GENERAL DESCRIPTION WHAT IS A DATAPORT? The CRU DataPort Removable Storage Module allows you to easily add or remove a 3.5" hard drive on your PC or MAC. It is also the perfect solution for protecting your valuable data. The DataPort carrier provides a simple and inexpensive way to transport data between computers, and is also useful for on-line back-up and storage of critical files. Sensitive information can be easily removed and secured. The DataPort was designed for use in hot-swap environments, making it ideal for RAID applications. The DataPort consists of a frame, carrier and top and bottom covers. The frame fits into any standard 5.25" half-height drive bay. DataPort models are available for Serial ATA, IDE and SCSI devices, and may be configured with either keylocks or latches. PACKAGE CONTENTS The CRU DataPort kit includes all of the necessary hardware to install a 3.5" hard drive in a 5.25" drive bay. Before installing, verify that the following items have been included in the package. Quantity 1 1 2 4 4 1 Description DataPort V “Plus” frame assembly DataPort V “Plus” carrier assembly Metal covers 6x32x0.3” pan head screws for frame mounting 6x32x0.3” pan head screws for hard drive mounting cover removal tool If any of the above items are missing, or you need special parts, contact your dealer or CRU-DataPort for instructions regarding replacement or service. You can order additional DataPort carriers or frames for multiple drive applications. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet. Before working on your computer, wait one minute for any residual energy to dissipate. SATA Data Connector Figure A Serial ATA Frame Back View Power PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION Note: To prevent data loss, read this manual thoroughly before installing or operating the DataPort. Before touching any electrical equipment, ground yourself by touching the metal part of your computer chassis. This discharges static electricity and prevents any damage to your computer’s ESD sensitive components. CRU-DataPort is not responsible for static discharge damages. 2. Remove the cover of the computer. 3. Locate a 5.25" drive bay with external access. Identify the 5.25" half-height bay in which you plan to mount the DataPort frame assembly. Study the bay to determine the location of mounting holes or whether mounting rails are necessary. Remove any filler plates that may be present. 4. Install mounting rails. If the drive bay requires mounting rails, install one on each side of the frame. The mounting rails should be provided with your computer system. TOOLS REQUIRED : Phillips screwdriver. Small flat screwdriver. Other items that will be needed are: 2 • Computer Users Manual • Serial ATA data cable Note: Cable requirement is 1 per drive • Serial ATA Host Bus Adapter or RAID Controller on Motherboard or adapter Note: Adapter Port requirement is 1 port per drive • Serial ATA Hard Drive WWW.CRU-DATAPORT.COM • (800) 260-9800 5. Mount the frame assembly. Insert the frame assembly into the 5.25" bay. Secure the frame assembly with the screws provided. 6. Connect the DC power cable to the frame. Locate an available 4-pin DC power cable from the computer power supply and plug it into the receptacle JP3 on the frame. WWW.CRU-DATAPORT.COM • (800) 260-9800 3 7. Connect the Serial ATA data cable to the data connector on the back of the frame. 8. LED Activation Connection (Optional) If applicable, connect an HDD activity indicator cable to header JP6 maintaining orientation as defined in the Operation Section of this manual. The frame installation is now complete. Follow the instructions below for carrier installation. 3. Attach the Temperature Control Cooling Sensor (TCCS) to the top of the hard drive with an adhesive strip. After the drive has been installed, replace the carrier top and bottom covers. 4. Insert the carrier into the frame assembly. Ensure that the key lock or latch of the DataPort is in the “open” (vertical) position. Position the carrier on the guide rails, then slide the carrier into the frame. Using thumb pressure, fully seat the carrier in the frame, then “lock” the unit with the key lock or the latch. 5. Replace the computer cover. Carefully recheck the installation procedure above to ensure that everything is in order. Replace the cover on the computer by reversing the sequence of steps that you used to remove it. Insert key or turn latch to power up. HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION 1. Remove the carrier top and bottom covers. The metal covers for the DataPort V Plus are snapped into place on the carrier without any screws. The supplied cover removal tool or a small flat head screw driver is handy for removing the covers. 2. Install the drive in the carrier. Place the drive in the carrier and connect the male connector on the hard drive to the female connector on the carrier. Use the provided screws to secure the hard drive into the frame. The drive should be positioned such that the data connector on the hard drive stays fully inserted into the data connector on the carrier. Note: The connectors’ parallel insertion is more important than ensuring that there is no gold finger exposure between the connectors as long as that exposure is minimized. You have finished the installation and your DataPort is ready to operate. OPERATION T URN ON THE POWER The keylock or latch on the CRU DataPort locks the carrier in place and also serves as an “ON/OFF” switch for the power.Turn the keylock or latch 90 degrees clockwise to the “ON” position before turning on the computer. When the computer is turned on, the “Power On” LED (green light emitting diode below the key on the frame assembly) is illuminated, and the system should operate normally. FAN FAILURE ALARM The fan failure alarm function is a standard feature on DataPort V Plus, VI and VII, and optional on Dataport V. If the cooling fan should fail, an alarm will beep and the LED on the lower right corner of the DataPort LED will flash indicating the fan failure. 4 WWW.CRU-DATAPORT.COM • (800) 260-9800 WWW.CRU-DATAPORT.COM • (800) 260-9800 5 IMPORTANT: READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE REMOVING THE DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED BY CARRIER. First check all of the cable connections. Ensure that the drive is securely mounted and the connectors are mated adequately. Also check that the carrier and frame are fully seated and none of the pins were bent during carrier insertion. REMOVE THE CARRIER Removing the DataPort carrier while the computer is operating is not recommended. If you need to remove the carrier while the computer is running, observe the following precautions: Wait until the drive activity light has stopped, indicating that no read/write activity is occurring. If your system uses a disk caching program, ensure that all the data has been written to the hard drive. Turn off the drive by turning the key to the “OFF” (vertical) position. The power LED will go off, indicating that the power has been cut. Wait 10 to 15 seconds for the drive to stop spinning, and then remove the cartridge. CRU is not liable for loss of data. It is the user’s responsibility to follow these important procedures to safeguard data. HARD DRIVE ACTIVITY LED The Serial ATA DPV “Plus” provides front panel Green LED indication for Power On to the HDD as well as a separate Red LED indicator. Currently, Serial ATA drives do not provide a HDD activity connector. However, some Serial ATA Host Bus Adapters or RAID controllers provide a HDD activity connection. In these cases, the DataPort HDD LED can be illuminated by an open collector driver connected to JP6 -1 (left most connector) on the Frame board, where pin 2 of JP6 is a ground reference. Refer to figure A on page 2. T ROUBLE SHOOTING NO POWER Make sure the carrier is completely seated in the frame, the keylock or latch of the DataPort is turned to the “ON” position and the green power LED is on. Check the 4-pin DC power connection on the back of the frame. 6 WWW.CRU-DATAPORT.COM • (800) 260-9800 COMPUTER FAN FAILURE For Fan Failure contact CRU technical support.
