Beak-proof cable – extra-strong FTTA connections 04/07/2013
A cockatoo sits on an antenna cable and uses it to whet its powerful beak. Its efforts to bite through the cable are, however, in vain because it is a specially reinforced antenna cable. To avoid mobile communication connections in Australia being crippled by cockatoos' instinct to gnaw and play, an extra cable sheath protects the interior of the hybrid cables from HUBER+SUHNER.
In addition to the high solar load, outdoor cables in Australia also need to withstand the powerful beaks of cockatoos. These parrots love to scramble around on the suspended cables. Cockatoos are very playful and curious parrots that mainly live in Australia. These sociable birds are sometimes perceived as a plague there because they tend to gather in large swarms, devouring whole cornfields and making a fair amount of noise in the evenings. The birds are also unpopular with Australian mobile carriers. In addition to perching in trees, they also like to play and scramble around on freely suspended cables. With their extremely powerful, hooked beaks, they can damage or even cut through cables, thus interrupting mobile coverage.
Special cables for Australia's mobile communication market Expanding the cellular networks to accommodate 4th generation LTE with FTTA (Fiber to the Antenna) system solutions involves fairly high investments for mobile network operators, which explains their great interest in cockatooproof wiring. Especially for the Australian market, HUBER+SUHNER has therefore designed even more resistant hybrid cable systems, featuring an additional cable sheath. It is so tough that even cockatoos cannot damage it. To make sure that installers can still process these extra-strong cables, thin, but very strong, special threads are inserted under the sheath where they effectively serve as a ripcord for opening the cable. In addition, the lines are protected with ribbed plastic hoses. As a result, cockatoos do not stand a chance of biting through the fiber optic cables.

The extra-strong, pre-assembled FTTA cable systems from HUBER+SUHNER can be opened without any problems thanks to a special thread insert.
Global potential This specific development to meet customer needs is proving successful: two major mobile network operators in Australia have already opted for the parrot-safe, pre-assembled plug and play cable systems from HUBER+SUHNER. And since damage to overhead lines is not just caused by birds, but also by monkeys and rodents, there is great scope for special solutions from the FTTA market leader in other countries. Conversion of mobile communication to FTTA systems is progressing at full speed globally.
