The AssuredSAN™ family of storage systems from Dot Hill is storage for the channel that is built upon a long history of providing systems through leading OEM companies, who re brand the storage as their own. What may not be evident from those who hear the Dot Hill name is the fact that they have been in business, as an independent storage company for nearly thirty years. With over half a million systems installed and the engineering expertise to build a patent portfolio that is considered one of the more valuable in the industry, Dot Hill storage is designed and manufactured in the US, with a strong focus on delivering storage systems that are robust, reliable (5 nines) and provide leading performance for a variety of workloads and price points. The AssuredSAN™ family is a channel-only storage systems, and possesses industry leading innovations, including: SimulCache™, where the ability to minimize the system burden of mirroring system cache, which itself is important for data availability, Dot Hill has developed a method that removes much of the data handling involved, making a mirrored cache write about 92% as efficient as if it did not require mirroring. The use of EcoStor™ technology in the place of batteries to support the cache function improves the availability of the system, because there is no required down time to replace batteries, and no recurring cost for batteries. The following Storage Selector Guide is designed to give you a clear understanding of the configuration options, by system model; including the host interfaces, physical module count and drive configuration limits. The 3000 and 4000 Series of arrays are designed to serve in markets where the need for high performance IOP, and or throughput are required, with choices for host interfaces providing flexibility for integration into a number of environments. The Pro 5000 Series provides breakthrough capability in what is a rapidly emerging market segment; the ability to use high speed flash memory in a traditional storage environment, where performance is bound by the physical limitations of spinning disks, to accelerate the performance of applications, and even the entire storage environment. The 5000 uses thin provisioning, as well as automatic data tiering, in a package that simplifies the administration of the system, while ensuring that the benefits of hot data placement in flash is achieved. This guide does not include system software, or support options as an effort to provide the reader a clear understanding of the hardware configuration options available.

5000 Series The Dot Hill AssuredSan Pro 5000 requires you to look a little differently, the way that you order storage. These arrays are designed to provide a “tuned-approach” to a operational profile, such as IOPs performance, or capacity maximization, all while taking advantage of the AssuredSan Pro 5000’s built in auto tiering capabilities. These systems ship with set drive configurations, based on the operational profile required. These configurations have been determined by Dot Hill to provide the optimum performance in each operational profile, under a mix of work load types. As you scale the system, this approach is carried forward so that the balance between media types (SSD, high performance SAS and higher capacity SAS) is maintained. You begin with specifying the host interface type. The choices are:
8Gbps FC 10Gbps iSCSI
Second, you need to select a base system, while giving thought to the following: • How many storage tiers do you need? The options are two, or three tiers. • What operational profile do you need? • Two Tier - Read Cache - Emphasizes the need for very high IOPs, 2 SSD’s are included in the base system, and along with the Dot Hill RealTier™ Algorithm, ensure that the most requested data resides on the SSD’s, ensuring the greatest IOP’s performance. • Two Tier - Performance - This configuration includes a high performance SSD tier of storage. Subtle difference from the Read Cache because this approach recognizes the need to position a larger portion of the user data on an SSD tier, but the system also applies the same RealTier™ Algorithm to the entire data set, ensuring that data residing on spinning disk can be pulled forward to SSD, in the event that the application requires it. • Two Tier - Performance and Capacity - For use when the application data set that requires extreme performance is anticipated to live on SSD, with only infrequent use for data that has been off-loaded to slower 7200RPM spinning disk are required. Good for instances where data is used heavily, then as it ages, migrated to less expensive, high-capacity storage. • Three Tier - Performance - Similar as indicated above in the two-tier - performance option, but with the inclusion of the third tier or larger capacity, and less expensive spinning disk, the user now has a comprehensive HSM schema. • Three Tier - Performance and Capacity - Building out a schema where the customer is producing larger amounts of data that are anticipated to require longer storage time, with infrequent access, the ratio of higher capacity, lower cost spinning disk increased. The RealTier™ Algorithm still can manage the entire data set, ensuring that even data that has resided on the slower tier, can be accessed if needed.
5000 Series Third, what is the total capacity that you will require? After you have chosen the base system, you will have established a base capacity point, and resource ratio between performance and capacity. You can now build out this configuration with pre configured AssuredSan Pro 5000 expansion chassis. •
Trays are pre configured with either spinning disk, or a combination of SSD and spinning disk, and can be added in 2U trays. The AssuredSan Pro 5000 scales up to 240 drives, or ten chassis.
The choices are:
Performance - A mix of SSD and high performance spinning disk Performance - Capacity - Spinning, high-performance disk Capacity - Low Density - Spinning disk, higher capacity, lower cost Capacity - High Density - Spinning disk, maximum capacity per spindle, lowest price per GB
Finally, this is a solution for tiered storage, and the software support is an integral part of the solution. A 3 year support agreement for the RealStor™ software suite is required.
•
Dot Hill RealStor™ is included with the base system and includes the following capabilities:
RealTier™
Software feature that accelerates your data with real-time tiering. As data sets become hot, the algorithm, moves the most active block to the highest tier for the most responsive performance - in real time.
RealThin™
Software feature utilizing thin provisioning technology which enables IT managers to buy less physical storage now and add more drives when needed.
RealPool™
RealQuick™
Software feature that gives you greater peace of mind knowing that your data is secure. This solves the problem of long cycles to rebuild RAID sets in the event of a disk failure by intelligently restoring exactly the disk sectors that contain actual data. The result is much faster rebuild times and greater security for your data.
Software feature that lets you spend more time actually using your system and less time configuring and managing it. Specifically, there is no need to specify details related to RAID sets and low level configuration parameters.
