Baluns are the ideal solution to this problem as they allow two systems of different characteristic impedance to each see their ideal load and source impedance. This avoids losses caused by mismatch and allows full coupling of the transmitted energy from one part of the system to the next. A common transmission impedance matching problem is interfacing systems with a 75: impedance (typical of many coaxial cables) to systems with a 120: impedance (as in many twisted pair cables). There are many other impedances used in transmission systems. Many modern transmission systems are designed with twisted pair interfaces as they offer higher density interfaces, smaller cable sizes and lower cable costs. The incompatibility with older established 75: systems is overcome with Baluns allowing equipment with different interfaces to co-exist without penalty. AC&E is a company that specializes in connectivity and interface solutions. We design and produce a wide range of Baluns that support transmissions from DC to 1GHz in a variety of connectivity standards and physical configurations that are intended for many different applications. In addition AC&E manufacture baluns in six main housing styles with a wide variety of coaxial and twisted pair interfaces. Coaxial connector types supported include BNC, 1.6/5.6, BT43, 1.0/2.3, APT1000, SMB, PAL, F and BPO10 connectors in male (m), female (f) and a variety attachment styles. Twisted pair terminations include Krone IDC, AC&E’s clamp IDC, Screw Terminal, Wire Wrap, Pin Header, Telco, D Connectors and RJ45’s. Reliable long life connections with impedance matching is our business. Our connectivity and interface solution guarantees your signal integrity. This document lists the range of AC&E’s catalogue Balun products and is intended as a selection guide. Its contents are subject to change without notice. Our design team is well experienced in quickly producing products to solve a special connectivity and interface problem. Balun Housing The most common housings for AC&E’s Catalogue Balun products are:x The Standard Balun which is intended for panel mounting and comes with a variety coaxial interfaces and has an industry standard Krone IDC for twisted pair connection. This product is used to house Baluns for use in the 0 – 50Mhz signal range. x The Mini Balun, a fully shielded product which is intended for either panel or cable mounting, comes with a variety coaxial interfaces and AC&E’s Clamp IDC for twisted pair termination. This product houses Baluns for use in the 0 – 250Mhz signal range. x The PCB Balun which is intended for use by equipment makers who need a PCB mounting 75: coaxial interface on their system. The benefit of this solution is that it incorporates impedance transformation and isolation within the same connector footprint. x The Broadband Balun is a product whose packaging is optimized for use in impedance matching 50 – 1,000MHz signals for CATV networks. B13603010 B04002060 Page 4 www.acande.com x x Dual Baluns. These products provide transformation of a 75: coaxial Tx/Rx pair to two 120: twisted pair outputs on a single RJ45 socket. The product is primarily aimed at interfacing T1/E1 to T3/E3 transmissions. M1300921R2 Balun Panels. These products house multiple Standard or Mini Baluns for users who require a high density of Baluns. The convenience and cost saving of a 19” or similar instrument rack in large and professional systems makes these products a popular choice. Telecommunications Applications AC&E’s range of Baluns for telecommunications supports data speeds up to 155Mbit/s and meets or exceeds all the parameters of the ITU–G.703 specifications. These Baluns comprise of three Catalogue types:x x 2–8Mbit/s speed version (for E1/T1 and E2/T2 data streams) 2–8–34Mbit/s speed version (for E1/T1 to E3 data streams) x 34 to 155Mbit/s, high speed version (for E3 and higher data streams) Conversion from coax to twisted pair cables enables the use of high density IDC (insulation displacement connection) modules to be used for distribution frames, increasing the wiring density by more than 5 times, effectively reducing the space requirement to 1/5 or less. This creates space within the exchange for the installation of additional lines and facilities. Australia’s major telecommunication carrier has accomplished the conversion of all their 2 and 8Mbit/s Digital Distribution Frames (DDF) from coaxial to twisted pair cabling using Baluns supplied by AC&E. This has achieved substantial multi-million dollar savings. It is our understanding that this carrier wishes to convert all their coaxial system within their exchanges to run on twisted pair cables for data rates covering 34, 45, 140 and 155Mbit/s, and AC&E is providing the necessary components for them to do so. AC&E is well acquainted with the technology to help any other telecommunications organisation considering the advantages of such an exercise. The maximum distances for twisted pair cables used in conjunction with the Baluns will depend on the grade of cables being used and the number of twists per unit length. Typical distances on good quality cables will be 300 metres and 160 metres respectively for 2Mbit/s and 8Mbit/s using the existing Baluns and 60 metres for 155Mbit/s with the new high speed Baluns. Benefits in Converting DDF from Coax to Twisted Pair 1. The space occupied by the DDF is reduced to one fifth, or less 2. Enables expansion without new buildings, ducting or additional space. 3. Use of smaller, low cost twisted pair cables enables easier cable routing and management. 4. Quick and easy termination of twisted pair wires saves material and labour cost. 5. High reliability of gas tight IDC contacts. 6. Full solution for migrating from old technology to new 120: structure. www.acande.com page 5 Generic Single Balun Part Numbering AC&E single Baluns identified in this catalogue conform to the part numbering standard identified on this page. Dis-assemble the rear end components from the mini-balun. 2. Fit the nut and outer cover onto the cable in that order. 3. Strip the cable jacket to ‘B’ from the end of the cable. Cut the drain wire and foil ‘A’ from the end of the cable. 4. Flare the foil and fold it and the drain wire back over the sheath. Fit the grounding ring over the end of the cable. 5. Insert the wires into the holes in the small end of the stuffer cap marked ’A‘ and ’B‘. 6. The ’A‘ connection corresponds with the polarity of the centre conductor of the coax. Push the stuffer cap hard against the washer. Spread the conductors apart towards the sides of the stuffer cap and fit the conductor ends into the slot in each side of the stuffer cap. 7. Ensure that the end of each conductor is positioned behind the lip and into the cavity at the end of the slot, as per illustration. 8. Fold the foil and the drain wire back over the outside of the stuffer cap. Ensure the drain wire ends within the tapered section of stuffer cap. 9. Orient the tongue on the mini-balun to line up with the flat on the stuffer cap and insert the stuffer cap onto the IDC terminals. Ensure that the wires are correctly positioned in the slots (Refer to 7 above). 10. Pull the rear outer body forward and align the flat to the tongue in the Mini-Balun body. Secure the retaining nut finger tight. Lightly tighten using the spanners recommended. www.acande.com page 15 B A Dual Balun This module contains 2 Coaxial Connectors, 2 Baluns and 1 RJ45 socket housed in an insulated enclosure.
