Nero 8 Data backup to CD’s or DVD’s First open Nero Burning Rom by going to Start > Programs > CD/DVD Burning > Nero 8 > then select Nero Burning Rom. After it opens it will look like this when you start a new project. If you are attempting to burn a DVD or CD use the drop down menu(1) in the top right to select the proper format before continuing. After you have choosen the format you want to use click “New”(2) at the bottom of the window. (1) (2) After selecting “New” your window will then look like this. There are a couple of things that can be done at this point. One is to change the Name of the disc. As you can see below I have renamed the Disc. You can enter whatever you want here. If you are creating a backup CD/DVD I recommend using the format of Backup and the date or the name of what you are backing up and the date. Ex. Backup 04/18/2007 To rename the disc right click on the CD and select “Rename” in the menu shown below. Before going much further let’s explain the entire window that you see. There are four different columns and 2 different sides to the window. • Left Side (New CD/DVD Image): Is where the New CD or DVD Image is created. o Panel 1: Is where you will see the process tree of what will be on the CD or DVD. o Panel 2: Shows you everything in each of the folders that will be created on the CD or DVD. • Right Side (Browser): This is the browser side. This where you can browse your computer and find what is physically located on your machine. o Panel 3: Here is where you can select the “Desktop” or the “My Documents” folder or any other folder to see the contents of each folder in column 4. o Panel 4: This is where all the content of each folder can be viewed. You can also select whole folders or individual files from either Panel 3 or 4 and drag them to the “Left Side” to add them to the current project you are working on. In addition to the “Documents” folder I wan to add the My Pictures folder as well. However after adding the My Pictures folder, if you take notice at the bottom, you will notice that bar shows a lot of red. That means that based on the selected media (CD or DVD) that you have exceeded the capacity of the disc. I removed the “My Pictures” folder and it shows I have plenty of space for the Documents folder I want to backup. Since the “My Pictures” folder is too big I will have to use a DVD and split the content between 2 discs. Now you are ready to start the Burn process. Select the “Burn” button highlighted in the image below. After Clicking on the button, the following window will appear. As you’ll notice there are several tabs across the top. Within each tab there are different settings that can be changed, however for our purposes we will stick with the default settings. There however are a couple settings you can change. The first is the number of copies you wish to make. You have the ability to make multiple copies of the same project without going through all the steps again. Simple change the number; when each copy is done it will tell you to insert a new disc till it has made all the copies you wanted. The other setting you will want to change is the “Write Speed” this determines how fast the process takes. We recommend using 16x depending on how fast your burner can go. Once you are ready simply click the Burn button and you will be taken to the next window. The next thing you will see during the burn process after you click the burn button is this screen. If you have not inserted any blank discs, Nero will prompt you to insert one now before continuing the burn process. If one is already in the drive, you will see burn process start automatically. You have now completed the entire process of creating a CD or DVD backup of your critical documents.
