FAQs Before you start EBL requires Acrobat Reader version 7 or later. EBL works best with Acrobat Reader version 9 or later. Adobe Digital Edition Adobe Digital Edition is required to read downloaded eBooks – this is available for free download from the EBL home page. This function is only available on personal computers and laptops. Books are unable to be downloaded to the Library computers but able to be read and printed from on these computers. See How do I download EBL ebooks to my computer or PDA? below for further information Printing You can print up to 20% of the pages of any ebook that you have loaned. You can copy/paste an additional 5% of the pages of any ebook. Your copying and printing allowances for the current ebook are shown on the reader toolbar. You can choose to print the current page, a range of pages, or selected chapters.
How do I find EBL ebooks? There are 2 ways to access EBL titles 1. Directly from the library catalog - https://ipac.lib.utas.edu.au/ - search the library catalogue and link through to the individual titles. 2. Access directly on the EBL site https://ezproxy.utas.edu.au/login?url=http://www.utas.eblib.com.au/EBLWeb/p atron/.
* Please note: EBL titles are not available through the ‘catalogue only’ (OPAC) computers in the library.
Once in the site you can search for a title using one of the various search options eg. Quick Search or Category
What next? UTAS has 2 methods of accessing EBL ebooks. Some titles have been purchased and are available for immediate access and download, others are available to browse and then recommend for purchase. If you have done a search on the EBL site and have a list of results an indicates full access is available and a indicates that titles can be recommended for purchase. If you have linked directly to a title via the
Library catalogue it may not be obvious whether a title is owned or can be requested for purchase until you are on the EBL site. The E-book options box on the left of the screen will tell you whether UTAS owns a book. If UTAS owns the book and has full access you will see the following options. (See: Reading the eBooks)
If UTAS does not own the book then you will see the following options.
Titles that aren’t owned can be browsed for 5 minutes and then can be recommended for
purchase. After the 5 minute browse time you will be presented with the following message.
If you would like to recommend a title for purchase click on Yes (place a request) and fill in the required information. Alternatively, you can recommend a title for purchase by selecting the Request a Loan button in the E-book options box. All requests will be considered by library staff and you will be advised of our decision within 48 hours.
Reading the eBooks (UTAS owned titles) When you have found a title you have 2 options
1.
Read Online – This option allows you to browse the title for 10 minutes. It does not allow you to print or copy any part of the ebook, or create notes in the ebook. After 10 minutes, a pop-up message will ask whether you would like to continue reading the ebook – click Yes (create a loan). If you want to print, you will also be prompted to make a loan. Once loaned, you have 24 hour access from any location. You can always loan the book again, once the loan period expires.
2.
Download - If you chose to download the ebook, you will be asked to specify a period of time for your download – 1 or 3 days. Choose whichever fits with how long you think you’ll need to access the book – you can always download the title again if your loan period expires. Please read How do I download EBL ebooks to my computer or PDA? for important information regarding downloading.
How do I navigate when reading online? o o o o
EBL ebooks load one page at a time in the online Reader screen. Click the “Contents” tab on the left side of the screen to select and view any chapter to browse. Use the toolbar along the top of your screen to access the EBL page forward/back, page sizing, printing, and copying tools. You can navigate between pages using the toolbar’s advance and reverse arrows; can enter the page number you would like to go to and click ‘go’; or can navigate by chapter headings to the left of the Reader screen.
Tip: You can use the “Notes” tab in the left-hand frame to add your own notes and save them for future visits, export them in a .txt file, or print them along with the page. o o
Select the “Search” tab at left to full-text search within any ebook. If you would like to return to a previous search result, the breadcrumb trail appearing in the upper-left hand side of the page shows your prior steps. Click here to return to an earlier result.

EBL requires Acrobat Reader version 7 or later and Adobe digital edition. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/#download if you do not have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Once Adobe Digital Editions is installed, simply click on the “Details” tab at left and then “Click here to Download”. Note: ebooks will remain on your computer or PDA after the loan period has expired but will have become inactive. In order to ‘renew’ an ebook you’ve previously downloaded, you may have to first delete the ebook from your Adobe Reader “My Digital Editions” folder on your C: drive before downloading the ebook a second time (if you are using version 7 or older). Ebooks cannot be downloaded onto a USB or memory stick.
