Hydrogen in road transport The hydrogen refueling network in Sweden expands from Malmö to Stockholm and Gothenburg Hydrogen’s way to the road Hydrogen has grown to be an attractive and, not to mention, important component in the transition to a more sustainable road transport system. Through EU-funded programs and private initiatives many national and international constellations have been formed, working mainly with the introduction to road transport. Lately a significant number of countries in Europe have presented “national implementation plans” for hydrogen. In addition many have also started to build networks of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) in order to facilitate the roll out of the fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV:s). OEM:s are in an initial state of the roll out of their vehicles but are expected to ramp up their production gradually. In 2018, nine of the largest car manufacturers will have at least one FCEV model each on the market. In Sweden, component suppliers, industries, municipalities, consultancies, agencies, universities, institutes, etc. are active in the growing market. A scenario map regarding the HRS development in Europe by 2020 is seen in the picture to the left1. Hydrogen Like battery electric vehicles, fuel cell cars are zero emission vehicles. Only water vapor is discharged from the FCEV when driving. Due to the possibility of keeping the hydrogen production CO2 lean, FCEV:s could reach climate neutrality even on a system level. Their main strengths are that they fulfill important qualities such as driving range, short refueling time, and emission free during operation and high efficiency. Some industries in Sweden also have excess streams of hydrogen as by product, which could supply several thousands of vehicles. General production paths and end use possibilities of hydrogen Climate driven market development Sweco leads the EU TEN-T HIT-2-Corridors project which 1) produces implementation plans for hydrogen as transport fuel as input for policies in Finland, Poland, Belgium and Riga, 2) place hydrogen refueling stations in Stockholm and in Gothenburg and Voikoski (FI), and 3) includes strategic analyses on integration of hydrogen in European core road corridors [hit-2-corridors.eu]. The strong climate targets for 2050 and the national goal of a fossil free vehicle fleet in 2030 will be supported by the introduction of hydrogen as a fuel. Hydrogen is a complement to electricity charging for cars, buses, and light trucks where the functionality in pure electric vehicles are limited.
