Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of The Wildlife Trusts. If you care about nature and the environment and want to explore your local wildlife – Heysham Hedgehog’s club is for YOU! Sessions run all year (apart from August) where volunteer leaders and helpers run wildlife sessions for children aged between 8-13. Now in its fourth year, Connecting to Nature is a project sponsored by EDF Energy which aims to engage the local community with Heysham Nature Reserve. It continues to offer more opportunities for the local community to enjoy the outdoors and discover some of the amazing wildlife that Morecambe Bay and Heysham Nature Reserve are home to. Whether you want to take a stroll around the Reserve, come along to our wildlife events or learn a new skill, we hope you will find something to enjoy. You can also explore electricity at the Heysham Visitor Centre.

If you would like to learn more about your local herbs, why not come along to the Heysham Nature Reserve to join Veda West a local Medical Herbalist to see, feel, smell and touch the plants. She will help you understand the history, medicinal properties and healing powers of the various herbs on site. Please note the ground is uneven and we will be walking approx 1 mile.

• LOCATION: Please see map at the back for locations of Heysham Nature Reserve & Heysham Power Station’s Visitor Centre. • NATURE TUESDAYS: Joint family events run by Lancashire Wildlife Trust & Heysham Power Station’s Visitor Centre. • BOOKING: When booking an event, we will ask for contact details to inform you of any changes that may occur and we advise that you ring before planning to come along to any events. • RESTRICTIONS: Children should be accompanied by an adult at all events. • DOGS: There is a No Dogs Policy (except registered assistance dogs) within the main area of the Nature Reserve. • DISABLED ACCESS: We regret disabled access is limited in the Nature Reserve as paths can be uneven and steep.

Money Close
The Reserve runs down to the edge of Morecambe Bay at Red Nab. The Bay is internationally important feeding ground for wintering wildfowl and waders. Flocks of curlew, knot, oystercatchers and redshank can be seen feeding or roosting during the winter months. The inland northern end of the Reserve is designated as a Biological Heritage Site (BHS). In spring and summer the grasslands are carpeted with wildflowers from early cowslips to bee and commons spotted orchid. Twenty species of butterfly are regularly recorded here, including small skipper, small copper and common blue.

Why not join us for our open day here at the Reserve. We have a variety of activities to get involved in and explore by taking part in guided and self-led trails, or explore our woodland area to use craft tools to create something woody. Sit down for refreshments whilst the younger children get involved in crafts or be creative and use natural materials to develop art.

Heysham Nature Reserve’s Bioblitz Join staff and volunteers at your local Reserve for the weekend to find as many species of birds, mini beasts and plants. Help to explore with our team of local experts to find and identify as many species before the weekend is over. You will find the route on page 10. From the M6 Jc 34, follow the A683 towards Heysham and Heysham Port. Once at the traffic lights on Rothesay Road (see map), turn LEFT onto Money Close Lane, the Nature Reserve is 200m on the right.
