It is VarTech Systems' experience that a luminance greater than100 footLamberts (343 nits) is required for daylight applications, and a luminance greater than 200 footLamberts (686 nits) is required for sunlight readable applications. It should be noted that the contrast ratio of the panel and the reflectance of the viewing surface also play significant roles in determining a display's luminance requirement in high ambient lighting conditions. This is accomplished by: (1) Recycling what would be wasted off axis light and then redirecting light towards the viewer; (2) Reflecting and recycling polarized light which under normal circumstances 50% of the backlight output would have been absorbed into the LCD and subsequently wasted; and (3) Finally, the use of a mirror-like optical enhancement film coupled with a cavity reflector ultimately yields a brighter more efficient display.
