NIBE MEETS VITRE When NIBE wanted a partner to work on the lines and styling of the new Handöl 20 series of wood-burning stoves, they chose VITRE Industridesign. Designers Susanne Ek and Marie Christoffersson explain why: We were already familiar with the hallmarks of Handöl design and quality. That meant we were eager to accentuate the practical features and aesthetic values that have been embodied in the Handöl name for more than 40 years. But we wanted the result to have a contemporary feel. The most striking elements of our designs are the generously proportioned glass doors that bring a widescreen sensation to the stoves, and the large, practical handle. We believe these bold innovations will add a new dimension, both to the design of the stoves and to every home in which they are used.

CONVECTION SYSTEM Just minutes after the fire has been lit, warm air begins to flow from the convection system’s vents (see opposite page).
CAST-IRON DOOR To withstand the dramatic differences in temperature inside and out, the door on the Handöl 20 series is made of durable, rigid cast-iron. This helps to ensure a tight seal under all conditions.
WIDESCREEN The “widescreen” format of the generously proportioned “wrap-around” window ensures that you can enjoy the flickering fire wherever you are in the room – a unique feature of the Handöl 20 series.
PRACTICAL FEATURES The handle on Handöl 20 series stoves is elegant and practical. When the fire is first lit, the handle is set to the “start” position, feeding more air to the fire-box until the flames have taken hold.
OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES All Handöl 20 stoves can be equipped with an automatic fan. This speeds up the circulation and improves the spread of warm air. There is also a fitting behind the stove plinth that enables you to connect the stove to combustion air supplied from outdoors.
The heat control on the right-hand side of the stove (see inset above) gives you full control over the heat output. The fire-box includes a brand new type of grate and a handy ash-pan to make ash removal simpler and swifter.
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE HANDÖL 20 SERIES
TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS The new Handöl 20 series is a miracle of technology. Many long hours of testing, research and experimentation in the Handöl laboratory have resulted in a modern source of heat that more than meets contemporary criteria. Double convection channels through the fire-box make optimum use of the heat generated. And all Handöl 20 stoves can be fitted with a fan to spread the heat even more quickly.

The unique Handöl Clean Burning system has been further refined to achieve a combustion efficiency measured at no less than 80%.
RED ARROWS – CONVECTION CURRENTS Cool air from the room is sucked in via the base of the stove and heated as it passes through channels in the rear of the construction and the stove’s convection zones. It is then heated further by the hot fumes before flowing out into the room. The fan (optional extra) blows the air out through the vents.
BLUE ARROWS – PRIMARY COMBUSTION AIR A control on the side of the stove regulates the inflow of combustion air and, as a result, the intensity of the fire. The combustion air is heated to a very high temperature and then directed to flush clean the inside of the glass. Handöl stoves can also be connected directly to a supply of outside air.
GREEN ARROWS – CLEAN BURNING SYSTEM Closing the air intake activates the stove’s “clean burning system”. This supplies pre-heated combustion air via a system of channels and an air diffuser in the back of the stove. This ensures that the stove is never starved of oxygen, but always burns cleanly, efficiently – and for an extra long period of time.

1. RADIATED HEAT
1.
Once a fire is lit, the stove begins to radiate heat. This warms your body directly like the rays of the sun. However, the temperature in a room heated solely by radiation tends to be uneven. The air near to the stove is heated up, but further away the effect is less noticeable than that achieved by convection.
2.
3. CONVECTION + FAN A fan fitted to stoves from the Handöl 20 series produces even better convection. The warm air is circulated more widely in the room and the heat spreads more quickly.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEAT | NIBE STOVES
2. CONVECTION Stoves in the Handöl 20 series heat up the surrounding air both by radiation and convection. Air from the room is heated in convection channels inside the fire-box. This warm air is then released into the room, circulating in effective convection currents as shown in the illustration.

The Research & Development Department of NIBE Stoves is among the best in the industry, and environmental awareness is close to the heart of all who work there. For many years all our wood stoves have been environmentally certified. But our ambitions extend much further than that. That’s why we were the first in Sweden to have a number of our stoves “Pmarked” in accordance with criteria for enhanced quality and environmental certification drawn up by SP (the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute). Not only do our stoves meet criteria that are much more stringent than EU regulations for efficiency, safety and emissions, but operating instructions must also be comprehensive, well produced and easy to understand. P-marking also means that random tests and inspections are regularly carried out in our factories. All of which makes heating with Handöl stoves an environmentally friendly and economical alternative, using renewable resources.

HIGH TEMPERATURE – LOW HEAT OUTPUT Environmentally friendly combustion means maximising combustion efficiency inside the fire-box even when the heat output is as low as 3 kW. In many stoves, the temperature in the fire-box falls as you reduce the heating output. As a result, combustion is incomplete, increasing the levels of air-borne emissions. Our new technology ensures high temperatures and efficient combustion in the fire-box even when the stove releases only limited amounts of heat to the ambient environment. That’s why Handöl emissions are always low, regardless of how much heat the stove is required to produce.

LEADING THE WAY IN DEVELOPMENTS With more and more people choosing wood stoves to help heat their homes, the importance of clean emissions has never been greater. We are committed to a programme of continuous development to make our stoves better and more efficient. Thanks to our technical advances and the certification of our products, we are proud to be spearheading developments as Europe’s leading manufacturer of wood-burning stoves.

KEY DIMENSIONS AND FACTS Soapstone is a natural material with natural variations in shade. There may therefore be some differences between the shades and patterning shown in this brochure and those on the products on display at our dealers. IMPORTANT! Always observe the specified safety distances to combustible materials when the stove is used with a modular steel chimney. * To avoid the risk of discoloration on painted, non-combustible walls, we recommend the same gap at the sides as for combustible walls. ** When using the Handöl 20 series prefabricated floor-plate, note the different dimensions for the combustion air intake in the floor-plate and the stove body.
