Fullmetal Alchemist Word Count: 100 “Daddy, daddy! It’s almost finished!” yelled the young boy from across the room. Edward looked up from the old alchemy book to glance at the boy’s progress at the workbench. “Well done, son,” Edward said with a smile. “Bring it here.” The boy brought his creation to his father, setting it in his callused hands. It was a clock of walnut wood. The rum around the clock face was a worn bronze. The time had still not been set. “All I need is the time,” the boy stated. Edward pulled out his state alchemist pocket watch, remembering. “11:07 AM, Roy.” 4 Eligible Entries “The price of time” by Kohaku Niwa Assassin’s Creed Word Count: 100 Tick, tick, tick… I wait in the shadows. Tick, tick, my hood hides my smirk as I step from my pirch. Tick… tick… I leap off the platform, surging toward the ground. Tick… tick… Blade meets flesh, as crimson waves dance around me. Tick… tic – Slowly I slink back into the shadows as bodies swarm the square. Turning, I see a small flower. As I pick it up, a girl reaches for it, a sweet smile on her face. Then she sees the commotion and she runs past me. Petals crumble in my hand. This is the price I pay. “I Wish Forever Was Real” by Vida Tonnya Black Bird Word Count: 100 The sun is setting, another day lost among thousands. One day closer to the inevitable. Time. Time is my rival, my enemy, my curse. Time takes away what it gave to me at birth, feels no confliction about killing me. Lord Kyo brought the Senka Maiden to the village only yesterday, and I am eternally grateful. That alone brought Zenki here, is the reason why he holds me so gently now, reading an excerpt from ‘Dante’s Inferno’ to me as I fall into the darkness of sleep. Time will soon take this peace away from me forever. Time is cruel 5 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Gift of Time” by Shadow Oblivion Black Butler Word Count: 100 Someone had been in his office. This displeased William greatly. Grell flounced into the office unannounced, smiling widely, “Morning William!” William watched as the other reaper started to rummage around. “Will, you didn’t see it!” Grell whined. “What?” “This!” Grell triumphantly held up a small clock, surrounded by a wooden frame, and set it on the desk. Then, Grell moved forward and planted a kiss on William’s cheek, leaving quickly before he could be reprimanded, “Happy Birthday Will!” William stared at the innocent looking clock, wondering how Grell had known that he had been thinking of getting a new one. “Memorable time” by Brittany H. Clannad Word Count: 100 The sun was setting. As a soft breeze blew past his cheek, Okazaki sighed. The past year seemed to be a rush of events. Realizing how time had passed, he rushed home to see Nagisa. Upon arrival into the apartment, he noticed a thing he had not seen for quit awhile; a clock from his father’s home. Memories flashed before him: his father pushing him, the lonely and empty nights he cried. Quickly, the memories dissipated as he saw her smiling face. “Welcome home, Okazaki.” Suddenly, time didn’t matter. Good or bad, the had more than memories. They had eachother. 6 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Single Digit: One day to the Next” by Mechalich Claymore Word Count: 100 At the first bell Jessica drew her sword. Twelve rings to midnight, twelve yoma; live or die only one would stand when the day was done. They came. She spun, whipping claymore past ogrish claws and killing fangs, striking. Two rings, three kills, by her whirling she sliced. Yoki filled yellow eyes. Nine rings, one took her arm. She took his head. Limbs would regenerate. Eleven rings, and one remained. Jessica’s blade wheeled overhead. Two halves fell, severed. The clock struck twelve. There was only a silver-eyed witch surviving. A new day begins, Whirling Jessica smiled through demon blood. “Rocket Man” by Tsugiri Cowboy Bebop Word Count: 100 Spike had almost drifted into sleep when the radio began to play an old Elton John tune. It brought him to another place and time where memories petrified in youthful joy and reminiscent gloom whirled slowly in his mind. How lonely a journey it was through space, to abandon his heart while his body soldiered on. Only deathly cold and darkness offered him companionship here. Life went on, but it seemed as though his clock had stopped, moving neither forward nor backward. To travel, to leave behind the present and the past – now that would be a truly liberating thing. 7 Eligible Entries (cont.) “The Moment at Hand” by Whisperwill Fullmetal Alchemist Word Count: 100 Was not the little clock sitting on the army truck’s dashboard beautiful? The polished wood encased the inching gears… and the gears drove the hands… and the hands moved inexorably forward. Their time was running out. Yes. Solf J. Kimblee raised his hands up. The moon on his left. The sun on his right. Darkness on his left. Light on his right. And death locked within both of them. He inhaled deeply – the air over Ishbal was heavy with the perfume of freshly-spilled blood. He waited. Now, let the screams arise. Let the carnage commence. Let the song… begin. “Getting the Timepiece” by A.R. Pulver GetBackers/Crono Crusade Word Count: 100 A thousand antique shops in America and Ban finally found the damn thing. Holding up the walnut-encased timepiece, busted for what could have been decades, he mumbled, “Three grand to get this piece of junk… and I still feel underpaid.” This was it, though. It looked like a plain old relic, but the description matched perfectly, down to the carved engraving underneath: “In Loving Memory Of Our Dear Cosette.” Looking at it closely, it was indeed dead; nobody had the expertise to get this thing running again. Strange that the convent specified, “Do not wind it… just in case.” 8 Eligible Entries (cont.) “The Bell Tolls” by Toby Haibane Renmei Word Count: 100 Tonight Kana will furiously hammer at broken gears instead of mourning. She’s not supposed to mourn; the so called “day of flight” is meant to be a time of reverent joy for the departed, but Kana just can’t make heads or tails of it. The bolts in her hands, the grease on her clothes, they make sense, but the tolling of the bells, the passing of a friend, Kana has a hard time thinking about them, things she can’t touch or fix. So she stays in the clock tower, shutting off the bells and making some sense of the world. “She could be better.” by twilight junkie Hellsing Word Count: 100 It was the blasphorous clock, of all things, that balanced them out. He had to hand it to whatever mechanism responsible for putting her (an unstoppable force) and himself (an immovable, unalterable object) on a collision course. It was inexplicable. Her, the Hellsing heir who so competently took the weight of the world with her namesake. She was a fraction of his age, seconds old compared to his many, many years. Still, he thought her his equal. Because, he mused to himself, had time passed equally… had she been give as many seconds, she would be a far better being. 9 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Stuck in the Past” by Sarah P. Hetalia: Axis Powers Word Count: 100 Clocks. Clocks tell time. They can push back or forward. But to Japan, it seemed he was stuck in the past. Japan was sitting outside when he realized this. He thought to himself, “Why does everyone else have such nice things? America has tons of video games, televisions, and cell phones.” Japan sat and thought very hard that day until he came up with a plan. He was going to steal America’s television. Japan skipped the Allies’ meeting the next day and went to America’s place. He broke through the window, stole the TV, and got out. Japan thought, “Finally!” “Time to Think” by Ree Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Word Count: 100 Tsuna stared at the ticking clock. At twelve past one, he was to fake his death. The Vongola Famiglia would suffer many casualties due to his duplicity, and his guardians would lose hope once he died. However, if he did not pretend to die, his universe was doomed to be conquered and all of Vongola destroyed. “Damned if I do, damned if I don’t,” he muttered. A quick glance at the clock, and he let out a sigh. If only he had more time to think… “Sawada Tsunayoshi, it is time.” “Never enough time… Hibari-san, take me to my death?” 10 Eligible Entries (cont.) “The Wind in the Heather” by 4421 Kino’s Journey Word Count: 100 There are those who journey without motion. The traveler comes over the hill at an angle, leaning the big motorcycle into the wind as if taking a sharp curve. I offer her dinner. “Would you like me to fix that clock?” It sits on my mantelpiece, next to the faded photo of the small grey mare. “I already have,” I answer gently. “There is no danger it will move again. It is my still point in a hasty world.” “I don’t believe in still points,” she tells me. “How do you travel without one?” I ask. She has no answer. “Fighting the Clock” by Oli The Olive Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Word Count: 100 Navi was finally asleep. Instead of joining her, Link sat below the stars, pondering his fate. She was a strict time-keeper, always crying, “Hey, listen!” annoy him into moving on in the quest. He rarely listened, which gave her enough stress to make her sick, but he didn’t feel guilty. He could feel his life ticking away, each heartbeat a resounding blow from the cruelly impartial sages’ mystical clock. They had measured out his lifetime eons ago. Well, he wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of his cooperation. Navi’s cries be damned, he would live by HIS clock, not theirs. 11 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Time Unending” by Evan C. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Word Count: 100 “Thirty one seconds” Nagato thought to herself upon glancing at the clock on the desk, “until it begins.” “In twenty three seconds it will be two weeks in the past and events will replay themselves with small variations.” “Will we work in the call center this time? It is impossible to know as no pattern has emerged.” “I will continue to observe and await a pattern, only then can an end to this temporal loop be derived.” “But what if no pattern emerges? How long can I continue to function in this matter without deterioration?” “Three seconds… will it end?” “Time and Tear Drops” by Diver590 Naruto Word Count: 100 Every second that ticked by meant that Sasuke was taking one step further into darkness. Sakura’s tired eyes looked at the clock above her head. One in the morning. She sighed. If only she could stop time, then maybe it would be easier to bring Sasuke back. But if Naruto couldn’t, who could? Sasuke had been enveloped in an evil of no return. Now that Sasuke had killed Itachi, she didn’t even know his motives anymore. Where was he? Why couldn’t he just come back? Sakura bowed her head, not caring that the clock above her saw every tear drop. “What Has Been Lost” by Muffins-Weasley Naruto Word Count: 100 Tobi found himself watching the clock. 11:07. Four minutes, and he could make his wish. He sighed softly and looked around the room. None of Deidara’s stuff had been moved since his death, mostly because those who had managed to remain alive feared what the “good boy” might do if they attempted to move it. Tobi looked back at the antique clock. 11:10. He stared at the long hand, willing it to move. 11:11. He made his wish. I wish that sempai was here. He repeated it for the full minute, at every wishing hour, daily. When would it come true? 12 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Time” by pseudonymph Naruto Word Count: 100 Ever since Sasuke left, Naruto had always been focused on time. When Cell Seven had been together, there was always time for another mission, another bowl of Ramen, another fight with Sasuke. Time had stretched on forever then. Now, four years later, Naruto knew that the time that he had had with his comrade in arms had been too short. And the time Naruto had to bring his friend back was dwindling. Like a clock that ticked to the beating of his own heart, Naruto could almost hear the time fleeing. But Naruto was never going to let time win. “An illusion of time” by The Wolf Sannin Naruto Word Count: 100 Sakura couldn’t help herself from looking at the clock. She knew it was broken. It didn’t matter what it said anyway. She knew he would be back. He would always be back. And no one would ever be there to help her. The village had been destroyed when the akatsuki had attacked. Everyone died. Kakashi-sempai, Ino-chan, Tsunade-sensei, even… even Naruto. Sasuke-kun had lost to Orochimaru. Even Sasuke-kun had died. Maybe the broken clock gave her an illusion of the passing time. But it didn’t matter. He was coming. The door opened. A grin. “Hello Sakura.” Sakura glanced at him. “Itachi.” 13 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Waiting for Battle” by Derek Wayne Pokémon Word Count: 100 The one-eyed Sneasel intended to keep the appointment. The others had fled, disloyal, undedicated. Tick. He checked the engraved watch, the sole keepsake he’d bothered to recover from his master’s corpse, now frozen on an ice trail miles from humanity’s warmth. Sneasel would win the scheduled duel without him. Old bite-marks of rock and steel, never-healed burn-scabs, gnawed at him. He would fight regardless, compelled by inherited ambition. He would fight alone. He needed no master’s words. The words were already in his heart: Together Forever. Tick. He glanced back to the griseous horizon, and waited. “Seconds Counting” by Trickster’s Love Princess Tutu Word Count: 100 Tick-tock-tick. Time. He needed more time. What he had left was slipping through his fingers too fast to catch hold of. The clock ticked on, inexorable and unfeeling. Tick-tock scritch scritch. His pen raced across the page. Words of hope, love and light meant to save those most precious to him. The gas lamp guttered as the story fought him. The pull of tragedy was too strong. Time was running out. Blood dripping from his hand the writer stood. “Duck!” he cried as her light of hope flooded the world. The clock had stopped. Time stood still. 14 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Sensation” by WiseAbsol Rebuild of Evangelion Word Count: 100 The Commander and Ikari-kun were coming to dinner. As Rei cleaned her apartment, boiled the water, and laid out the dishes, she felt a crawling sensation in her stomach. It grew as she chopped the vegetables, but her hands remained still – long practice and superficial cuts had taught her well. Was this nervousness? Excitement? She was learning of emotions, but she couldn’t name her own. There was a knock on the door. She glanced at the clock – they were early. The sensation spiked. Rei opened the door… The Commander and Ikari-kun were not coming to dinner. The sensation fell away. “Heals All Wounds” by waterbringer Rurouni Kenshin Word Count: 100 It was the scent of plum blossoms along the road, the smell that always marked her that stopped the drifting swordsman in his tracks. He could see streams of blood staining once clean snow, felt his blade piercing through her flesh and bone. Felt the same heartbreak, the same choking guilt, the same aching desire to see her again. ‘Live.’ Saw her smile as she gazed at her husband, her murderer. Heard her command to continue on without her. The swordsman smiled sadly. ‘It’s only been a decade. Not nearly long enough.’ A lone figure wandered away into the night. 15 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Y u no can finish transformation?” by Dana G. Sailor Moon Word Count: 100 “Bwahahahaha! Soon, I can haz all the cheezburgers!” The generic villain of the week, LOLcatty, grinned wickedly at the young group of teenaged girls who had been eating and giggling at the fast food restaurant. “Sailor Moon! Transform!” one of the girls shouted out, clutching her cute transformation stick. The girls were enveloped by pretty magic sparkles, twirling around, pretty much naked. The villain glanced over at the wooden clock sitting on a nearby shelf. The girls had been transforming for 6 minutes! “Well… whatever…” LOLcatty used her ultimate attack, and from that day forward, all the cheezburgers were hers. “Snot” by Sha-chan Saiyuki Word Count: 100 The monocle clad man cleaned with a feather duster in one hand, he swept at a small antique clock that stood on a shelf, an unhealthy amount of disgusting dead skin particles drifted to his drunk friend Gojyo who slurped on a warm beer. “Man Hakkai! That’s sick nasty.” “Sick nasty?” questioned Sanzo. “Ah, it seems to be something the kids say nowadays to represent something of filthy or disgusting nature,” Hakkai informed. “That’s stupid,” the blond priest replied. As that said, Goku caught such a wiff he sneezed and green snot dirtied the room with nose junk. “Sick nasty.” 16 Eligible Entries (cont.) “Tick Tock; waiting for the madness” by Akane Hikari Soul Eater Word Count: 100 Stein sat in his chair, staring at the clock and the minutes ticking by. Time had never felt so important, since it was now running out. The seconds, the minutes, the hours, all seemed so very valuable now. The madness was slowly consuming him; minute by agonizing minute. Stein thought about how time usually seemed to slow to a crawl when you were staring at a clock; but it wasn’t so for him. He deeply wished he could slow time by watching the clock, watching the countdown on his sanity. Seconds, minutes, hours passed as he waited for the end. “Speed’s Proposition” by Toph’s great-aunt Speed Racer Word Count: 100 “I promised myself I would propose to Trixie at 5:00 PM,” thought Speed as he gazed at the mounted clock on the dashboard of his Mach 5. But now Speed had a tire to change and a girl to save. In the distance, a ballerina was pirouetting across a tightrope and a bad, bearded man with a heavy Italian accent was following her, waving a gun menacingly. “Karina, you owe me thousands for dance lessons, and your father used the wrong viscosity oil changing my oil!” Meanwhile, Trixie sat at a picnic table waiting for Speed. “Oooooooh, Speed!” she fumed. “Seething for All Good Things” by Avatar of Bahamut Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Word Count: 100 He couldn’t stand it anymore. Kiryu was sprawled out on the dusty cot, staring at a small wooden clock. It stopped working years ago and was enveloped in soot. He hated that clock. It reminded him of time. The time that was taken from him, the time he wasted waiting to take his revenge… There was a saying about how all good things come to those who wait for it. How much longer would he wait to be satisfied? Too long. Yusei had time, he thought. All that time he stole from him! And soon… he would take it back! 17 Other Entries “A Not-So-Clever Plan” by Saree-chan Azumanga Daioh Word Count: 105 It was a hot day in Japan. “This heat is KILLING ME!” Ms. Yukari yelled during a lesson. “Let’s forget about this stuff and take a break.” She climbed on her desk and fell asleep. “Excuse me, Ms. Yukari, we should really move on with class,” Chiyo-chan whispered. “AHHH I’M AWAKE!” screamed Ms. Yukari. She looked at the clock on her desk. “Oh look at that, time to go home!” She sprinted out of the classroom. “But it’s only 10 o’clock…” Chiyo-chan said. “She planned this, didn’t she?” mumbled Yomi. And from their classroom they could hear Ms. Yukari in the distance. “SO LONG SUCKERS!” “Time Was Never on Duo’s Side” by Princess Sarah Em Gundam Wing Word Count: 99 Duo sighed as he looked at the clock once again, time was never on his side. In only one hour he would have to leave on another mission that would leave Hilde alone. He hated doing so, he felt like he was leaving part of when he did it and it hurt him so. How could he expect her to love him when she had to watch him to board Deathscythe with no promise of return. Duo silently walked to their bed where Hilde peacefully slept and he felt like crying. Time was truly not on Duo Maxwell’s side. “Henry’s Clocks” by Luna ML Hell Girl Word Count: 98 You will never meet a man as content to listen to the ticking of a clock as Benjamin Leroy Henry. Not long ago a young man had the gall to open a store adjacent to “Henry’s Clocks” that offered new-fashioned battery powered clocks and restorations/conversions “for cheep.” The boy’s conversion of old clocks to new shells that tell time pained Henry. So he asked his nephew for help. He summoned that pale girl that dragged the brat to his fate in exchange for his own soul. So he listens to each tick for this is revenge. 18 Other Entries (cont.) “Times trickery thoughts take toll” by Exsania Paradise Kiss Word Count: 95 “George, I’ve missed you!” “Then why didn’t you come with me?” I pull away my eyes with worry that he might hate me now. I look down at my hands shaken at the thought. Everything is silent, and all I can hear is Tic Toc. Time is mocking me when we’re apart, and teasing me when we’re together. Second by second I want to kiss your lips, and whisper sweetness in your ear. “I love you George! I let time play tricks on me, I shouldn’t have. I’m sorry…” Then my lips themselves tasted his. “Flickering Time” by Alexis H. Tales of the Abyss Word Count: 95 Luke stared at the clock as time ticked away. His hand grew transparent, then went back to his solid form. His life ticked away like his Fonons. He couldn’t believe he was dying. Every tick of the clock reminded him of the sensation. What could he do? Did anyone care if he died? His life was fading; would anyone care? He wanted to live, but if he was going to die, why not try? Luke made his final decision. He would sacrifice himself for them. Luke Fon Fabre would die, so they could all live. End of entries for “Iron Pen” 2011. This file is the property of Anime Twin Cities, Inc.
