Responding to customer requirements, the Magstar 3494 Model B18 Virtual Tape Server (VTS) and the Peer-to-Peer VTS are improved to provide even more benefits. The VTS is designed to be a highly scalable, shareable, high-performing device for storage of most, if not all, of your sequential files. It is well suited for data consolidation, data protection, and interoperability. The Peer-to-Peer VTS provides flexible component placement to facilitate 24 x 7 processing requirements and a solution for disaster tolerance. New features provide the following: • • • • • HP Servers Operating HP-UX: The SCSI Host Attachment feature (#3422) can be used to attach selected HP servers running HP-UX. The VTS Open System Device Drivers feature (#9201) is required and provides the applicable device drivers. The HP-UX Attachment feature (#9210) must also be specified. IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch: The IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch Model S08 or S16 can be used to connect Fibre Channel-capable RS/6000 systems running AIX and selected Sun Microsystems running Sun Solaris through the IBM 2108 SAN Data Gateway to the 3494 Model B18 VTS configured with one or more SCSI Host Attachment features (#3422). For details on supported servers, operating systems, fiber channel host bus adapters, and configurations, refer to the following Web site: Increased performance Expanded capability Standby Virtual Tape Controllers Expanded open system attachments Improved connectivity for Peer-to-Peer VTS Increased Performance ESCON channel performance of the VTS and Peer-to-Peer VTS can be improved by using larger blocksizes up to 256 Kilobytes. Use of larger blocksizes in a VTS allows data rates in excess of 120 MB/sec by reducing the overhead associated with each data transfer. OS/390 Release 10 and later versions provide the required support for BSAM and QSAM access methods. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ sangateway/gatewayspec.htm Improved Connectivity For Peer-to-Peer VTS The IBM 2029 Fiber Saver can now be used to provide connectivity over longer distances between a host system and a 3494 Model AX0 VTC, and between a 3494 Model AX0 VTC and 3494 Model B18 VTS. The maximum end-to-end distance of the host system to Model AX0 ESCON interface, including the Fiber Saver pair length, is 75 km. The maximum end-to-end distance of the Model AX0 to Model B18 ESCON interface, including the Fiber Saver pair length, is 25 km. The VTS and Peer-to-Peer VTS with the Fiber Saver can be used over longer distances for: Peer-to-Peer VTS immediate and deferred mode performance is increased by expanding configurations to allow four or eight 3494 AX0 Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs) in a Peer-to-Peer VTS configuration. The benefit of increased ESCON attachments is a shorter batch window, or expanded usage of the VTS to store even more data. Additional 3590 tape drives can be attached to VTS using the Additional VTS Drives feature (#5237) to allow up to a maximum of 12 tape drives with a VTS and 24 with a Peer-to-Peer VTS. Additional tape drives can improve mount response time by reducing recall waiting time for a tape drive when a requested virtual volume is no longer in tape volume cache. • • Expanded Capability Product Preview The maximum number of virtual tape drives is increased to 128 with the new 64 Additional Virtual Drives feature (#5264). A Peer-to-Peer VTS with eight 3494 Model AX0 VTCs requires 128 virtual tape drives. Additional virtual tape drives allow more jobs to run concurrently and may improve exploitation of the total configuration data rate. Additional VTS features and capabilities planned for future delivery include: • Operational control of a Peer-to-Peer VTS by a Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex  (GDPS) GDPS, IBM′s premier offering for disaster toleration, will be enhanced to integrate the Peer-to-Peer VTS using new Peer-to-Peer VTS capabilities and extensions to the DFSMS Tape Library Application Interface (CBRXLCS). Using GDPS commands, you will be able to control facets of Peer-to-Peer VTS and have GDPS synchronize critical system data sets after a forced site switchover. 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridges can now be used to store stacked logical volumes. Use of the 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge may reduce the number of 3494 library storage cells required to support the VTS and allow native 3590 applications to store more data in a 3494. Standby Virtual Tape Controllers • An additional 3494 Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame with four 3494 Model AX0 VTCs can be installed as standby for four active Model AX0s in a Peer-to-Peer VTS configuration. The standby Model AX0s at the remote site are intended for use where the VTSs are physically separated to provide disaster backup. If all the Model AX0s at the primary site become unavailable, then, with CE intervention, the remote VTS and the standby Model AX0s can be started in read/write disconnected mode of operation to provide read and write access to volumes stored in the VTS. A host system must be configured and available to the remote site. 101-164 Remote disaster backup and recovery Remote tape vaulting Expanded DFSMS tape library control of Peer-to-Peer VTS operations Peer-to-Peer VTS operations are planned to be customer controlled through the use of the expanded DFSMS Tape Library Application Interface. You will be able to dynamically control the copy mode of operation, input/output (I/O) VTS selection, and copy operations to be enabled/disabled. You can also query virtual device and volume status.
