HP Smart Array P400 Data sheet The latest addition to a new generation of SAS Smart Array controllers, the HP SA-P400 once again raises the standards of HP performance, offering mission-critical reliability in a flexible and easy-to-use RAID solution. The HP Smart Array P400 (SA-P400) is HP’s first PCI Express (PCIe) Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) RAID controller, providing new levels of performance and reliability for HP servers through its support of the latest SCSI technology and advanced RAID capabilities. Features and benefits Customers making the transition from Parallel SCSI to Serial Attached SCSI will experience significant performance benefits, greater scalability and more flexibility as a result of the improved technology. SAS has been developed based on the SCSI technologies used today and adds the flexibility to utilize SAS or Serial ATA (SATA) drives which are now available in both small form factor (SFF) and 3.5” form factors. • 3.0 Gb/s SAS / 1.5 Gb/s SATA The HP Smart Array P400 (SA-P400) controller was developed to meet the demands of enterprise storage environments while providing mission-critical reliability and high performance. High performance Combining high-performance SAS and HP’s Smart Array controller architecture sets new boundaries of industry performance expectations • Supports eight SAS ports boosting total SAS bandwidth to 24 Gb/s; provides nearly four times the available bandwidth of the HP Smart Array 6402 • x8 PCI Express I/O • Expander support • Performance memory architecture, with 256 MB (40-bit) DDR2-533 RAM standard – Battery Backed Write Cache (BBWC) and 512 MB (72-bit) upgrade options. • Supports 32 LUNs and >2 TB* *>2 TB support will be available by firmware upgrade post launch. The Smart Array family provides a superior level of consistency and upgradeability with industry unique features such as GUI-based configuration, management and diagnostic software tools; common data formats between generations of products; and data migration between servers and external storage enclosures. Data compatibility Data compatibility between models of HP Smart Array Controllers means you can easily upgrade to future HP Smart Array SAS products to get higher performance, capacity and availability. HP protects your storage solution investment through the use of compatible data formats between successive generations of HP Smart Array products. Increased availability Provides increased server uptime by providing advanced storage functionality: Fault recovery Minimizes downtime, reconstructs data and facilitates a quick recovery from drive failure. • Recovery ROM—this unique feature provides redundancy to protect from ROM image corruption. A new version of firmware will be flashed to both a primary and secondary location in the controller ROM. If either ROM image is ever corrupted, the controller will continue to boot from the redundant image location. • Online Array Expansion with BBWC • On-Line Spares—up to two spare drives can be installed prior to drive failure. If a failure occurs, recovery begins with an On-Line Spare and data is reconstructed automatically. • Logical Drive Capacity Extension with BBWC • Mirror splitting and recombining • Global Online Spare Ease of use Consistency and upgrade ability make the Smart Array family unique in the industry: • Online RAID Level Migration (between any RAID level) with BBWC • Pre-Failure Warranty • Stripe size migration with BBWC • Online drive firmware upgrade Fault prevention The following features offer detection of possible failures before they occur, allowing preventative action to be taken: • Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T)—first developed at HP—detects possible hard disk failure, allowing replacement of the component before failure occurs. • Common data format between generations of products • Data migration occurs between servers and external storage enclosures • Full size and low profile brackets ship with the controller for flexibility Note: On-Line Spares can only be used with RAID level 1, 1+0, 5, and 6 (ADG). Note: mirror splitting and recombining can only be used on RAID 1. • Dynamic Sector Repairing continually performs background surface scans on the hard disk drives during inactive periods and automatically remaps bad sectors, helping to ensure data integrity. 2 HP Smart Array P400 Technical specifications HP Smart Array P400 PCI bus PCIe x8 PCI peak data transfer rate 2 Gb/s Protocol support 3.0 Gb/s SAS / 1.5 Gb/s SATA SCSI peak data transfer rate 3 Gb/s per port Channels/ports 8 SAS ports Connectors (external/internal) 0/2 Drives supported (max) 18 Cache 256 MB DDR2-533 RAM with upgradeable BBWC, also upgradeable to 512 MB BBWC RAID support 0,1, 1+0, 5 RAID 6 (ADG) available with BBWC upgrade Ordering information Part number/SKU Product name Description 405132-B21 HP Smart Array P400 Controller/256 8 port SAS RAID controller with 256 MB 411064-B21 HP Smart Array P400 Controller/512 8 port SAS RAID controller with 512 MB and BBWC 405148-B21 512 MB DDR2 BBWC Upgrade option 383280-B21 BBWC Upgrade Upgrade option for the P400/256 to add RAID 6 with ADG 417836-B21 HP Smart Array P400 Battery Attach Kit Kit contains a 24” battery cable and adhesive material for installing a battery into the following servers if the P400 is integrated outside of the factory – ML310 G3, DL320 G4, ML350 G5, DL380 G5 (full-size slot) and DL580 G4 Financial Services HP Financial Services provides innovative financing and financial asset management programs to help you cost-effectively acquire, manage, and ultimately retire your HP solutions.
