4. GENERAL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
4.1 INTRODUCTION H21 is a fully equipped multifunctional device for wireless internet access and personal scalable memory. H21 Owners will enjoy top speeds up to 7.2 Mbps downlink and 2.0 Mbps uplink (S/W upgradeable to 5.76 Mbps) and will have the freedom to roam globally on tri-band HSPA networks (850, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands). In areas where HSPA is not available, H21 is backwards compatible to UMTS, EDGE and GSM/GPRS network (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz). Diversity reception in the UMTS bands and two external antennas help to enhance the internet experience. Remarkably, it features a micro SD interface which opens additional possibilities for storing and securing personal data. Furthermore, H21 offers automatic software installation experience for both Microsoft Windows XP and Vista (Only) users (Mac OS has to be manually setup).
H21 USB modem combines innovative wireless technology with style and highly attractive design. It is ideal for home office or notebook computer use.

5.2 SOFTWARE CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS 5.2.1 Basic User Features The modem would give the user the ability to use the following bearer services: -
Internet surfing
-
Sending/Retrieving SMS
-
Creating/Modifying/Deleting SIM Phonebook contacts
-
Getting statistical information
5.2.1.1 Internet surfing This feature allow user to establish a connection to Internet. Connection type is either 3G HSPA, 3G, EDGE or GPRS type. Best available network is chosen by default but user will have possibility to choose a connection type when requested. In case there is no 3G HSPA, fallback is done on 3G. In case there is no 3G+/3G available, fallback is be done on EDGE, and if no EDGE, on GPRS. The PC Connection Manager is able to get the SIM characteristics (IMSI, etc.) in order to configure in advance the connection according to the current operator’s settings (APN etc…). PC Connection Manager shall then be able to request the device to connect to Internet with given settings. During the connection: •
Any SMS received by the key is stored and a notification is displayed to the user. PC Connection Manager will be notified if requested with unsolicited message on the Modem port.
•
User could be able to send SMS as he does when no connection is established in Windows based platform.
Page 17

Revision: A
Date: 18/08/2008
•
Users can neither using phonebook nor sending SMS when connection is established in MAC OS platform as phonebook and SMS are not supported in Mac OS.
Connection is finished in either case: •
user disconnects the key from PC
•
PC software sends disconnection commands to the key.
5.2.1.2 Sending/Retrieving SMS (Mac OS not Support) H21 allows user to do the following SMS actions: -
Send SMS to one or many users. SMS encodings supported shall be 7-bit, 8-bit and UCS2. The SMS could be sent after storage. In this procedure, PC first only stores the SMS, and at any later time, sends a stored SMS. Sent SMS shall be either not stored on the key, or stored automatically; depending on user’s choice (configuration choice shall be performed through the PC Connection Manager).
-
Retrieve SMS. PC is able to read SMS from H21 (received SMS is stored in SIM). After reading, a SMS is become “read” (change status).
-
Delete SMS. PC Connection Manager is able to delete any SMS from either SIM or device’s memory.
-
Store SMS. PC Connection Manager is able to store a SMS to SIM or device’s memory.
-
SMS status report (for example SMS acknowledgment): those SMS shall be supported and PC shall be able to retrieve them / delete them.
-
All SMS options shall be supported: class of message, multi-part messages; EMS and MMS are not required.

5.2.1.3 Creating/Modifying/Deleting SIM Phonebook (Mac OS not Support) PC has a dedicated command in order to retrieve the device’s capabilities: fields supported. length of each field. Creating a contact is possible from PC, and then storing the contact to the SIM. In case of SIM storage, only the SIM available sub-fields are supported (for example name and phone number, depending on SIM). PC application is able to organize the contacts in a dedicated order / position in the SIM.
5.2.1.4 Getting statistical information such as size of packet transferred H21 would store input / output bytes of DATA exchanged with network and let PC Connection Manager retrieve and reset those values at any time (connection counter). A global counter on the H21 could accumulate the bytes and would be reset only on PC’s request. The information needed are: •
1) For each connection (identified by starting/ending time), the packets size transferred in each Downlink and Uplink direction
•
2) The total size of packet transferred for all connections in Downlink and Uplink direction.
5.2.2 Performances H21 is able to reach following target regarding data transfer rate •
HSDPA Category 8 (7.2 Mbps)
•
HSUPA Category 5 for first release and Category 6 (5.76 Mbps) for later (end of 2008)
•
SIM access speed as specified in GSM Specification.
•
Micro SD Card access speed 30 Mb/s.
•
Simultaneous file data transfer over the network from network to SD CARD (Downlink) and the contrary from SD Card to network (Uplink) must not degrade in any case data transfer rate. Page 19

5.2.4 Auto run feature 5.2.4.1 General Description The following requirements are only applied to the Auto run Feature in Windows XP/Vista environment. It is not supported in MAC OS platform. 1. At each plug, USB Key enumerates only as a “CDROM Drive mode”, 2. Windows auto-runs by launching automatically the virtual CD that is shown by the key 3. Auto run program installs the right drivers and Connection Manager available in the CDROM and then after completion switches the key to “Standard mode” composite and launch automatically the Connection Manager. 4. At each next plug,
5.2.4.2
•
Key is in “CDROM Drive mode” but drivers and software are already installed.
•
Key is switched directly to “Standard mode” composite.
•
PC Connection Manager is automatically launched.
“CDROM Drive mode”
When the modem is plugged, the device is originally enumerated as “CDROM Drive”, other USB interface are off (not enumerated). This is the default mode.

5.2.6 Memory Storage 5.2.6.1 CDROM Drive Content TBD.
5.2.6.2 Device Memory Storage When in “Standard Mode”, the users have the ability to store his own information into the device. The total memory size is 85 MB, and the maximum required for user size is 64 MB. This user space area will be seen a new drive in the PC available for user storage for storing, retrieving or modifying information.
5.2.7 SD card storage SD card is seen as another drive available for the user. SD card will be seen as a new drive in the PC for user storage for storing, retrieving or modifying information. It should be possible for the user for moving information from SD card to Device Memory Storage in both directions and simultaneously.
5.2.8 Concurrency Use Case The following section deals with the concurrency aspects regarding the possibility to execute some use cases simultaneously. The following use cases are taken into account
