IBM SurePOS 700 Model E82 offers a high-function alternative for the retail environment with the Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Service operating system preloaded •
Overview The IBM SurePOS 700 Series is the most powerful point-of-sale (POS) solution in the IBM portfolio. The new SurePOS 700 Model E82, a performance model, provides an Intel Pentium 4 531 (3 GHz processor/800 MHz FSB) 64-bit enabled processor, an 80 GB Serial ATA hard drive, RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) technology, 512 MB DDR II base memory (expandable to 2 GB), and 64 MB maximum shared video memory. This high-impact solution helps deliver the speed, availability, and reliability that on demand retailers require. A USB PC keyboard (feature number 3118) is now available for controller or controller/terminal configurations and supported in 4690 and all OS environments. Filler panels for the narrow integrated solution are available in pearl white and iron gray to fill the gap between the printer and display.
Key prerequisites Customer review of the licensing terms for the Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Service operating system. Highlights of the license terms: •
Limited use of office applications (that is, browsers, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail, and word processors) is provided for store management operations only.
The ability to overwrite the installed image is limited to the same Windows operating system release. Customers are not authorized to install a different version of a Microsoft Windows operating system.
A recovery CD is available via feature number that can be ordered with the initial purchase or later as an MES. To order the recovery CD as an MES, you must provide an entitled machine type model and serial number. The recovery CD is not transferable between hardware and should be used only on the machine type model serial number that it is ordered for. The Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment software included with this software may be used for boot, diagnostic, disaster recovery, setup, restoration, emergency services, communications, installation, test, and/or configuration utilities program purposes only.

Enabling remote systems management: IBM Retail Store Solutions provides an in-store and remote systems management solution which can help retailers meet store uptime objectives, reduce IT maintenance times and costs, and deploy new technologies faster. The IBM Remote Management Agent solution helps retailers quickly deploy basic store-level software distribution, configuration, monitoring and event management, and asset information management using IBM Remote Management Agent. When IBM Remote Management Agent is installed on new or existing SurePOS 700 systems, it automatically discovers the system, and enables store-level systems management as well as enterprise management using the IBM Tivoli Automation solutions. IBM Remote Management Agent has a standards-based, open architecture implementation that can also support third-party retail management applications and enterprise systems management tools. This allows retailers to manage the SurePOS 700 at a store level more efficiently than using manual operations and consistently with existing enterprise IT operations.

Description There are four major design points which continue with this enhanced SurePOS 700 Model E82 POS product that have determined the form and function of every model within the IBM SurePOS 4694 and SurePOS 700 families since the first model, the 4694-001, entered the market in 1993: • • • •
Flexibility and choices The SurePOS 700 provides more choices than any other point-of-sale systems on the market today.
Industry-standard design Product flexibility to allow for customer choices Investment protection Basic functions being standard
The choice of footprint allows you to optimize your checkstand layout. The wider footprint models provide the capability to integrate any of the IBM POS keyboards, printers, and full-screen displays, and up to two of the customer displays on top of the system unit. The narrower footprint models provide the capability to integrate the Retail POS Keyboard or the Retail POS Keyboard with Card Reader, any of the printers, and one of the customer displays. An integrated configuration is used when a traditional POS appearance is desired or when the POS is sunken in a well at the checkstand.
Since the SurePOS 4694 introduction, the marketplace has changed, which changed the concept of how these design points were satisfied.
Industry-standard design It is no longer acceptable for point-of-sale terminals to be totally unique, or proprietary, devices. They must be able to run standard PC applications and attach standard PC peripherals as well as point-of-sale unique peripherals and software. The IBM SurePOS 700 utilizes industry standards throughout its design. As a PCI bus machine, the SurePOS 700 provides a platform with the most widely utilized format within the PC industry. SurePOS 700 is a retail-hardened PC and, as such, utilizes: • • • • • •
Both wide and narrow models can be used in a distributed configuration, where the system unit is placed under the counter and the input/output devices are placed on the checkstand at the retailer′s discretion. All models can be mounted on their side using the vertical mounting stand, which provides at least one inch of air clearance for each vented side. So, the system unit can either be set on a shelf or screwed to a wall under the counter in a distributed configuration. Please take note of the physical dimensions. They are similar to the SurePOS 4694 with the exception of a slight increase in height. Since the narrow models consume less space, they may be preferred in distributed configurations. The narrow models are usually better for portable carts, such as those used in amusement parks and garden centers. Once the model determination is made, there are many more options that allow the retailer to customize the SurePOS 700 to their specific environment. One or two hard disk drives can be added. Then there are the retail peripherals. Worldwide, you may choose from various printers, keyboards, displays, and cash drawers. Add to that the multitude of OEM peripherals and the solution options grow exponentially.
The standard PC componentry of Intel processors Standard socketed memory DIMMs RS-232 ports PC keyboard and mouse ports 3.5-inch hard drives Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports, a parallel port, and SVGA video
When IBM 4690 OS customers requested that the next SurePOS 700 models provide the memory retention function they came to rely upon with earlier, proprietary IBM point-of-sale terminals, industry standards were not compromised. The UPS option provides up to 1.5 hours of power to the planar in the event of a store power outage with the APM and ACPI architecture used in the PC industry. APM and ACPI bring the familiar memory retention function not only to IBM 4690 OS users, but also to DOS and Windows users.
Investment protection IBM understands the time and investment retailers have in their POS software applications. The enhanced SurePOS 700 models support the 4690 applications with the 4690 Operating System and the large install base of DOS applications, so the extensive customization work done by many retailers isn′t lost just because they move to a newer, open hardware platform. Many times capital budgets are tight, making it difficult for retailers to justify moving to an entirely new POS system. Through the introduction of SurePorts all SurePOS 700s support the
Since it is a retail-hardened PC, standard operating systems, such as Windows, run on the next-generation SurePOS 700. Drivers for Windows are provided. There are also retail-industry-standard OPOS and JavaPOS drivers. Recognizing from the beginning the need for remote program load, all SurePOS 700s support the Intel PXE protocol.

majority of the 4694 input/output devices, so a retailer can upgrade to a SurePOS 700 system unit and continue to use their 4694 input/output devices to minimize capital expenditure. SurePorts are the selectable and upgradeable POS ports. The default is an all powered USB selection or you can select the mix of RS-485 and powered USB. These ports are selected when ordering and can also be upgraded later on in the field. Retailers expect to keep their POS terminals at least five to seven years after they purchase them, so it is important to allow for technology enhancements whenever possible. All SurePOS 700s have socketed memory so that more memory can be added in the future, as needed. All models have socketed processors to allow for processor upgrades as the application grows and needs more horsepower.
Basic functions standard The SurePOS 700 has audio support standard on the planar, which reduces the number of feature card slots needed and, therefore, allows the system unit to be shorter. Every SurePOS 720, 740, and 780 has SVGA video standard on the planar for the full-screen and GUI applications.
