Keeping you informed HP Color LaserJet 5500/5550: distinguishing 500 Sheet Feeder revisions
HP Color LaserJet: HP Glossy media packaging changes—weight, part numbers and sheet count
Two versions of the 500 Sheet Feeder were developed for the HP Color LaserJet 5500 and 5550:
Background HP is changing the messaged weights and, in some cases, the part numbers and sheet count of some of our glossy and matte laser papers. The paper and paper properties are not changing. The change to the new messaged weights is needed to make them consistent with common retail paper weight categories. This may result in the weights on the packaging differing from the weights listed in some LaserJet printer drivers and on the printer control panel.
• Revision A—C7130A–C7130-67901 • Revision B—C7130B–C7130-67902 Revision A will work properly ONLY with the CLJ 5500. Revision B will work properly with BOTH the CLJ 5500 and 5550. Therefore, it is important to have only Revision B available as service parts for customers. Following is the method of determining whether a feeder is Revision A or Revision B. Pull the tray partially out of the sheet feeder and look just inside the cavity on the right side. Revision B sheet feeders have a blue switch (1) pictured below that allows the user to switch the tray number indicator (2) from its current setting to “5.”

Details As part of an overall HP media strategy for ink and laser paper, the packaging appearance, messaged paper weight and, in some cases, sheet count are changing for HP Glossy laser paper and Matte Brochure laser paper. The category names are not changing: Presentation, Brochure and Photo. The changes to the messaged weight on the package mean that the weight may not match exactly the weight/ paper type listed in the printer driver and on the control panel. For example, in the driver for the LaserJet CP3525 under Paper Type > Presentation 96-130g, the name “HP Glossy 130” is listed. On the control panel under PAPER HANDLING > TRAY
TYPE, the name “HP Glossy 130” is also listed. The table below shows the weight for glossy Presentation paper CG988A is changing from 130 gsm to 120 gsm. The customer should continue to choose the “HP Glossy 130” type for this Presentation paper.

HP Color LaserJet CM6030/ CM6040/CM6049/CP6015 MFP Series: image drum yield What is the stated yield for the image drums? The stated yield of the image drums (CB384A, CB385A, CB386A, CB387A, CE304C, CE305C, CE306C, CE307C) is 35,000 pages. Actual yield results may vary significantly according to usage conditions. How does HP determine this yield? The Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black image drums for the Color LaserJet CM6030MFP, CM6040MFP, CM6049MFP and CP6015 printer series have a stated yield of 35,000 pages. This number is based on printing two-page simplex jobs at 2,500 pages per day on letter/ A4 size media, long-edge feed, with documents at 5 percent coverage, which are similar to the ISO yield test pages. There is no ISO Standard for image drum yield. Actual yield results may vary significantly according to usage conditions. Why is HP providing additional clarification on the yield of the image drums? HP understands that there are various customer usage models for these devices. These usage models result in image drum yields that differ from those obtained in the original HP testing. Although drums achieve the stated life under the conditions stated above, other customer usage models may not achieve this image drum life. Therefore, HP is providing additional clarification on factors affecting yields so customers can better understand the factors affecting image drum life. Image drum optimization HP always actively works to optimize our print engines for better performance, and is providing several optimizations to improve these printer products to support different customer usage models. HP encourages you to implement these firmware upgrades to better optimize your devices. The latest firmware release is version 20100306 52.071.4 for the Color LaserJet CM6030MFP, CM6040MFP and CM6049MFP, and version 20100121 04.060.6 for the Color LaserJet CP6015. This firmware can be found on hp.com. What factors can impact the yield of the image drums? The actual yield of the image drum will vary based on several different factors. The yield of the image drums is dependent on the number of rotations of the internal components inside the image drum. Image drum yield is also dependent on the usage model. Different usage models such as duplex printing, job complexity and job length, may increase the wear on certain components inside the image drums and reduce the number of pages that may be printed.
For more information, visit: www.hp.com www.hp.com.
The factors listed below can (cumulatively) impact the yield of the image drums: 1. Number of pages in each print job Image drum yield is specified for two-page, simplex print jobs. Printing jobs in excess of two pages may maintainor, in some cases, increase image drum yield. However, one-page jobs may reduce the yield of the image drums because they require additional rotations of the internal components of the image drums, which will decrease the yield.
Fig. 6
2. Toner coverage Image drum yield is specified for 5 percent coverage per each drum. When printing documents less than 5 percent coverage, the device will execute an adjustment in order to maintain print quality. Because of this adjustment, image drum yield may be reduced when lower coverage documents are printed. 3. Number of pages printed per day The printing device performs maintenance on a daily basis, which requires the internal components of the image drum to rotate and decrement life/yield. There is some margin built into the internal components of the image drum to withstand the typical maintenance cycles of the printer. When printing fewer pages, image drum yield can be reduced. For example, the Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black image drums for the Color LaserJet, CM6030MFP, CM6040MFP, CM6049MFP and CP6015 printer series have an approximate yield of 30,000 pages when printing two-page simplex jobs at 220 pages per day. This results when printing documents with letter/A4 size media, long-edge feed and with an approximate 5 percent coverage and similar complexity to the ISO yield and performance pages. If printing less than 220 pages per day the yield of the image drum will be reduced.
6
CP6015. This firmware can be found on hp.com. 6. Duplex printing Image drum yield is specified for two-page simplex print jobs. The yield of the image drums can be affected by duplex jobs because of the additional time required to process a duplex job. This requires extra rotations of the internal components inside the image drums, which can result in a decreased yield.
Fig. 7
4. Power save settings (sleep delay) Sleep cycles are directly correlated to the printer performing internal maintenance, as referenced in item #3. For the 30,000 page yield, as referenced in item #3, the number of pages printed per day was obtained based on a sleep delay setting of 30 minutes. Increasing the sleep delay can positively impact the yield.
Fig. 8
5. Print job complexity Complex print jobs that require additional time to process, such as heavy graphics or complex PowerPoint® files, may force the device to cycle up and down and negatively impact the yield of the image drum. The printer has the ability to minimize the cycling associated with complex print jobs to maximize the image drum life. The printer will do this automatically if it projects the image drum life is falling short of target. This new feature is enabled in the latest firmware version 20100306 52.071.4 for the Color LaserJet CM6030MFP, CM6040MFP, and CM6049MFP and version 20100121 04.060.6 for the Color LaserJet
HP LaserJet Series Printers: changes to the usage pages for “Print Usage Tracker” With the March 2010 firmware release, many of the latest HP LaserJet products will provide a new page counting methodology known as “Print Usage Tracker.” The “Print Usage Tracker” feature will be an optional page counting feature that can be enabled if desired by the product owner or administrator. Today’s current page counting methods were designed to enable efficient service and support. The Print Usage Tracker feature implements new page counting methods that are more aligned with today’s job accounting needs. Advances in firmware technology now allow for these changes. The administrator or owner of the product(s) has the option either to enable the new counting method or to do nothing. If the new counting method is enabled, the device cannot return to the previous counting method. It is important to understand this. If the feature is not enabled, nothing will change on the device and it will continue to count pages as it originally did from the factory. This document will provide an overview of how the Print Usage Tracker feature will influence a product’s page counting capabilities. Device administrators and product owners should review this information in order to make an informed decision whether to permanently enable the new counting behavior or to stay with the original factory
For more information, visit: www.hp.com www.hp.com.
7
counting behavior. What will change if the new page counting method is enabled? If the new page counting method is enabled, the product’s behavior for incrementing duplex page count information will change. This page count information is viewable from two places: the printed Usage Page and the products Embedded Web Server (EWS) Usage page. The information below provides an explanation of what values change and how those changes will be counted on both Usage Pages. All of the changes listed below apply to both the printed Usage Page and the EWS Usage Page. See Fig. 9 and Fig. 10 for sample Usage pages with the changes noted to match the bullet points below (A, B, C, etc.). NOTE: The examples provided are a representation of a Usage Page for an HP LaserJet multifunction device. Changes for single-function printers will be very similar to what is presented below where applicable.

Usage Page changes A) Duplex counts for Mono and Color will count only sides where toner has been applied and will not increment for sides that do not contain toner.1 B) The Duplex Mono Column count value will only increment by a value of one for each side of a duplexed sheet of paper where Mono toner is applied to the page. (Example: If only one side of a sheet of paper has Mono toner applied, the count will increment by a value of one. If both sides have Mono toner applied, the count will increment by two.)1 C) The Duplex Color Column count value will only increment by a value of one for each side of a duplexed sheet of paper where Color toner is applied to the page. (Example: If only one side of a sheet of paper has Color toner applied, the count will increment by a value of one. If both sides have Color toner applied, the count will increment by two.)2 Additional example: A three-page document from an application is printed in duplex mode. The first page of the document contains color. The second page and third page contain black text (K) toner only. The document is printed on two sheets of paper and includes one side with Color toner (C, M, Y) applied (Page 1), one side with Black toner (K) applied (Page 2), one page with Black toner (K) applied (Page 3). The last page of the second sheet of paper is left blank because there are only three pages in the document. As a result, the Color Duplex count will increment by one and the Duplex Mono count will increment by two. D) The Duplex Unit value has been changed to the single side Letter or A4 equivalent value (same as Simplex “Units” values) to reflect the new counting method described in the bullets above for A) B) and C). E) Only pages with toner applied to them will be counted in the Mono and Color Simplex and Duplex columns. Because of this, the Duplex 1 Image columns will no long increment and will always contain asterisks.
F
F) The Scanned (Copy, Send and Fax) section (multifunction products only) and the second page of the Usage Page will not be affected by this new functionality. Changes mentioned in bullets A-E will also be applicable to the Embedded Web Server Usages pages seen in Fig. 10.

4) Review the acceptance screen so you understand the Terms and Conditions and feel comfortable with them. 5) If you are comfortable with the acceptance statements and how the new counting functionality may or may not affect your HP device or product use model then choose to enable the feature. As stated previously, it is very important to understand that once enabled the device cannot return to the previous counting method.

Fig. 10: EWS Usage Page screen shot
In accordance with the new methodology, specifically the changes described above in bullet points B, C and D, the Duplex page counts on a device will be remapped when the Print Usage Tracker feature is enabled. Values in the “Duplex” Mono and Color column will be doubled and values in the Duplex “Units” column will be halved to reflect the new methodology’s focus on duplex sides. Values in the “Total” column will not change. How is the new page counting method enabled and what is needed? 1) Verify your product supports the new feature and that your product has the necessary version of firmware to enable it. NOTE: A quick glance at the product matrix below will indicate if the new functionality is supported in your product and the version of firmware that is required to obtain the feature. Functionality support will only be available for those products listed in the matrix. If your product is not listed, no support will be provided.

Contact information can be found in the “Service and Support” section of your product’s USE guide. 1 This does not apply to copy jobs. Copy jobs scan images into the copy pipeline using a CCD scanner. When this process is performed, it is similar to taking a picture of the original. Because of how this technology works, the device does not have the ability to determine whether the original contains an image on the page and therefore if a blank page is copied, the copy system will still count the page as a Mono or Color page based on the original setting for the copy. 2 NOTE: Most products support the Duplex Blank Pages Feature to increase the throughput speed of the device. Products that support the feature and have it enabled will not duplex jobs that contain one sheet of paper with toner only applied to the front side of the sheet (e.g., one sheet of paper with an image on page 1, and page 2 left blank). Due to this behavior, the Simplex count will increment by one instead of the Duplex Count. This feature is enabled by default and can be accessed through the Control Panel at Administration > Device Behavior > Tray Behavior > Duplex Blank Pages (MFP Multifunction Devices) and from the MENU button > Configure Device > System Setup > Tray Behavior > Duplex Blank Pages (for single-function devices).
Functionality support will only be available for those products listed in the matrix. If your product is not listed, no support will be provided.

HP LaserJets drawer statement: Very Low HP designs its LaserJet printer systems to deliver outstanding value and print quality over the life of the printer. In order to accomplish this, the LaserJet printer system is made up of the printer itself and the HP LaserJet print cartridge/s. The design details of the print cartridge/s used in HP LaserJet printers differs between printer models to reflect the different customer needs being addressed by different printer models. These design differences are driven by HP’s goal of delivering the best value, printing experience and outstanding print quality for a variety of customers who have different printing needs. Newly released HP products have printer functionality that allows customers to continue to print until the print quality is no longer acceptable to the customer. Below are summaries that explain designed cartridge life, printing beyond the designed cartridge life and the HP warranty. Designed cartridge life In recent years, HP LaserJet, Color LaserJet Printers and Multifunctional Product cartridge yields have been calculated using standard ISO/IEC test methodologies. For more information, see http://www.hp.com/pageyield/ articles/us/en/LaserJetPageYields.html. HP publishes declared ISO/IEC page yield numbers for each LaserJet cartridge (where the ISO/IEC test method is applicable). See http://www.hp.com/pageyield/us/en/index.html. The ISO/IEC yield methodologies allow the customer to compare the declared yield of cartridges from many different manufacturers. However, the printing style of the customer (type of documents printed, number of color pages, size of print jobs, image density, etc.) can have a substantial impact on the cartridge’s actual page yield. The impact of these factors is explained in further detail at http://www.hp.com/pageyield/articles/us/en/ HowLaserIsUsed.html. Printing beyond designed cartridge life Recent HP LaserJet products have functionality that allows customers to continue to print beyond the designed cartridge life. The specific functionality varies by printer; information for specific products is available in the product’s User Guide (available on www.hp.com). Warranty HP designs its print cartridges to provide excellent print quality and unparalleled reliability throughout the designed cartridge life based on this ISO/IEC yield testing. Printing beyond the designed cartridge life can impact cartridge reliability and print quality. When printing beyond the designed cartridge life, HP cartridge warranty does not apply.

Questions Question: What is the function that allows me to print beyond designed cartridge life and how do I enable it? Answer: Today’s products refer to this as “Very Low.” Information on how to enable this feature is available in the applicable printer User Guide(s), which can be accessed at www.hp.com. Question: What does the low message indicate? What does the “Very Low” message indicate? Answer: On some products, low indication is a notice provided to the customer that a cartridge is getting toward the end of the estimated cartridge life. It is HP’s attempt to provide some time for the customer to purchase a replacement cartridge prior to the “Very Low” indication. “Very Low” indication is a notice provided so that customers can monitor their printer output for print quality. Print quality resulting after this point will depend on what and how the printer is used. Printing beyond “Very Low” is a customer’s choice and will also depend on the customer’s print quality requirements. The supply does not need to be replaced unless or until the print quality is no longer acceptable. Question: I have an important job to print, how many pages will I get after “Very Low”? Can I be assured that my print job will have good print quality? Answer: HP designs its print cartridges to provide excellent print quality and unparalleled reliability throughout the designed cartridge life. Printing beyond “Very Low” is a customer’s choice. Print quality resulting after this point will depend on what and how the printer is used and customer print quality requirements. HP cannot determine how many additional pages, if any, a customer may print beyond the designed cartridge life. How long the remaining cartridge will print will be based on what and how the printer is used and whether the customer determines the print quality to be adequate. For more detailed information, visit http://www.hp.com/ pageyield/articles/us/en/HowLaserIsUsed.html. Question: Can I change the default behavior if I don’t like it? Answer: Yes, this is customer configurable on newer printers with this functionality. The access to this func tionality varies by printer, information is available in product-specific User Guides (available at www.hp.com). Question: Does printing past “Very Low” affect my cartridge and/or printer warranty? Answer: Printing beyond the “Very Low” indication can impact cartridge reliability and print quality. When printing beyond the designed cartridge life, HP cartridge warranty does not apply.

Question: When printing past “Very Low,” how will I know when it is time to replace the cartridge?
Question: Why am I able to print more pages when I’m in “Very Low” condition?
Answer: When printing past “Very Low,” there will be no notification of when to change the cartridge. Replacement of the cartridge(s) will be the customer’s choice. The supply does not need to be replaced unless or until the print quality is no longer acceptable. This feature is designed to give customers a choice based on their project and needs.
Answer: Cartridge life is designed based on an average customer printing environment. When a customer’s printing varies from these design conditions, the cartridge life may vary.
Question: How do I know which cartridge is printing past “Very Low”? How do I know if there is more than one cartridge printing past “Very Low,” and which ones? Answer: This is clearly communicated on each printer that has this functionality. The messages displayed vary by printer; information is available in product-specific User Guides (available at www.hp.com). Monochrome printers There is only one cartridge. The “Very Low” messaging will be displayed on the control panel (if there is one) and on the Supplies Status Page.* Color printers • One color cartridge is printing past “Very Low.” It will include the color that is printing past “Very Low,” e.g., “Cyan cartridge very low.” The information will be displayed on the control panel (if there is one) and on the Supplies Status Page.* • More than one color cartridge is printing past “Very Low.” The message will be “supplies very low.” To determine the status of each cartridge, see the Supplies Status Page.* Question: How does this functionality work for color printers? Answer: If a customer wants to print beyond “Very Low” on a color printer, this is allowed by pushing the “check mark” or “OK” or “Continue.” This procedure is required for individual cartridges that reach “Very Low.” The options available may vary by printer; information is available in product-specific User Guides (available at www.hp.com). Question: How does this functionality work for monochrome printers? Answer: Printing continues beyond “Very Low” on a monochrome printer without any customer interaction. The options available may vary by printer; information is available in product-specific User Guides (available at www.hp.com). Question: How does this functionality work, if available, for older printers? Answer: Similar functionalities have been provided on earlier products. HP Scanjet 7000n: replacing the hard disk Servicing and repairing the Scanjet 7000n is made easier by allowing the user to directly replace the hard disk drive (HDD) without the need to send the unit to HP or a visit from a service representative. In this way, the user is able to reuse the HDD from the old unit in the new unit. However, reusing the HDD does have its conditions and requirements, and if these are not followed it may cause unnecessary problems for the user. This document provides some topics to consider when replacing the HDD. It is a complement to the online Service and Support training provided at Grow@hp (ID 01158572 and 01158574) and provides some updated information. All cases described in this document apply to the normal, non-encrypted HDD. The encrypted HDD cannot be replaced and, consequently, servicing a 7000nx (the 7000n with an encrypted HDD) requires the replacement of the whole unit. Note that a replacement 7000nx includes a new HDD—this is a change from the details provided in the online training. Using the original HDD in a replacement 7000n Before the user removes the HDD from the current unit, it is recommended, if possible, to use the EWS access to perform a backup and export the user lists from the device. This step allows for the best transfer scenario (see Case 3) and the highest customer satisfaction. In all cases, once users follow the instructions on how to put their existing HDD in the replacement unit the unit should turn out without problem. A couple of differences to note are: • The 7000n unit will take a little longer than usual to boot the first time. This is normal as the unit prepares for operation with this HDD. • In some cases it may be necessary to boot the unit twice to have full functionality, but this is a rare condition. The following sub-sections describe several cases to consider, based on the setup of the unit in question. Case 1: No local users configured This first case applies to users who: • Do not use “Local” Users/Admins in their configuration • Did not back up the configuration settings of the unit before the hardware failure
For more information, visit: www.hp.com www.hp.com.
13
In this case, all of the “soft configuration data” that was present in the old system will be present in the new system, with the exception of configuration settings for the Jetdirect network card. For example, if the user had set the system name or had manually configured the IP settings—or anything else in the “Networking” tab of the EWS—these settings are lost and need to be reconfigured manually. In addition, a backup from the device does not help because it does not restore the Jetdirect network card settings. Case 2: Local users configured The second case applies to users who: • Have the device configured with “Local Users and Local Admins” • Did not back up the data or export their users to a CSV file before the hardware failure In this case, most “soft” configuration settings will be preserved. All Jetdirect network card settings will be lost (see Case 1). Additionally, the Local Users and Admins that had been set up in the original unit will be visible through the EWS but will not be functional on the new unit. It will appear as though all Users were transferred, but in actuality none of the Local Users will be functional. It will also not be possible to edit the Local Users/Admins from the EWS. Even though the list will appear, selecting Users will result in a “no selection” error. Since the user does not have a backup or an exported file from the original unit, the only alternative is to back up the configuration settings and then perform a cold reset and restore the backup. If the user is unable to perform a backup before performing the cold reset, the device will have to be completely reconfigured.
For more information, visit: www.hp.com.
Case 3: Local users configured and backup available This final case applies to users who: • Have the device configured with “Local Users and Local Admins” • Did back up the data and/or export the Users to a CSV file before the hardware failure This case is essentially the same as Case 2. However, since the user has a backup they can either: 1. Perform a cold reset and then restore the backup/ import 2. Just restore the backup/import Users When performing the restore, the unit may warn the user that the backup is from a different system, but it is still possible to proceed. Once the restore is complete, all Local Users should also be restored and should function as expected. Note again that the Jetdirect network card settings must be re-entered manually, if desired, since this data is not included in the backup. One final note is regarding Quick Sets that specifically contain paths and authentication information: “Save to Network Folder” quick sets. These quick sets will not function correctly (authentication will probably fail) when the original HDD is placed in the new unit. Additionally, these quick sets cannot be edited via the EWS. The admin will have to delete these quick sets and re-enter them in order to make them functional.

HP Scanjet 7000n: performing a Cold Reset The Scanjet 7000n/7000nx has the capability of performing a Cold Reset. This kind of reset is the most complete and aggressive, setting the unit back to its pristine, out-of-the-box state with no customer configuration data. In some service cases it is necessary to reset the unit to this pristine state. This document provides the instructions on how to perform a Cold Reset. Instructions to perform a Cold Reset The Cold Reset is a feature of the BIOS of the 7000n/ 7000nx and needs to be accessed from the Startup Menu. The user must first shut down the unit in the standard manner and then follow the instructions in this section. Enter the Startup Menu. Turn on the scanner (by pressing the power button on the top of the unit) and wait for the HP logo to show on the display (indicating that the unit is booting). As soon as the HP logo is displayed, press the “ESC” key (top-left corner of the keyboard) and keep pressing it to enter the Startup Menu. By the time the progress number reaches 3/7 the display should show the following:
Enter the Administrative Menu. If the unit has a BIOS-level administrator password set (recommended), the user will first have to select “Sign In” and enter that password. Use the up/down arrow keys on the keyboard to move the highlight to the “Sign In” option and press “Enter.” Type in the password and “Enter” again. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard highlight the “Administrative Menu” option and press “Enter.” A menu similar to the following will display:
Fig. 13: Administrative Menu
Select Cold Reset option. Using the arrow keys, scroll to the “Cold Reset” option and press either “Enter” or the spacebar to select it. An “X” will show between the brackets “[ ]”. Then scroll down to the “Back” option and press “Enter” to return to the Startup Menu. In the Startup Menu press “Enter” again to select the “Continue” option. This will restart the unit, performing a Cold Reset and clearing all configuration data.

HP Scanjet 7000n: turning on the scanner When turning on a unit, the Scanjet 7000n/7000nx behaves and is configured in ways that may be confusing. This document provides some details to help the user turn on the scanner for the first time.
It is possible that labels on the product may cover up and obscure the front power button. Fig. 16 shows an example where the Microsoft end-user license agreement sticker covers the power button and the button is not visible until the sticker is peeled back (Fig. 17).
Solution or workaround: The Scanjet 7000n/7000nx has two power switches and both need to be used to turn on the scanner. The first power switch is located on the back of the unit, as shown in Fig. 14.
Fig. 16: Unit with label covering power button
Fig. 14: Back of Scanjet 7000n
This switch in the back needs to be turned on first. Note that no activity will be seen on the unit when this switch is turned on—no LEDs, lights, display or fan turn on. Once the switch in the back is on, the power button on the top of the unit needs to be pressed (see Fig. 15). The light on this button will turn on to indicate that the unit is starting its boot-up sequence. Note that the green button in the control panel to the right of the display is not a power button; it is a start button used to initiate scanning. Fig. 17: Label peeled back to show power button

Single-function and multifunction printers (MFP)—49.XXXX Errors: Using the “Auto Recovery” feature What is the Auto Recovery feature? With the release of the spring 2010 firmware roll, many of currently shipping HP products will have a new feature which allows the administrator to configure the device to auto recover from an intermittent 49.XXXX error. The list of products that support this feature are listed in a table below. How and when to use the feature A 49.XXXX error can occur randomly when a device is trying to perform an action that it was not designed to comply with or if it encounters a conflict within the device operating system (system error). When a 49.XXXX error occurs intermittently, it can become an annoyance to the users of the device because the device requires the power to be turned OFF and back ON (power cycle) to resume activities. Since intermittent 49.XXXX errors can occur when a user is not in front of the device, the user may find the device in the 49.XXXX state when he has an urgent need to use it. When this occurs, users can become frustrated waiting for the device to go through the boot and warm up process before they can use it. With the introduction of the “Auto Recovery” setting, the administrator of the device can now configure the device to auto recover (i.e., power cycle) when an intermittent 49.XXXX error occurs. Enabling the setting allows the device to perform this action without user interaction lessening the opportunity for the user to have to do this. This in turn helps the administrator increase the uptime of their HP device and limit calls to a help desk for an error that may never occur again. How to enable When the latest firmware (Spring 2010) has been uploaded to the product the feature will automatically be enabled. If an administrator wants to validate that the feature is available or would like to disable it for any reason he can access the following menus through the control panel. Remote access can be achieved by using the products Embedded Web Server (EWS) “Settings” screen and then navigating to the same menus found below for the control panels.
Single function color or monochrome printer 1. Press the Menu Button. 2. Next, select the Configure Device Menu. 3. Select the System Setup Menu. 4. Select the Auto Recovery selection. 5. Choose to disable or enable.
Fig. 20
Fig. 21
Important: additional information to know about the feature Control Panel messages seen after the Auto Recovery 1. When enabled on an MFP, the device will show the following message after a successful auto recovery (see Fig. 22). This message will be shown until the user either acknowledges the message by pressing the “OK” button, or the Inactivity Timer value is reached. When this screen is displayed, the device will still be able to print and/or print and receive faxes but will ignore any presses of the “START” button until the screen has been acknowledged by pressing the “OK” button. Note: Single-function devices will display similar messaging.
“M” Series MFP 1. Press the Administration Icon. 2. Next, access the Management menu. 3. Select the Auto Recovery selection.
Fig. 22
4. Choose the Auto setting. (See Figs. 20 and 21.)
For more information, visit: www.hp.com www.hp.com.
24
2. The device will display a screen similar to the following message (see Fig. 23) if it receives a malformed print job within the first 15 minutes after recovering from a 49.XXXX error. This message will not go away when the Inactivity Timer value is met and the printer will remain in an “Offline” state until the user either acknowledges the message by pressing the “OK” button, or cancels the malformed job by pressing the “Cancel” button. If the user presses the “OK” button, the print job will most likely not print correctly or print illegible characters. In most cases, numerous pages may print in this fashion so it is recommend that the user presses the “Cancel” button. When this screen is displayed, the device will still be able to receive faxes but presses of the “START,” “Reset” and “Cancel” buttons will not process until the screen has been acknowledged by pressing the “OK” button.
Each of these could cause the printer’s firmware to try initiating an action that the device has no way to accomplish. In situations like this, the device may present the error if it has no other way to ignore the action. When these errors occur, the only way to recover from this exception error is to turn the power OFF and back ON. (The Auto Recovery feature will do this automatically.) HP extensively tests MFP and printer firmware before its release to provide that the occurrence of 49 errors and other non-recoverable device errors is at an acceptable level. HP provides that the frequency of these errors is low enough that typical end users will rarely encounter one. In the rare circumstance where a 49 error does occur, HP has now implemented the Auto Recovery feature to lessen the impact that these errors may have on the end user of the device. Single-function device support
Multifunction device support
If a product is not found in this list, it will not support the feature.

What if errors continue to be seen? 3. If another 49.XXXX error occurs within 30 minutes after the device performs the Auto Recovery process, the device will go “offline” and will present the standard 49.XXXX error message on the control panel. The device will not Auto Recover and this message will require the end user to turn the power OFF and back ON. This behavior is intentional and is designed to give visibility to the Administrator that the issue is occurring more frequently than what would be considered intermittent and may need to be investigated.

Background: Additional background on 49.XXXX errors 49.XXXX errors are displayed when the MFP or printer has been asked to perform an action that the device firmware is not capable of and may not have been designed to comply with. Some of possibilities are: • Printing files with unsupported programming command. • A unique combination of user environment and user interactions with the device • Interfacing with a third-party solution that was not designed to work with the device

HP Monochrome LaserJet MFP updates HP LaserJet M3027/M3035 MFP Series: solutions provided by the 48.110.7 firmware roll Issue: Warning: When this update is performed, a manual power cycle will be required if updating from version 20070614 48.031.6 or versions prior to this release. This means that someone must manually turn the power of the device “off” and “on” using the power switch. No methods that are available to remotely power cycle the device will work. Only turning the power switch “off” and back “on” will finish the update process. It is important to note that the device will still receive faxes and in most cases, a user will be able to send a fax, digital send, copy and print while in this state. The update process will not be complete until the power switch has been turned “off” and “on” and the MFP comes to a READY state. This means that certain issues and behavior changes addressed by this update will not be available until update is complete. HP highly recommends not leaving the device in this state and power cycling to assure correct product behavior. How do we know the device requires a power cycle? The users of the device are informed of the need to power cycle by a message on the HP Easy Select Control panel that states that the Upgrade is complete and to turn the device “off” and then “on.” A “Hide” button will also be available on the screen that will allow a user to hide the screen to make a copy, perform a digital send or send a fax, but it will not finish the update until the power cycle has been performed. It is important to realize that because the device has not completed its update there may be some circumstances where not all features may work as expected.

Service action A) Ensure the product fits within the warranty start date specified (any device manufactured prior to December 31, 2009). Check the serial number. If the fifth digit in the serial number is a numeric character then the device was manufactured on or prior to December 31, 2009. B) Ensure the product failure exhibits one or more of the symptoms mentioned above in the description section. C) If both A and B are within bounds, replace the Scanner Flatbed Assembly and the Formatter as documented in the Service Manual and mark the CSO as a Service Advisory.
Solution 1. User has a 13.2 Jam in Duplexer error message and it does not clear, even after it is confirmed that no sheets or scraps of media are anywhere in the paper path. a. The unit may also boot up to a 13.2 error either out of box or after multiple power cycles. 2. Perform a paper sensor test and confirm proper operation of all sensors. In particular, check the Duplexer Paper Sensor in the following manner: a. At the start of the Paper Sensor Test, the duplexer sensor (third digit of the four in the upper left of the display) should be “0” (at the start of the test, all four digits should be “0”). b. Remove the cassette and release the duplexer pan, when in the pan is in its full down position, the duplexer sensor digit should be “1.” c. If the sensor flag is manually moved, the digit should be “1” when the flag is in the full down position, a “0” as the flag moves to the middle position, and a “1” when the flag is in the full up position. 3. If the sensor does not respond as described above, replace the HVPS Assembly (P/N RM1-6280-000CN). 4. If the duplexer sensor digit is a “1” at the start of the test but still operates properly as described in Step 2 above, then replace the Lower Paper Feed Guide (P/N RM1-6263-000CN). Feedback requested: If you do have this issue, please fix as shown above. Also contact Cindy Kyle at [email protected] with printer model number, serial number and a copy of the config page, so we can see the age of the printer (pages printed) and investigate further. If we see this issue growing, we may also ask for the faulty part to be shipped to us.

HP LaserJet P4010/4510 Series: Z-Shaft removal and replacement Issue During shipping, the c-clip on the z-shaft gear can become loose or break, causing the gears to become misaligned. The result is no pick issue or paper jams from tray 2. Solution Remove tray 2 and visually inspect the z-shaft for a missing or broken c-clip. If the c-clip has become loose and it is not broken, the c-clip can be reattached to the gear. If the c-clip is broken or missing, use the c-clip that comes with the new z-Shaft assemble and reattach.

HP LaserJet P4010/4510 Series: slow printing/won’t print from tray 2 Issue When a print job is sent to the printer, the printer will display processing job on the control panel, and will continually ramp up and down attempting to print the job. After several minutes, the printer will return to ready without posting any error messages. Occasionally, after several minutes the print job will print. Cause This issue is caused by the fuser not reaching the proper fusing temperature, which is the reason for the printer continually ramping up and down. The printer is attempting to heat the fuser to the correct fusing temperature to print the job.
Solution The resolution is a two-step process. Replacing the fuser will resolve the issue and upgrading the firmware to 04.060.7 or higher will prevent future occurrences of the issue. Customers should print a configuration page to verify they have the latest DC Controller firmware 16. If the DC Controller firmware is lower than 16, customers should upgrade to 04.060.7 firmware or higher, even if they are not experiencing the issue as the new firmware will prolong the life of their fuser.

HP Color LaserJet printer updates HP Color LaserJet CP2020 Series: misprint error issue Issue description: A customer reports the “Misprint Error” displayed on the control panel. Often this is only on multiple page jobs. Sometimes a customer might also note seeing the “Jam in Tray 2” message displayed on the control panel. The problem only occurs during multiple page printing due to a paper pick issue with the second and subsequent sheets. When such a condition exists, the media arrives at the registration sensor too late, causing the image transfer timing issue. When the engine detects the paper has not arrived in time to perform the image transfer, the ITB must be cleaned off, which is why the engine goes into the cleaning cycle and displays the message “misprint press ok to continue.” Solution: The division has investigated the issue and found in most cases, the cause of the problem is due to a mispick issue from poor quality media and/or usage of the device in harsh environmental conditions. Under such usage conditions, the device experience media picking problem which causes timing issue of paper delivery into the transfer area. The following list includes some of main causes of a pick problem and the suggested fix (in parenthesis): 1. Poor quality media such has low fiber content, high calcium carbonate and high talc content media (Replace with high quality media.) 2. Worn or contaminated pick roller and separation pad (Replace with new roller/pad.) 3. Printing on media with glossy or slippery finish that is hard to pick (Replace with normal media.) 4. Contamination inside engine (especially in the pick area) from too many pages printed on poor quality media (Thoroughly clean inside engine.)
Cause: A pick problem may not be just one issue, but a combination of any or all of the above, as well as other problems not mentioned.
HP Color LaserJet CP2020 Series: excessive cleaning cycles Issue: The customer reports excessive cleaning cycles. Solution: The division has investigated the issue and found, in all the cases, the device is operating correctly, as designed. The product must perform a cleaning cycle to maintain print quality. Under certain environmental conditions such as H/H, the unit may perform more frequent cleaning than in N/N or L/L environmental condition. Question: What is considered a normal cleaning interval? Answer: It depends on the environmental condition. In N/N or L/L environmental condition, the cleaning cycle will run automatically every 100 pages. In the harsher H/H type environmental condition, the device must perform the cleaning cycle more often. The cleaning cycle in H/H is generally 50 pages. This can be higher depending on other factors, such as the job size, type of media, print coverage, etc. Question: Can the cleaning cycle be turned off or modified in its interval? Answer: No. The cleaning cycle cannot be turned off or modified, because it is needed to provide good print quality. Cause: The cleaning cycle is necessary to provide good print quality and it is part of the design of the product.
5. Harsh environmental condition, such as high temperature and high humidity environment (Move device to controlled environment.) 6. Printing on media with high moisture content due to saturation in H/H environment (Use freshly opened media.) 7. Improperly adjusted side and end paper guide (Adjust correctly.)

HP LaserJet CM3530/CP3525/ CP4025/CP4525: White streaks caused by dirty laser scanner glass
Summary: Toner or paper dust can accumulate on the glass that protects the laser scanner opening. The PGC is designed to clean the glass each time a print cartridge is removed and then reinserted.
Issue: A printed page shows streaks in one color. This is easily seen by printing the PQ Troubleshooting pages (see Fig. 34).
HP LaserJet CM3530 Color MFP Series: HP Jetdirect 690n Wireless Print Server not supported
Solution: First, identify which color has the white streak. Then, remove and reinsert the print cartridge. This will cause the protective glass cleaner (PGC) to wipe the debris off the laser scanner glass.
Issue: Some customers have attempted to use the HP Jetdirect 690n EIO card (J8007G) on the CM3530mfp. This EIO card is not supported on the CM3530mfp.
Note: If removing/re-inserting the cartridge does not resolve the issue, please escalate the case for further action.
Solution: Do not attempt to use the JetDirect Wireless EIO card with the CM3530mfp. While it may appear to function, a problem with the EIO slot of this product makes the Wireless EIO card incompatible. Note: The data sheet for the J8007G includes all the supported products. The CM3530mfp is not included in that list.
HP Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP Scanner: 12 Error Issue: “Scanner Error 12” appears on the control panel display of an HP CM1312 MFP product. Solution: Update to firmware revision 20090724 or later. In most cases, this will resolve the issue and it should always be the first course of action. If the problem persists, then additional scanner-related causes should be investigated. Summary: Various scanner-related parameters were adjusted to accommodate conditions that are more typical. Fig. 34: White streaks caused by toner or paper dust on the laser scanner protective glass

The following support guidelines should be followed by all customers. Please refer to the UPD Systems Administrator’s Guide for detail. Supported modifications of the HP Universal Print Driver 5.1 • The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) must be installed exactly as it was received from HP, with no modifications except as provided by HP-supplied utilities such as the Driver Configuration Utility, Driver Deployment Utility or HP Web Jetadmin. No other driver modifications are supported. • The HP UPD must be installed using the HP-supplied installer (install.exe) or using a Microsoft-recommended and HP-approved tool and/or process listed in HP UPD installation methods on page 30. The use of any other tool or method must be approved by HP in writing to be considered a supported installation method. • Any modifications to any HP UPD driver files (INF, MSI, etc.), making registry edits after installation, or manually copying or deleting files, except when explicitly instructed to do so by HP in writing, will result in an unsupported configuration. • HP UPD should be deleted using only Microsoft-supplied tools and procedures. Manual deleting of registry entries and/or driver files is not recommended and not supported. HP UPD supported upgrades HP will support upgrading from one version of the HP UPD to a newer version of the HP UPD, starting with v4.5. Upgrading from a non-HP Universal Print Driver to the HP Universal Print Driver, regardless of version or vendor, is not supported. For supported environments, customers should proceed with steps for new printer installation. Change from Unidrv v5 to Unidr v6: Current HP productspecific printer drivers and HP UPD rely on the UNIDRV. DLL or PSCRIPT5.DLL files supplied by Microsoft. On March 8, 2007, Microsoft ® updated its UNIDRV.DLL and PSCRIPT5.DLL files from v5.xxx to v6.xxx and as a consequence has caused changes in the structure of DEVMODE tables within UNIDRV or PSCRIPT based drivers.
When switching from older HP printer drivers prior to v61.74.xx.xx to newer driver versions, many customers have noticed that the paper type has changed from “Unspecified” to “Plain” or “Heavy Media” (others types also reported). For example, this could be seen in an upgrade from HP UPD v4.1 to v5.0. The paper type change is caused by a mismatch in the DevMode structures of the old driver and the new driver. HP printer drivers with file versions prior to 61 .074.xx.xx* were built with the Microsoft version 5 files, and HP drivers with file versions of 61.074.xx.xx* or later were built for compatibility with the Microsoft version 6 files. All supported releases of the HP UPD utilize v6 files. For this reason, upgrade from v5.xxx to v6.xxx is not a supported path. Therefore, if the existing HP driver version on the system is prior to v61.74.xx.xx, upgrade is not supported because of the known issues introduced by the change. To avoid this problem, first delete the existing printer and driver, install a v61.74.xxx or newer driver, then create a new printer. Environments that experience the symptoms from the change in v5 to v6 unidrv.dll will need to reset the DevMode structure. Assuming HP UPD v4.5 or higher installation on a server or client, the solution is to delete the old HP printer name and the existing HP printer and driver on both the server and all connecting clients (see System Admin Guide, Uninstall the HP UPD). Next, recreate the printer on the server. Point and print clients will need to delete the printer and reestablish the connection to the print server. When the printer is recreated with a v61.74.xxx driver (or newer), Windows® will create new DevMode structures that match the v6.xxx architecture for new printer. There is no need to delete and replace the ports associated with the deleted printer. For enterprise deployments requiring tools support of this process, please reference the HP Printer Administrator Resource Kit to test with the PRNCON tool.
