HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer Getting Started St et uupp tthhe pphhoto pprrinter Steep 1: SSet u Remove the photo printer from the package ü Remove all items from the box. ü Carefully detach the packaging. Save the packaging, in case you ever want to transport or store your photo printer. ü Check to be sure you have the following: Ÿ HP PhotoSmart photo printer. Ÿ Printer cable - This bi-directional parallel cable is required for the photo printer. Ÿ Power cord - This cord will connect the photo printer to its power source. Ÿ Photo cartridges (2) - These are packed in the ends of the styrofoam pieces. Ÿ Accessories - This box contains the HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer CD, the User’s Guide, and software you can use to create your photo projects. Ÿ HP Photo Printing Sampler Kit - This kit contains samples of the HP PhotoSmart papers available for your photo projects. v Remove the tape from the top of the photo printer Tape w Decide where to put the photo printer ü Find a level, sturdy surface such as a desk or table. ü Select a location that is within 3 feet of your computer and a grounded electrical outlet. Note: Don’t plug in the photo printer yet. St ns es Steep 2: IIns nsttal alll tthhe pphhoto ccaartridg idges u Remove the tape from the photo cartridges Tape ü Take each photo cartridge out of its package. ü Grasp the green tab and peel off the blue tape. v Remove the tape from the cartridge holder Tape ü Open the photo cartridge door. ü Remove the tape. w Insert each photo cartridge ü Insert the photo cartridge into the holder, matching the symbol (star or moon) and color on the cartridge with the symbol and color on the holder. ü Press the cartridge down into its holder, then push the cartridge toward the back of the printer until you feel it snap into position. x Close the photo cartridge door St ap Steep 3: Add ppap apeer Note: At the end of this setup, you will print a Performance Page on plain paper, so for now, load plain paper in the IN tray. u Remove the IN tray ü First, pull out the OUT tray. ü Then, pull the purple IN tray handle and take the IN tray out of the printer. v Remove the tape from the IN tray Tape w Place a stack of paper into the IN tray ü Be careful not to load too much paper (no more than 20 sheets). The stack should be below the top edge of the IN tray. ü Always load paper in the portrait direction (the long edge is against the long edge of the IN tray). ü Use one kind and size of paper at a time. Do not mix paper types or sizes in the IN tray. St Steep 3 (c (coontinue nuedd) x Adjust the two paper guides ü Pinch the purple paper guides and move them so they fit close to the edges of the paper. Be careful not to bend the paper. y Place the IN tray back into the photo printer ü Push the IN tray all the way in until the handle comes to rest in the slot provided. Note: When you print, leave the OUT tray out (open) to catch the paper. Tip: The HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer User’s Guide and Online Help explain how to use manual feed to print one sheet at a time, and how to print on various paper types and sizes. St ct tthhe pphhoto pprrinter Steep 4: CCoonne nnect u Shut down your computer ü Close all applications. ü Shut down Windows 95. ü Turn your computer OFF. v Plug in your photo printer Computer Photo printer ü Connect the photo printer to the computer, using the printer cable that came in the package. ü Plug the photo printer into a grounded electrical outlet, using the power cord that came in the package. Note: If you have another printer and will be using it and the photo printer with a switch (A/B) box, see the HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer User’s Guide for instructions. w Turn the photo printer ON ü Press and release the purple power button (on the front of the printer). After a few seconds the lights stop blinking and the green light stays on. The photo printer is ready to print. If the red light is on, see the User’s Guide for instructions. St ns of Steep 5: IIns nsttal alll tthhe ssof ofttware The HP PhotoSmart photo printer comes with its own software—a printer driver. This driver must be installed for the photo printer to work with the PC. Note: These instructions are an overview. The HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer User’s Guide describes the software installation process in detail. u Turn your computer ON v Wait for Windows 95 to start up ü When Windows 95 starts up, it finds the new printer and displays the New Hardware Found message, shown below. ü If a different message displays, click Cancel and then use the Add Printer Wizard to install the photo printer software. See page 10 of the HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer User’s Guide for instructions. Note: If no message displays, use the Add Printer Wizard to install the photo printer software. See the User’s Guide for instructions. St Steep 5 (c (coontinue nuedd) w Insert the HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer CD x Follow the instructions on the screen ü Make sure Driver from Disk is selected, then click OK. The Install From Disk message displays. ü Type in the drive letter of your computer’s CD-ROM (on most systems this is the D:\ drive). If you are not sure of the drive letter, use Browse to locate the CD-ROM drive. ü Click OK to continue. ü The Add Printer Wizard screen displays. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. ü At the end of the installation, if you have a modem, you can use online registration to register your photo printer. St anc ag Steep 6: PPrrint a PPeerf rfoorm rmanc ancee PPag agee Use the Performance Page to be sure the photo printer is set up and printing correctly. In the future, you may also use the Performance Page to determine if a photo cartridge is out of ink or needs to be cleaned. ü Double-click the HP Photo Printer Toolbox icon on your Windows 95 desktop. ü Select the Maintenance tab. ü Click Print a Performance Page. Tip: You can use the Toolbox How Do I... and The Problem Is... tabs to find help any time you have a question about your photo printer. Where do I ggoo ffrrom hheere? User’s Guide - The HP PhotoSmart Photo Printer User’s Guide includes additional setup information (in case you have any questions). It also explains how to use your new photo printer to get the expected results. HP Photo Printing Sampler Kit - To help you get started using your photo printer, this kit contains some sample HP PhotoSmart papers, as well as instructions for printing a sample project. Online Help - The HP PhotoSmart photo printer’s online Help system is your complete guide to using the photo printer. You can view Help from the Windows 95 Start menu by choosing Programs, HP PhotoSmart, Photo Printer Help File. Toolbox - The HP PhotoSmart photo printer’s Toolbox provides printer status and “how-to” information as well as access to maintenance functions. Additional Software - Your HP PhotoSmart photo printer includes software that you can use for creating projects to print on your photo printer. For instructions on installing this software, see the software’s documentation. Hewlet t-P ac imi wlett-P t-Pac ackkard LLimi imitted Warran antty St Staatement HP Product Duration of Limited Warranty Software Photo Cartridges Photo Printer A. 90 Days 90 Days 1 Year Extent of Limited Warranty 1. Hewlett-Packard (HP) warrants to the end-user customer that the above HP products will be free from defects in materials and workmanship, for a specified time after the date of purchase by the customer. The duration of this limited warranty is stated above. Certain additional conditions and limitations of HP’s warranty are stated in the online Help. Those conditions and limitations include: a. For software products, the warranty applies only to the media upon which the product is recorded; and b. HP does not warrant the operation of any product to be uninterrupted or error-free. 2. HP’s limited warranty covers only those defects which arise as a result of normal use of the product, and do not apply to any: a. Improper or inadequate maintenance; b. Software or interfacing not supplied by HP; c. Unauthorized modification or misuse; d. Operation outside the product’s environmental specifications, including duty cycle abuse or use of a mechanical switchbox without a designated surge protector; e. Use of non-supported printing media or memory boards; or f. Improper site preparation or maintenance. 3. For HP printer products, the use of a non-HP print cartridge or a refilled print cartridge does not affect either the warranty to the customer or any HP support contract with the customer. However, if printer failure or damage is attributable to the use of a non-HP or refilled print cartridge, HP will charge its standard time and materials charges to service the printer for the particular failure or damage. 4. If any software media product or print cartridge product proves defective during the applicable warranty period, and if the product is covered HP’s warranty, the customer shall return the product for replacement. 5. If HP receives, during the applicable warranty period, notice of a defect in a hardware product which is covered by HP’s warranty, HP shall either repair or replace the product, at its option. Any replacement product may be either new or like-new, provided that it has functionality at least equal to that of the product being replaced. 6. If HP is unable to repair or replace, as applicable, a defective product which is covered by HP’s warranty, HP shall, within a reasonable time after being notified of the defect, refund the purchase price for the product, provided the customer returns the product. Specific information regarding product returns is contained in the online Help. 8. This Limited Warranty Statement gives the customer specific legal rights. The customer may also have other rights which vary from state to state in the United States, from province to province in Canada, and from country to country elsewhere in the world. B. Limitations of Warranty 1. NEITHER HP NOR ANY OF ITS THIRD PARTY SUPPLIERS MAKES ANY OTHER WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO HP PRODUCTS. HP AND ITS THIRD PARTY SUPPLIERS SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. 2. To the extent that this Limited Warranty Statement is inconsistent with the law of the locality where the customer uses the HP product, this Limited Warranty Statement shall be deemed modified to be consistent with such local law. Under such local law, certain limitations of this Limited Warranty Statement may not apply to the customer. For example, some states in the United States as well as some governments outside the United States (including provinces in Canada), may: a. Preclude the disclaimers and limitations in this Warranty Statement from limiting the statutory rights of a consumer (e.g., Australia and the United Kingdom); b. Otherwise restrict the ability of a manufacturer to make such disclaimers or impose such limitations; or c. Grant the customer additional warranty rights, specify the duration of implied warranties which the manufacturer cannot disclaim, or not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts. 3. To the extent allowed by local law, the remedies provided in this Warranty Statement are the customer’s sole and exclusive remedies. C. Limitations of Liability 1. EXCEPT FOR THE OBLIGATIONS SPECIFICALLY SET FORTH IN THIS WARRANTY STATEMENT, IN NO EVENT SHALL HP BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER BASED ON CONTRACT, TORT, OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY AND WHETHER ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
