LTO-5—higher throughput, greater density, and added data security Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology—a powerful open-tape specification—was developed as an open-standard alternative to proprietary magnetic formats. Ever since its emergence in the late 1990s, the LTO has rapidly defined the “super tape” market. Today, it’s widely used with small- and large-computer systems, especially for backup. The original version, LTO-1, released in 2000, could hold 100 GB of data in a cartridge. LTO-5, released over a decade later (in 2010), offers 3 TB capabilities per cartridge. LTO-4 incorporated native encryption technology to protect data stored on tape, and so does LTO-5. Similar to its encryption support, LTO-5, like LTO-4, supports Write Once, Read Many (WORM) technology. But, in contrast to LTO-4, LTO-5 offers higher throughput and enhanced data security. What’s more, LTO-5 also offers backward-compatible read-and-write capability with LTO-4 cartridges.
LTO-5 on HP Integrity NonStop systems HP NonStop LTO-5 is the next iteration of HP NonStop LTO drives that began with LTO-2 and continued through LTO-4. LTO-5 is fully integrated and available for use in HP Integrity NonStop NS-series systems and HP Integrity NonStop BladeSystem servers. The NonStop LTO-5 tape drives offer an ideal solution for tape backup where security, speed, reliability, and the ability to archive are critical. If you did not move to NonStop LTO-4 drives earlier, this may be the time to upgrade to the more recent NonStop LTO-5 drives. Consider its key benefits: • Fewer cartridge changes: The NonStop LTO-5 tape drives come with an expanded magazine capacity—LTO-4 had a magazine capacity of 15, whereas LTO-5 has a capacity of 24 cartridges. This reduces the need for changing cartridges and helps keep costs down, while making tape management easier. • Faster access to data: The NonStop LTO-5 tape drives offer more density with the LTO-5 media. LTO-5 delivers 280 MB/s throughput (2:1 data compression). Faster throughput allows you to complete backup and archiving jobs faster. • Better user interface: LTO-5 is an interface that supports 8 Gb Fibre Channel (FC) connections. This allows LTO-5 to be deployed into an 8 Gb FC network, making it easier to stream data from high-performance storage disk drive systems to tape backup. In such deployments, the higher throughput performance offered with LTO-5 complements the high-speed network connection.

Depending on your needs, you can choose from six different versions of the NonStop LTO-5 tape drives: HP M8701A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive and M8702A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive HP M8701A ACL LTO-5 FC and M8702A ACL LTO-5 FC tape drives are fully read-and-write drives compatible with the fourth- and fifth-generation Ultrium data cartridges (LTO-4 and LTO-5). These tape drives also offer a further degree of investment protection through their backward-read compatibility with the third-generation Ultrium media (LTO-3). M8701A ACL LTO-5 FC and M8702A ACL LTO-5 FC tape drives can be configured as a tape library when using HP Entry Level Media Manager (ELMM) on HP NonStop systems. Key features and benefits • Benefit from a more dependable solution: The M8701A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive and M8702A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive set new standards in data integrity and reliability. They do so with a simple and robust design based on the inherently reliable LTO technology. • Grow your capacity: These tape drives store up to 3.0 TB per data cartridge (assuming 2:1 compression). With 24 such data cartridges, you can now store up to 72 TB (assuming 2:1 compression)—and increase your unit capacity. • Realize an increase in performance: These tape drives reduce interruptions with high speed and dynamic data rate matching that squeeze out a great performance from your HP NonStop server. • Get better price points: The M8701A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive and M8702A ACL LTO-5 FC Tape Drive combine high capacity with low media costs to deliver an exceptionally low TCO. • Gain added reliability: These tape drives protect your data with a simple, high-integrity data path, including read-and-write DRAM. • Extend tape library support for ELMM on NonStop systems: These tape drives can help you create a tape library by using ELMM on HP NonStop systems.

HP M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive HP M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive is a manual load tape drive designed for Integrity NonStop NS-series systems and Integrity NonStop BladeSystem servers. The HP M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive represents the fifth generation of HP LTO tape drive technology capable of storing up to 3 TB per cartridge. This tape drive provides investment protection with full read-and-write backward support with LTO-4 media, and the ability to read LTO-3 cartridge. With nearly double the capacity of previous generation LTO Ultrium drives, you now require fewer data cartridges to meet your storage needs, and this reduces your IT costs and increases your ROI significantly. The M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive lowers the cost of an entry-level tape drive on Integrity NonStop NS-series systems and Integrity NonStop BladeSystem servers, while increasing capacity and performance.
Key features and benefits • Gain more capacity: The M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive is a large-capacity drive capable of storing up to 3 TB (with LTO-5) of compressed storage on a single cartridge, requiring fewer data cartridges to meet storage needs. This significantly reduces your IT costs. • Transition to a more reliable solution: The exclusive HP data rate matching feature automatically adjusts the read-and-write speed of the tape drive based on the server and network environment. This increases performance, reduces mechanical wear on the drive, and extends tape life. Its soft load feature automatically moves the data cartridge into the load position. The advanced tape leader capture design provides fail-safe cartridge loading. And, the active head cleaning helps you get automated cleaning that increases the tape head life and reduces the need for cleaning the cartridge frequently. • Get better affordability: The high capacity of the tape drive combined with its low media cost gives you an exceptionally low TCO and enables a faster return on your investments. • Enable better investment protection: The M8705A LTO-5 SAS Tabletop Tape Drive delivers a compelling technology roadmap that presents a higher capacity, better performance tape solution with backward read-and-write compatibility with previous drive generations.
