How to Borrow eBooks On Your Nook Color or Nook Tablet What you will need before starting: Wi-Fi connection Westlake Porter Public Library Card number (located on the back of your card, starts with PPPL, a total of 14 characters; card should be in good standing) an email account if you haven’t already registered your Nook: a Barnes and Noble account (which will require you to provide them with credit card information in order to download apps, including free ones)

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS STEP ONE: How to connect to a WIi-Fi Network Turn on your Nook Unlock your Nook by sliding the Unlock icon to the right Tap the “n” (Nook Button) on the bottom of your Nook The Quick Nav Bar will appear Tap Settings Tap Wireless under Device Settings A list of nearby wireless networks will show up. Choose your wireless network (Fig. 1) A message box will open. Tap Connect (Fig. 2) Once your Nook is connected, tap the “n” (Nook Button) then tap Home. The Wi-Fi icon on the Status Bar at the bottom of your Nook indicates the strength of your Wi-Fi connection. The more concentric curves there are, the stronger the connection. Fig. 1

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS STEP TWO: How to get the Overdrive App

Tap the “n” (Nook Button) Tap Apps on the Quick Nav Bar Tap Shop Now Tap the Search Box at the bottom of the screen. The keyboard will appear. Type Overdrive Media Console then tap Search A new page will open listing the Overdrive App Tap Free (Fig. 1). Another page will open Tap Free Tap Confirm. You may be prompted to enter your B&N password Overdrive Media Console will start downloading (a green progress bar will appear below the Overdrive logo) (Fig. 2) When download is done, tap the “n” (Nook Button) The app should appear on the bottom left corner of the screen (Fig. 3) You can move this app to the main page by placing your finger on the app and dragging it to your home page. Doing this would make your app easily accessible. Fig. 2

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS STEP THREE: How to Authorize your Nook For those WITHOUT an Adobe ID, go to STEP 3A For those WITH an Adobe ID, go to STEP 3B STEP 3A
From your Home Page, tap the Overdrive Media Console App You will prompted to Sign In or Register at Adobe.com Tap Register if you do not have an Adobe ID yet. A new page to create an Adobe ID will open. Fill out the appropriate fields. Uncheck the “Keep me informed” box if you do not like to receive notifications by Adobe. Tap Create Tap Never or Not Now if you don’t want your browser to remember your password. Otherwise, tap Remember. A “Welcome to Adobe Digital Editions” page will open once your Adobe ID is created. Tap the “n” (Nook Button) Tap Home Tap the Overdrive App Tap the menu Icon with the three stacked lines on the Status Bar at the bottom of the screen An options bar will appear. Tap App Settings. Enter your newly created Adobe ID and password Tap Authorize You’ve authorized your device successfully when you see the word Deauthorize below your Adobe ID Tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines on the Status Bar to access the Option Bar Tap Bookshelf

From your Home Page, tap the Overdrive Media Console App Tap Sign In enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password Tap Authorize At the bottom of your screen, on the Status Bar, tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines An option bar will appear. Tap Bookshelf.
CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP A: How to add a Library on the Overdrive App From your Home page, tap the Overdrive App A box will open with information about the Overdrive app. Tap Close, located at the bottom of the page. The app then opens to your Bookshelf. The word Bookshelf should be at the top of the page. Below that would be “Welcome to Overdrive Media Console,” an audiobook on how to use the Overdrive app). The Bookshelf is where your Adobe EPUB ebooks and MP3 audiobooks will be downloaded to. Tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines on the Status Bar A box of options will appear Tap Get Books A new page will open. Tap “Add a Library” at the bottom of the page Tap the Search Box. The keyboard will appear. Type in our Zip Code then tap Search (Fig. 1) Tap “Westlake Porter Public Library” (Fig. 2) Tap the Star right next to “Westlake Porter Digital Media” (this bookmarks our library) (Fig. 3) Then tap the words “Westlake Porter Digital Media” to go to our digital page Fig. 1

CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP B: How to Browse/Search for eBooks If you know the title or author of the book you are looking for, tap “Search.” Type in the title/author and click “Go” If you’d like to browse, you can do it two ways BROAD SEARCH: this will list all the Adobe ePUB ebook titles we own (this includes titles that are checked out and titles that are available to borrow right now) 1. Tap Browse 2. Tap Browse all Adobe EPUB eBook Titles 3. Titles are sorted according to the Date they were Added to the library’s collection. Tap the drop down menu next to “Sort by” to sort the titles by Relevancy, Title, Author, Release Date, Added to Site FOCUSED SEARCH: this will list Adobe ePUB eBook Titles available for you to borrow right now 1. Tap Search 2. Click on Advanced on the right hand side of the screen (located under the word Go) 3. Scroll down to Format 4. Tap the drop down arrow under Format 5. Choose Adobe ePUB eBook (this eliminates audiobooks from your choices) 6. Tap the other drop down menus if you’d like to further narrow your options by Subject, Publisher, Awards, etc. 7. Scroll all the way down 8. Tap the box next to “Available Now” (this eliminates titles that are already checked out by other patrons) 9. Tap “Search” 10. A list of available eBooks will be generated
CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP C: How to Checkout Once you’ve chosen your book, tap the “Add to eBookbag” button right next to Adobe ePUB eBook. WISH LIST: Any time during the browsing process, you can add Adobe ePub eBooks to your Wish List by clicking on “Add to Wish List.” This list will keep track of books you may want to borrow in the future. It will NOT put items on hold or check them out. To do that, you would have to click on “Place a hold” or “Add to eBookbag.” Tap “Proceed to checkout” unless you want to keep browsing Type in your library card number (starts with pppl and is 14 characters long, no spaces, no need to capitalize) (Fig. 1) Tap the box right next to “Remember me on this device” Tap Login Right below the title of your selected book is a drop down menu for “Lending Period” (Fig. 2) Tap the downward arrow then tap the lending period you prefer (7 day, 14 day, 21 day) If you change your mind or if you make a mistake, you can tap Remove to remove the eBook from your eBookbag (Fig. 2) Tap “Confirm checkout” A cover of the book, the title and expiration date will appear Tap Download Once the “Loading New Title” message disappears, tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines Tap Bookshelf Fig. 1

CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP D: How to Read your eBook From the Bookshelf, tap the book cover to open your eBook Tap the right side of the screen to advance the book Tap the left side of the screen to go back a page Tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines to access the following options: tap Details to access a Description of the book. Tap Files to access the Download Status of your eBook tap Navigation to access the Table of Contents (Fig. 1) tap Return/Delete to return and/or delete your eBook tap Bookshelf to return to your Bookshelf tap Bookmarks to do the following things (Fig. 2): -- tap Add Bookmark to bookmark a page -- tap Bookmarks (This Title) to access pages you’ve bookmarked while reading the current eBook --tap Bookmarks (All Titles) to access pages you’ve bookmarked on all the eBooks in your Bookshelf tap Reader Settings to change options like Brightness, Font Size, Font Style, Orientation To find the definition of a word, tap and hold the word until a box with the word “dictionary” pops up. Remove your finger then tap “dictionary.”

CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP E: How to Place eBooks on Hold If the book you’d like to borrow is currently checked out, you will see the “Place a Hold” button, instead of “Add to eBookbag” Tap “Place a Hold” Type in your library card number (if you haven’t already) and tap “Login” You will be prompted to type in your email address twice (Fig. 1) Tap “Place a Hold” You will receive an email when the selected title becomes available for checkout You will have 3 days to check out the selected title, once you receive the email Fig. 1
CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP F: How to Retrieve eBooks on Hold When the eBook you reserved becomes available, a message will be sent to the email you specified during the Place Hold process (Fig. 1) A link to the library’s digital website will appear in the email. Tap this link (Fig. 1) From the library’s digital site, Tap My Account Type in your library card number then tap Login A list of options will be displayed, then: Tap My Holds Tap Add to eBookbag Follow the checkout procedure as outlined above

CHECKOUT INSTRUCTIONS STEP G: How to Return/Delete eBooks From your home page, tap your Overdrive App From the Bookshelf, look for the eBook you want to return early or to delete from your Nook Look for the plus sign to the right of the title and tap it Tap Return/Delete Tap “Return then Delete” if you want to return your book (which will remove it from your digital account at the library) as well as delete it from your Nook (Fig. 1) Tap “Delete only” to delete the book from your Nook but not from your account. This choice gives you the option of re-downloading the title (Fig. 1) You can also return/delete from within your eBook (in reading mode) tap the menu Icon with the three stacked lines an option bar will appear tap Return/Delete Fig. 1
STEP H: How to access your Account:
Open the Overdrive App Tap the menu icon with the three stacked lines Tap Get Books Tap the library’s website You will be taken to the library’s digital site Tap My Account Type in your library card number and log on (unless you’ve logged on already) A list of options will be displayed (Fig. 1) Click on My Checkouts to see what you’ve checked out or if you need to re-download your eBook Click on “My Holds” to download eBooks you’ve placed on hold Click on “My Wish List” to display books you’ve added to your wish list. If you’d like to check out a book from this list, just tap “Add to eBookbag” and follow the checkout procedures.

Currently, there is NO RENEW OPTION on Overdrive. In order to borrow your eBook again, you will have to go through the BORROWING PROCESS as detailed above.
