Ingrid Vang Nyman, 1916–1959, the Danish artist moved to Sweden in the © Vejenkunstmuseum.dk 1940’s. She was the first illustrator to work with Astrid Lindgren. She was strong in her belief that also children were to be offered pictures of high artistic quality and substance. Ingrid Vang Nyman is the original illustrator of Pippi Longstocking. He decided to become an artist at an early age, and after art studies in Sweden went to Paris to study for Fernand Legér and André Lhote. His association with Astrid Lindgren began when Astrid saw one of his drawings and thought that the boy in the picture looked like an Emil. She studied to become an illustrator at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In the late 1980’s Marit Törnqvist was commissioned to illustrate herfirst picture book by Astrid Lindgren. Marit Törnqvist is the designer of the set for Astrid Lindgren’s “Story Train” and the Villa Villekulla room at Junibacken children’s museum in Stockholm. She renewed children’s literature and combined artistic integrity with commitment to the rights of children and young people. Astrid Lindgren once said that she always wrote for her inner child. By doing that, she reached out to the whole world and her stories will live forever. The Swedish government has founded an international prize in her name, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
