The protocol converter will allow existing RS-485 interface scanners to be attached to the USB terminals. It should support 4696/4697/4698 data streams for flatbed scanners. The protocol converter will also support hand-held scanners to include the IBM 1520 Hand-Held Scanner, the IBM Hand-Held Bar Code Reader (HHBCR), and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) hand-held scanners that emulate these IBM models. The current design of the XAC protocol converter supports only Port 9-attached hand-held scanners; the IBM 1520 scanner is a Port 5-attached scanner and will not connect through the XAC converter. OEM scanners that emulate the IBM 1520 with Port 9 attachment should be supported through this device.

The JavaPOS drivers are now included with the operating system. A separate download is not required.
Long File Names The 4690 Operating System has a DOS-FAT-based file system. This file system limits file and directory names to eight characters with an optional three-character extension. It further limits the maximum path length for a fully qualified file name to 127 characters. One of the strengths of the Java environment is the ability to run programs on a number of different systems without modification. Long file names will be supported using file, directory, and path lengths and characteristics that are compatible with the expectations of programmers in the Java development community. These names can be used in both the terminal and the controller. 4690 POS-unique file attributes, such as file distribution and shared access, are supported with long file names. Keyed file support with long file names is not supported but current keyed file support is maintained. Long file names are supported by standard functions such as DIR, COPY, RENAME, and DELETE.
Optional Web Browser Support for Java and TCP/IP communications provides the framework for implementing Web browser support at the POS terminal and controller. A pure Java browser running under 4690 OS will allow retailers to develop a new class of HTML-based client applications. An example of such an application would be a Web-based front end to a remote host database system for price lookup and verification. This requirement will be met by the ICESoft e-Lite Browser 4.0 for IBM 4690 Operating System Version 2. This browser will be provided as a separately orderable PRPQ (P85607).
IBM 4690 Operating System V2R3 takes advantage of the USB interface by allowing the flexible addition and removal of devices. This includes dynamic recognition of attached USB devices at terminal IPL and “hot-plugging” for unplug and replug of the same or similar devices.
Enhanced Graphics with 16-Bit Colors
Symbol Wireless Support for IEEE 802.11 Standard
IBM 4690 Operating System Version 2 Release 2 supported graphics resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 with 256 colors. The following additional color depths are now provided: • • •
4690 Operating System V2R3 supports the IEEE 802.11 standard with Symbol wireless adapters. Wireless terminal attachment, however, is not supported for SurePOS 700 terminals.
640x480, 16-bit (32 K or 64 K) color 800x600, 16-bit (32 K or 64 K) color 1024x768, 16-bit (32 K or 64 K) color
VisualAge C and C++/JNI The Java Native Interface (JNI) is the native programming interface for Java that is part of the Java Development Kit (JDK). The JNI allows Java code that runs within a JVM to operate with applications and libraries written in the C/C++ language. In addition, the Invocation API allows you to imbed the JVM into native applications.
JavaPOS 1.4 Java for Point of Sale (JavaPOS) is an industry-standard specification that defines an application program interface for Java programs to access point of sale devices. IBM 4690 Operating System V2R3 supports JavaPOS 1.4 for the following devices: • • • • • • • • • • •
In IBM 4690 Operating System Version 2 Release 1, JNI implementation was based on the runtime libraries used with the WATCOM compiler used for 4690 development. However a more general solution is now provided. The 4690 OS now supports a JNI implementation that is compatible with the IBM VisualAge C and C++ compiler. This offering provides the opportunity to use a new set of development tools — VisualAge C / C + + — and allows them to integrate VisualAge native code with Java.
2x20 displays POS keyboards Cash drawer Scanner 4610 printer Hard totals Scale MSR MICR 4610 Tone indicator Manager′s key lock
The use of the VisualAge compiler is not restricted to just JNI programs. The compiler can be used to create stand-alone C and C++ programs using the VisualAge C and C++ runtime library functions. In addition, the 4690 CAPI interfaces (controller and terminal) as well as the TCP/IP socket interface are also supported.
Supported devices include all RS-485-attached devices currently supported in IBM 4690 Operating System Version 2, as well as USB-attached I/O described under SurePOS 700 Series Point of Sale Hardware. -3-
