HDMI switches for digital consumer applications High bandwidth 2-to-1 HDMI switches The NEATSwitchTM family portfolio has been recently expanded with the introduction of the 2-to-1 HDMI passive switches STHDMI001A and STHDMI002A. These devices are high-bandwidth differential digital video switches able to support the industry proven Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and the latest High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard for digital consumer products. The STHDMI002A integrates switches for HDMI control and status lines (DDC, HPD) eliminating the use of discrete analog switches and level shifters. On the other hand, Digital Visual Interface (DVI) carries video data only. These interfaces are used to transmit digital television audio-video signals from DVD recorders, set-top boxes and other sources to video displays such as LCDs, PDPs or projectors. With multiple video sources targeting one display, multiplexing capability is desired at the receiver and de-multiplexing capability at the source end. Both STHDMI001A/002A operate with a single 3.3V power supply and support a maximum HDMI signal switching of 1.65Gbps with extremely low crosstalk (-31dB at 825MHz), minimizing the video signal distortion at the output. Their low off-isolation (-30dB at 825MHz) results in high quality video signal reproduction at the output. ST’s HDMI switches have been tested and proven to support DVI/HDMI Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) signal switching. In order to perform an efficient HDMI/DVI switching, STMicroelectronics has developed two passive switches, STHDMI001A and STHDMI002A. They feature 2-to-1 high-bandwidth signal switch with two sets of 4 differential pairs of channels (3 for data and 1 for clock) at the input and one set of 4 differential channels at the output. Other benefits include high video resolution (1080p=1920 x 1080) support, thanks to the high bandwidth achieved by a careful selection of on-resistance and on-capacitance of the switch. The combination of high bandwidth, low crosstalk and low off-isolation provides a simple, inexpensive switching solution to replace 2 HDMI/DVI receivers without corrupting the high quality video signals. In general, they are used to route video signals from multiple input sources in TVs to a single HDMI/DVI receiver. The STHDMI002A includes switches, a level translator function for Display Data Channel (DDC) and Hot Plug Detect (HPD) signals of the HDMI interface. The switches are controlled by a single logic signal. A logic LOW enables the switch to pass the HDMI/DVI signals from port A to the output, while logic HIGH enables the switch to pass the signals from port B to the output. STHDMI001A is available in the TSSOP48 package and STHDMI002A in the TQFP48 package. With the 0.5mm pitch, both packages allow easy PCB routing on a single-layer or double-layer Class2 or Class3 type PCB. The switches are available in lead-free packages and are backward-compatible with leaded manufacturing processes.
