Heil HM-5 Dynamic Microphone Heil HM-5 Dynamic Microphone Content provided by: Jerry, KD6ET I'm using a Heil HM-5 But, the settings of PowerSDR are just as important. I'm using the following: • Band Pass: 150-3500 Hz • Audio Buffer: 512, Sample rate=4800Hz • Equalizer: Preamp= 2, Low= 14, Mid=-1, High= 14 • TX Mic Setting: EQ On Reviewer's Note: EQ settings are unique dependent on many different variables and parameters. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. It is always best to listen to your own audio on a separate receiver and start with a flat EQ and adjust from there to get the most natural sound possible. I speak softly and keep the TX meter well below '0'. I used a standard patch cord 3 feet long with 1/4" connector. It's plugged directly into the Delta 44 breakout box Input #3. I do NOT use the Mic boost in the audio tab. To reduce pick-up from a noise source in the room, note the position of the name 'Heil' on the handle. Orientate the microphone so that the name points away from the noise source. To reduce pops and other unwanted noises when speaking, speak with the mic pointed directly at your mouth. This position will cause you to speak across the cartridge and not directly into it. See the picture below for cartridge position. I repeatedly get unsolicited "Great Audio" comments and whomever I call always responds. Heil HM-5 Dynamic Microphone The HM-5 "Handi Mic" is a 4" long dynamic microphone that incorporates the HC-5 full range communications element. The mic has a 4-pin XLR connector for signal and PTT. Heil designed a very special open sorbothane shock mount that puts the various Heil microphone elements in the open, not encased in a shell. This results in the cleanest, clearest and most articulate hand microphone - EVER ! The low handling noise and exceptional cardioid pattern makes the Handi Mic ideal for mobile or portable use. The cost of the mic is ~$80 USD. Features of the HC-5 "The Key Element" (Blue Label) • The HC-5 is the microphone cartridge for everyday Rag Chewing. • Engineered with a frequency response designed for a fuller range of articulate voice clarity. Not mush, bassy, paging type audio, but clear, easy to understand SSB audio • This element actually places a 6dB rise at 2,000 Hz (a frequency the human ear is highly responsive to). HC-5 Specifications: • Type: - Dynamic. Copper wound bobbin, moving coil transducer • Frequency: 300 Hz to 8,000 Hz with 6 dB rise at 2,000 Hz. • Sensitivity: -68 dB Nominal • Impedance: 2,000 ohms @ 1,000 Hz. • Size: .530 x .850 x .310 Heil HM-5 Dynamic Microphone This KB article may reference additional files that are available on the FlexRadio Systems web site Downloads page.
