Technical Information TI 193C/07/en No. 51500279 Conductivity Measurement liquisys S CLM 223 / 253 Conductivity and Resistance Transmitter Liquisys S CLM 253 Benefits at a glance • Measuring transmitter in field or panel-mounted housing • Universal application – Conductivity and specific resistance via software switching – Transmitters for conductive or inductive measurement – Ultrapure water compensation acc. to IEC 746 (conductive only) • Simple handling – Logically arranged menu structure with plain text in 6 languages facilitates instrument configuration – Large, two-line display indicates measured value and temperature at the same time – Calibration via CAL key • Safe operation – Overvoltage (lightning) protection according to EN 61000-4-5 – Direct access for manual contact control – User-defined alarm configuration for alarm contact and error current The basic unit can be extended with: Liquisys S CLM 223 Due to the modularity of its design, the Liquisys S CLM 223 / 253 transmitter can be adapted to a wide range of customer needs. The basic version, which provides simple measuring and alarm signalling functions, can be equipped with additional software and hardware modules to match specific applications. Retrofitting of expansion modules is also possible. Areas of application • Ultrapure water • Water treatment • Ion exchangers • Reverse osmosis • Cooling water desalinisation • Sewage • 2 or 4 contacts for use as: – Limit contacts (also for temperature) – P(ID) controller – Timer for simple rinse processes – Complete cleaning with Chemoclean • Plus package: – Any current output configuration via table – Automatic initiation of cleaning in case of alarm or limit violation – Ultrapure water monitoring with pre-alarm acc. to USP 23 (conductive only) – Polarisation detection (conductive only) – Concentration measurement (% / TDS) – Temperature compensation via table – Live check of measuring cell • HART® or Profibus PA • 2nd current output for temperature Quality made by Endress+Hauser Endress + Hauser Nothing beats know-how ISO 9001 Liquisys S CLM 223 / 253 provides a solution for all drinking water processing, process water and sewage treatment applications. The CS / IS version provides additional functions: Features of the basic version (CD / ID): Measurement of conductivity or specific resistance This is selected via the menu. During measurement, the value measured can be displayed in the other measuring mode. The temperature is displayed at the same time if desired. 2.4 / 22 mA on off on off on off Different alarms are required depending on application and operator. Therefore the Liquisys S CLM 223 / 253 permits independent configuration of the alarm contact and error current for each individual error. Unnecessary or undesirable alarms can be suppressed in this manner. Timer Chemoclean on off on off on off t t Up to four contacts can be used as limit contacts (also for temperature), to implement a P(ID) controller or for cleaning functions. Direct manual operation of the contacts (bypassing the menu) provides quick access to limit, control or cleaning contacts, permitting speedy correction of deviations. Instrument DATA S erNr I1 1 3 56348 The serial numbers of the instrument and modules and the order code can be called up on the display. The cell constant can be edited and even calibrated for demanding special applications. 2 0 In order to display wide measuring ranges while still achieving a high resolution in certain ranges, the current output can be configured as required via a table. This permits bilinear or quasi-logarithmic curves, etc. Temperature compensation selections available are linear (α = 0 means no temperature compensation) or special ultrapure water compensation (NaCl curve) according to IEC 746. The reference temperature is 25 °C. E 017 E 123 ---- 20 mA Conductive or inductive Two instrument versions for measurement with conductive (two-electrode) measuring cells or inductive measuring cells are available. The use of inductive measuring cells that are less sensitive to soiling than conductive measuring cells is recommended for concentration measurement or adhering media. Inductive measuring cells must normally be installed in pipes at a required minimum distance from the pipe wall. If this minimum distance is not observed, the measured value changes. The builtin adaptive calibration feature can be used to compensate for this once the cell is installed. The sensor and process check system also indicates any polarisation of the conductive measuring cell. Since there is no subdivision into several measuring ranges (the full range from 0 ... 2000 mS/cm is available at all times), the measuring range is limited by the cell constant only. Polarisation detection then determines whether or not the working range determined by the measuring cell is exceeded. 20 mA Details 0 t The live check issues an alarm when the measuring cell signal does not change over a defined period of time. This may be caused by blocking, passivation, separation from the process, etc. USP 23 T µS/cm T µS/cm T 10 0.9 45 1.8 75 15 1.0 50 1.9 80 20 1.1 55 2.1 85 Ultrapure water monitoring according to USP 23 means that the uncompensated conductivity and the temperature are measured and compared to a table. The Liquisys S CLM 223 / 253 (conductive) comes with this function, and the user-adjustable pre-alarm indicates undesirable operating values in due time. Full compliance with USP 23 requires the use of a precisely calibrated measuring cell, for example, the CLS 15. The conversion from conductivity to concentration is effected using four user-definable concentration curves. This permits concentrations to be displayed directly in % or ppm, i.e. as TDS (total dissolved salts solids). In the case of the field instrument CLM 253, all wires (including the measuring cell cable) are connected to terminals in a separate wiring compartment. All the wiring can remain in place if the instrument needs repair because all possible repairs are limited to assembly replacement. So, dismantling the instrument and rewiring are no longer necessary.
