INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR HURRICANE 5000 NEMA 4X
HxC200/400/600 Models 1. Preparation for Install of Surge Suppressor a.
Verify the system voltage and wiring configuration is the same as the enclosed model HxC200/400/600 by checking it against the product label located on the front cover of the enclosure. b. Review the installation area to ensure the proper space is available to properly mount and install the HxC200/400/600. The enclosure should be mounted no more than 3 feet away from the distribution panel. c. Check that the buildings facility grounding system meets all NEC & CEC requirements as well as local codes. A low resistance ground system is essential to the proper functioning of any surge suppression device. The soil resistance level should be no more than 25 ohms. This can be verified by performing a soil resistivity test.

2. Location of Surge Suppressor a.
For Service Entrance applications, install the Suppressor at the main distribution panel on the load side after the main disconnect. Ensure that the enclosure’s hinged door can be opened and closed without interference from the surrounding area. This is to provide internal access to the device if necessary. IMPORTANT! Remember to keep conductor lead length to a minimum; 3ft or less. b. For Feeder/Sub-panel applications, install the Suppressor directly adjacent to the panelboard. Ensure that the enclosure’s hinged door can be opened and closed without interference from the surrounding area. This is to provide internal access to the device if necessary. IMPORTANT! Remember to keep conductor lead length to a minimum; 3ft or less.
3. Wiring of Surge Suppressor a.
TURN OFF the power to the distribution panel where the model HxC200/400/600 will be installed. b. Install a circuit breaker to feed the model HxC200/400/600 surge suppressor. This will allow safety personnel to remove power from the device in order to diagnose or service the unit. In addition, the device incorporates internal fusing, UL & CSA approved, that will protect against short circuit fault conditions within the unit. notes: i. A time delay fused disconnect switch can be used in lieu of circuit breaker. ii. A circuit breaker is not required for installation of model HxC200/400/600’s with integral disconnect switches. c. Install either a rigid or flexible metal conduit between the model HxC200/400/600 and the distribution panel. d. Run wires from the distribution panelboard to the terminals of the model HxC200/400/600. e. Strip the ends of the wire and terminate within the model HxC200/400/600 terminals and panelboard.

Ensure proper color codes:
Wire Color Ground Green or Green/Yellow Neutral White Hot Red Hot Black Hot Blue g. Tighten and recheck all connections. h. If remote monitoring is employed, connect the form “C” contacts to the building monitor system or independent alarm, i.e. addressable relay. Contact relays will accept up to 1A/220VAC. The dry contact terminals are N.O. (normally open), N.C. (normally closed) and COM (common). Alarm Conditions – Contact Status

i. To run a test of the relay contact by turning MAIN power OFF and then back ON. Switch MAIN power ON. Check all front panel indicator lamps for illumination.
4. Phase Connections a.
Wire TVSS to Service Panel - Minimize conductor lead length by cutting back excess cabling. Recommended lead length is less than 3 feet. In addition, conductors should be tightly taped together for the entire run. Refer to figure 1 for connecting surge suppressor to AC power network. b. Circuit Breakers - A circuit breaker should be coordinated to protector wire size. The primary function of this breaker is to provide a means of removing power from the unit for maintenance. The circuit breakers will not trip during normal surge suppression since the response time of the circuit breaker is much longer than the duration of a transient voltage. Wire Size #12 AWG #10 AWG #8 AWG #6 AWG
Circuit Breaker 20A rms 30A rms 50A rms 60A rms
notes: i. Check wiring before applying power. c. Fused Disconnect - A fused disconnect switch, either integral or external, may be utilized as an alternative to a circuit breaker.
