Introduction
The HDCD Process for CD and DVD Pacific Microsonics’ HDCD process is a conjugate recording and playback technology that maximizes the fidelity of all digital audio formats: Compact Disc, MiniDisc, DTS Surround, and DVD-audio and DVD-video soundtracks. This sophisticated system produces unparalleled sound quality because critical recording/playback filtering and conversion processes are precisely matched.

Not just for CD players. With these HDCD ICs, OEM manufacturers can easily add HDCD to CD players, Mini-component systems, DVD players, A/V receivers, MiniDisc players and recorders, and Automotive CD and DVD players. HDCD transforms any audio player into a high fidelity player because HDCD decoding produces true 20-bit dynamic range and resolution when decoding one of the over 2,000 HDCD encoded CDs, and the HDCD Precision Digital Filter improves the sound quality of all digital audio recordings. This means that any HDCD-equipped player will produce amazing sound from consumers’ entire collection of CDs, DVD videos, DTS Surround, and MiniDiscs.

All HDCD ICs provide three major benefits:

HDCD Precision Filtering. For HDCD software, HDCD Precision Filtering is complementary to the HDCD record filters used by the HDCD Encoder. This conjugate filtering system reduces both alias distortions and time smear, producing extremely accurate vocal and instrumental timbre, detailed resolution and transient response. For non-HDCD software, HDCD Precision Filtering improves the accuracy of D/A conversion, producing a sound which is more open, natural and less harsh.

HDCD Identification. All HDCD ICs provide a signal for implementing an HDCD front panel indicator light to indicate when conjugate HDCD decoding and filtering is being applied to HDCD software.

HDCD Decoding. Decodes extended dynamic range information on HDCD encoded Compact Discs producing true 20-bit dynamic range and resolution from the 16-bit CD format.

A/V Receivers, Automotive Surround HDCD transforms an A/V receiver or Automotive Surround product into a high fidelity HDCD D/A converter. Adding HDCD allows consumers to upgrade their CD player to HDCD without having to buy a new CD player! No additional ICs are needed since HDCD Decoding and HDCD Precision Filtering are integrated on the audio DSP IC and Burr-Brown HDCD DAC. In design option 2, HDCD Precision Filtering is used to also improve the fidelity of DVD-video soundtracks. Design option 1

MiniDisc Recorders and Players MiniDisc recordings made from an HDCD encoded CD source sound amazing. Decoding HDCD encoded CDs produces an input source for ATRAC encoding with much more resolution and dynamic range than a conventional 16-bit CD because HDCD encoded CDs contain 20-bits of resolution and dynamic range. For playback, HDCD precision digital filtering improves the fidelity of all MiniDisc recordings.
