WORM cartridges The TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 WORM data cartridges are designed to provide non-alterable, non-rewritable tape media for long-term records retention. When the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive detects a WORM cartridge, the tape drive prevents overwrite or changes to existing customer data. New data can be appended to existing data until the cartridge capacity is reached. WORM Cartridges are available in two sizes, 60 or 300 GB native capacity. IBM makes no representation or warranty regarding vendor products or services. Product positioning The new 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive is the follow-on for the highly successful TotalStorage Enterprise tape drive 3590. The addition of the lower capacity cartridge and WORM cartridges further extend the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive′s capabilities into new application areas such as retention managed data and optical replacement. The 3592 Model J1A is supported in a wide range of environments including selected IBM zSeries, S/390 , IBM iSeries  , AS/400 , IBM pSeries  , RS/6000 , IBM xSeries , Netfinity  , Sun, and Hewlett Packard servers, as well as servers running Microsoft  Intel  -compatible Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 2003, and Linux. It has significant potential performance and capacity benefits over the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise tape drive 3590, as well as other 1/2-inch drives such as the 3480, 3490, or 3490E. It now offers additional benefits with WORM and smaller capacity tape cartridges. Economy cartridges New short-length Economy 60 GB native capacity data cartridges provide an affordable alternative to scaling 300 GB cartridges. Economy cartridges are available in both standard rewritable or WORM cartridges. 3592 Tape Drive support Support for the new WORM and Economy cartridges requires a new level of microcode firmware level that will be shipped on all 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives beginning May 21, 2004. Installed 3592 Model J1A Tape drives attached to a 3592 Model J70 or 3590 Model A60 Controller should order an update to the controller microcode firmware, which will also update the microcode firmware on all attached 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives. Stand-alone open-system attached 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives should order the microcode firmware update on each individual tape drive. The 3592 Model J1A is supported in a wide range of automation platforms including the TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library 3494, the StorageTek ACS, and now with this announcement, the TotalStorage UltraScalable Tape Library 3584. It is also available in rackmount configurations. The new Economy cartridge and WORM enhancements expand the types of workloads that may benefit from the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. By applying the 3592 to a wider range of workloads across a wide range of supported servers you may be able to simplify your tape processing environment, while improving efficiency. 3494 Tape Library support Support for the new WORM and Economy cartridges in an Enterprise Tape Library 3494 requires a new level of microcode firmware level in the 3494 library manager that will be shipped on all 3494 Models L12, L22, and HA1 beginning May 21, 2004. An update to the microcode firmware on the library manager of any installed 3494 Model HA1, L10, L12, L14, or L22 should be ordered to obtain this support. Installation of this firmware will also update the drive microcode firmware on any installed open-system attached 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. With this support, WORM and standard tape cartridges in both sizes can be intermixed within the same 3494 Tape Library. The new 3592 Model J1A WORM capability is designed for large capacity, retention data applications where there is a requirement for non-erasable, non-rewritable media. Consider WORM in the following environments: • Where large quantities of digital media in non-erasable, non-rewritable form must be retained for long, often indeterminate periods of time. • Current 3590 tape drive installations in 3494, StorageTek ACS, or stand-alone environments where: 3584 Tape Library support The TotalStorage UltraScalable Tape Library 3584 now includes support of 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives.
