm DX lens Group photograph of myself and my students, we stood in a line in the midst of the setting sun. Since then, Gwen has tumbled down rabbita hole into the Wonderland of silver halides. Her curiosity to explore and to share her thoughts made photography the perfect medium in her life. In 2005, Gwen emerged into the light a full-time photographer. Social issues are WRIT LARGE in Gwen’s vocabulary as photography becomes her visual analogue of the proverbial soapbox harangue. Amongst her visual polemics delivered from that personal pulpit is “Spirits”, a series that slices the underbelly of Geylang sleaze to reveal a portrait study by turns both exuberantly transient and lingeringly nostalgic. Using old school method of transparency films and reversed processing, Geylang emerges in all her saturated blurred glory to underscore the ephemeral ethos of a nameless and faceless throng that haunt her. Her personal long term projects include the photo documentation of Singapore 70's through the exploration of second generation families holding to trades passed on by their parents. Being restless with an insatiable desire to explore, she traveled to Tibet three times, and is always contemplating where the next destination is. Commercially, she covers a range of photography genres from editorial, corporate, sports, reportage to travel. In 2005, she collaborated with three travel mates to showcase their travelogue of Tibet in her first group exhibition, Tibet: Through the Eyes of Four Travellers. In February 2006, Gwen held her first solo exhibition, Travel Light: Stories from Asia, which showcased 60 images taken during her Asia backpacking trips over the last six years, at the Orchard Library and Woodlands Regional Library. In July 2006, she exhibited in the Shooting Home 2005 Reunion exhibition organised by Objectifs. In early 2007, together with 2 other fellow photographers, her recent works on the Doha Asia Games were showcased at VivoCity, in an exhibition organised by Singapore Sports Council and Nikon Singapore. Gwen loves the variety of opportunities being a photographer provides. Aside from engaging in the process of photography, she also believes that photographers need to be savvy in marketing the art of photography, and to constantly communicate with viewers in order to reach a common ground. Gwen values individual expression in the creative field. She feels that it is crucial to strike a balance between commercial assignments and personal works so that the joy of photography will not burn out. In 2005, she decided to set up a photography collective known as The Meeting Point to share ideas among photographers. Today, The Meeting Point serves as a platform for photographers and potential clients to meet and bounce creative ideas off each other. For the love of the art, she hopes that there will be greater interaction among photographers in Singapore as well as in the region. Currently, Gwen is pursuing her Master of Arts in Arts & Cultural Management in LASALLE College of the Arts. • Singapore's rower Elsie Lim put up commendable performances in races despite windy condition at West Bay Lagoon, Doha.
