Further Information – EOL and Biasing The Protégé network runs on an Encrypted 485 LAN, in daisy-chain configuration. Each end of the LAN, i.e. the two end most modules, must be terminated with the EOL jumper as per below;
The network must also be biased at ONE end using the bias jumpers on the two end most modules on the LAN. Biasing ensures that the RS485 network is in a nown state . By default, the Controller Biasing jumpers are set to LOW. The biasing jumpers are shown below;
Zone Connections Zones are connected to the panel as shown below. Two 1K resistors per zone give 4 state monitoring.
Zones can also be programmed with 2k2/6k8 resistors to allow for easy cut over from other systems. EOL values are programmable per zone (i.e. one can be 1k/1k, another can be 2k2/6k8), except for Keypads when they are running in Duplex mode. Zone programming will be covered later on.

PGMs
Open collector outputs (PGM) are connected as per the diagram to the left. PGMs 3 and 4 on the Protégé controller can switch a maximum of 50mA, exceeding this amount can cause damage to the PGM output. The PGMs switch to ground so ensure that anything connected to the PGM is powered from a +12V source.
Sirens Sirens are connected as per the diagram below:
Sirens are connected to PGMs 1 and 2, which supply a steady 12VDC power supply up to 2A (Total) (if either PGM exceeds 1.1A the PGM will automatically shut down).
AC and Battery Connection 16v AC power supply is connected are per the diagram below (16VAC 40VA Max):

Note that deep discharge prevention will shut down the controller when the battery gets to the point where it can longer provide a reliable level of voltage and current to the controller.
Telephone Connections Telephone connections to the controller are as follows:
The Protégé controller has a Secondary telephone line input which can be used (if programmed to do so) as a backup if the Primary line stops functioning. It should be noted that the Secondary line cannot be used for anything except for out going, Primary line backup.
Ethernet Connections The Protégé controller comes equipped with a 10/100 Ethernet connection port. The Ethernet port can be used as both a permanent connection as part of a Protégé LAN or as a temporary connection for programming of the system. A crossover cable is not required as the Ethernet port on the

controller is a smart connection and will Autosense as required.
Expansion Connector The Protégé controller comes with a 40 pin expansion connector used to connect serial communication, parallel, memory and special function interface devices. The Expansion Connector comes with 4 daughterboard mounting holes as per the diagram below:

Controller defaulting procedure When working with a brand new controller, it is recommended that it be factory defaulted. To factory default a Protégé controller, perform the steps below: 1. Power down the controller if it is powered up, ensuring that all connections including batteries are disconnected. 2. On the controller, locate the Configuration Switch (pictured below)
3. Turn ON switch 4 (four) 4. Power up the controller by turning on the AC power supply 5. Once the green status LED is flashing again, move DIP switch 4 (four) back to the OFF position The system will now be defaulted with all programming and settings returned to factory configuration.
Note
•
If the controller being defaulted has already been programmed into your Protégé System Management suite software you will also need to delete the site it is related to.
•
Keep in mind that the Protégé System Management Suite software requires that at least one site be setup, so if you are deleting the only site in the software just follow the prompts after you have deleted the site to restart the software and add a new site.
•
Also, the IP address for the controller will not be defaulted, it will remain the same address as it was prior to the defaulting procedure (changing IP address of the controller is covered in “Keypad Programming Basics”).

Addressing Keypads When the Protégé controller is started for the first time, a keypad will have the address of 250. Keypads must be assigned an address that is valid for the memory profile selected in the controller, therefore upon power up, the first keypad on the system must be addressed. Use the following procedure to address a keypad on the Protégé system: 1. Power up the Protégé controller 2. When the version number appears on the keypad, press the [X] button on the keypad. This will enter keypad programming. 3. Press the [ENTER] key to confirm entry to keypad programming menu (screen shown below)

Full Module Update and Initialise/Restart 1. If not already logged in, log in as installer 2. Press [4] for Install menu 3. Press [8] for System menu 4. Press [1] to Network 5. Press [4] for Update and Initialise Init and reboot modules on the network will program the module with the configuration settings that are programmed in the controller and then perform a reset of the module. This should be performed when programming of the system is completed.

Testing & Controlling If you are not using the Protege demo case, Locate Zone CP001:01 on the controller and ensure you have 2 x 1k resistors connected as per the diagram on the zone connection section.

Changing Memory Profiles The following is the method for changing the controller’s Memory Profile. 1. At the keypad, login as Installer (default: 000000) *Main Menu*_____ 2. User____,,,,,
2. Then [4] for Install Menu 3. Followed by [8] for the Advanced menu 4. Then [3] for Profiles 5. And finally [1] for Profile select. The following screen should now be in view

6. Now use the [1] and [3] buttons on the keypad to scroll through the available memory profiles. 7. When the applicable memory profile has been chosen, press the [ENTER] key. A warning should now be visible on the screen This will reset__ all panel data! , Upload the panel_ to backup data. , Press [ENTER] to_ continue.______ , Press [MENU] or__ [CLEAR to exit.!,
8. To continue with the default you must press [ENTER], this will then reset the panel and setup the memory to profile chosen

Introduction to the Protégé Software The Protege System is a powerful integrated alarm and access control management system designed to provide integration with building automation, apartment complex control and HVAC in one flexible package. Communication is over a proprietary high speed protocol across an encrypted local area network and AES Encrypted Proprietary RS-485 module network. Using modular-based hardware design, system installers have the flexibility to accommodate any installation from small to large, residential or commercial.

Starting Protégé System Management Suite The Protégé System Management Suite must be installed on the machine that you are logging in from. To start the Protégé System Management Suite, click on the Protégé icon that is available on the desktop or browse to the program from the Windows Start Menu.
Logging In To Protégé System Management Suite When the Protégé System Management Suite starts, the Protégé Logon window will be displayed:
Server Type of server that the Protégé System Management Suite will connect to. Select either 'Local machine' or 'Remote Machine'. Do not select the Remote Machine option unless you are a remote client and connecting to a server that is not located on the current computer. Information will be provided from the system administrator if this option is enabled.
Protocol The protocol to use when connecting to a server remotely. Select either 'COM/DCOM (With call backs)', 'COM/DCOM (Without call backs)' or 'TCP/IP'.

Computer Name/IP Address The name of the server to connect to if logging in remotely using COM/DCOM (With call backs) or COM/DCOM (Without call backs). Otherwise the IP Address of the server to connect to if logging in remotely using TCP/IP. Enter the IP address in the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Authentication The type of authentication method to use when logging in. Select either 'User Name and Password' or 'Windows Authentication'. Windows Authentication will enable logging in to Protégé using the current Windows User credentials. Information will be provided from the system administrator if this option is to be required.
Logon
The User Name if logging on using User Name and Password authentication.
Password The User Password if logging on using User Name and Password authentication.
Note •
Some options are not available when connecting to a local machine.
•
The default logon is Admin and the default password is Admin.
•
If you are logging on to the Protégé System Management Suite for the first time, or no site is currently set up in the system, the New Site Wizard will automatically be invoked upon start up.

Adding a new Site
1.
To add a site, select the New Site command from the System ribbon bar. This command will invoke the New Site wizard:
Site Name The name of the site.
Organization Name The organization in charge of the site.
Description A brief description of the site.

The Ribbon Bar The Protégé Ribbon Bar is located at the top of the Protégé System Management Suite application window and allows complete navigation of all programmable functions.
Similar to a horizontal toolbar the ribbon bar groups common operations together and provides an icon that can be selected for each function within the group. Where a group has more than one item a drop down of other items can be selected. The functionality of each ribbon's commands are outlined in the following sections.

Event and Alarm Window

Protégé Status Bar The Protege Status Bar is located at the bottom of the Protege application window. It indicates communication status, alarm status and the current operator. When the communication status light is red, this indicates that there is NO active connection to a controller, and likewise indicates that there IS an active connection to a controller when the light is green.
Protégé Quick-Link Button Throughout the Protege System Management Suite interface, extensive use of the Quick Link Button is made. Where applicable, Quick Link Buttons are located near an object (such as a text box or list box) to assist in adding and modifying the current data contained in that object. Quick Link Buttons are also provided to execute functions such as generating random pin numbers or getting a card number from an enrollment station.

Connecting to the Controller There are a number of different ways to connect to the Protégé controller (including via modem which is at 2400bps), for the purpose of this training session, we will connect via the onboard Ethernet port. The Protégé controller does not require a cross over cable, it automatically senses if there’s a direct connection to a PC and adjusts accordingly. The Protégé controller comes with a predefined IP address, 192.168.1.2
Configuring your IP Address In order to connect to the panel via Ethernet, you laptop IP address MUST be in the same subnet as your Protégé Controller. To set complete the following steps: •
In your computer’s “Network Connections” , right-click the “Local Area Connection” icon and select “Properties”. The window below should appear

Getting Controller Events By default the live events are not uploaded in to the Event and Alarm window. To enable live event view (Most common with direct connected controllers) follow the procedures below. 1.
To enable live event upload, select the Controller Ribbon from the Protege Ribbon Bar.
2.
Select the Panel Options command from the Controller Ribbon.
3.
Select the controller you wish to upload events from in the Panel Options window and right click. This will invoke the Controller Panel Options context menu.
4.
From the context menu, select PROPERTIES. This will invoke the Controller Properties window.
5.
Select the Connection tab from the Controller Properties window.

Enable the 'Upload All Events after Connecting' box and select a Event Upload Frequency. The recommended setting is 2 seconds.

Programming – Zones In order to programme Zones into the controller, complete the following steps: 1. Click “Controller” on the top menu 2. Click the “Doors, Zones and PGMs” icon on the menu bar, and select “Zones”. All available zones will appear in the top window pane 3. Double-click the zone you wish to programme. The Zone programming window will open (see below)
4. Click in the “Name” text box and name the zone 5. Click on the “Areas and Zone Types” tab. Assign the zone to an Area. Assign a Zone Type 6. Click on the “Options” tab. Select any other options required. This is also the area of programming where 2k2/6k8 EOL resistors are selected.

Further Information – Updating Modules Changing the properties of a zone input that affects the connection of the zone, EOL or inversion requires an “Update Module” to be performed. This is done by right-clicking on the input module in question and selecting “Update Module” from the menu. In fact, when programming changes are made to any module in the system where the physical behaviour of that module is being altered, you need to perform an “Update Module”.

Programming – Sirens/Bells Sirens must be programmed for Area in the system. On the Protégé system, sirens are denoted as PGMs, on the panel for example, Siren or Bell outputs 1 and 2 are PGMs 1 and 2.
In order to programme Sirens into the system, complete the following steps: 1. Click on the “Controller” menu at the top of the page 2. Click “Local Areas”, then “Local Areas” 3. Make sure the “Programming (Areas(Local)) tab is selected. The complete Area list available on the system should be viewable 4. Double-click the Area that you wish to programme a Siren into. The Area programming window should now be open 5. Click the PGM tab, you should now see the PGM programming options (shown below)

Programming – Adding/Modifying User Access Levels To add a User Access Level to the site, complete the following steps: 1. Click on the “Site” menu at the top of the page 2. Click on the “Access Levels” icon

After any changes are made to a Reader Expander you must perform a module update, this is done by right-clicking on the module that changes have been made to and selecting “Update Module” from the menu
Further Information – Inverting lock relays In order to Invert a lock relay you must; 1. Choose the door you wish to alter in door programming 2. Double-click on the door to open it’s properties 3. Click on the PGMs tab 4. Click on the “…” button to hyperlink to the PGM (Lock relay) properties for that door 5. Click on the “Options” tab, then select “Invert PGM Output” 6. Click OK to confirm changes to PGM programming 7. Click OK to conform changes to Door programming 8. Click on the “Modules” button on the main menu, then select “Reader Expanders” 9. Right-click on the Reader expander related to the Door you’ve just altered and select “Update Module” 10. During the module update you should hear the lock relay click on and stay on

Programming – Creating/Managing Door Groups To create a new Door Group, complete the following steps: 1. Click on the “Controller” menu button at the top of the screen 2. Click on the “Groups” icon, then select Door Groups (as shown below). The Door Groups window will now open
3. Name the Door Group 4. Select a Door Group Schedule and Secondary door group if needed 5. Click on the “Doors” tab. Select the doors required for the Door Group 6. To modify a schedule for a specific door, click on the “...” button next the Schedule dropdown list. Click “OK” to close the Schedule window 7. Programming – Schedules To programme a new Schedule, complete the following steps: 1. Click on the “Site” menu at the top of the screen 2. Click on the “Controller Schedules” icon (as seen below)

Programming – Communications (Services) As an introduction to Comms programming on the Protégé system, we’ll programme a ContactID Comms Service. The following steps will get a basic ContactID Comms task running: 1. Click the “Controller” menu at the top of the page 2. Click on the “Services” icon (as shown below)
3. Double-click on an empty Service (an empty Service will have “None” as it’s “Service Type”). This will open a new Service window. 4. Double-click in the Name box and give the Service a name, for example “ContactID”. 5. Click on the “Service Type” dropdown list and select the “ContactID” service (as shown below)

6. Click “OK”. A new window will appear asking you to close and reopen the window in order to allow the change of Service Type to take effect (as shown below), click “OK”, then “OK” again to close the Service window
7. Re open the Service by double clicking on it in the Service list. The ContactID Service window will now open with new options 8. Click on the “General” tab, enter a 4 digit client code Please note! A Client Code can also be programmed into each Area, this client code will override the client code programmed into a Service 9. Click on the “Phone Number 1” dropdown list. Select an empty phone number. 10. Click the “...” button next to the phone number to edit the phone number details. Give the phone number a name, then enter the desired phone number in the “Phone Number” box. Click “OK” to confirm 11. Click on the “Options” tab. Select the appropriate options that are required 12. Click on the “Settings” tab. Select the appropriate setting that are required 13. Click “OK” to confirm changes to the new ContactID Service

Backing up & Restoring a Controller The following is the method for backing up the controller’s SQL database, as well as restoring a backup

Backup Procedure 1. Click on the “System” menu button at the top of the screen 2. Click on the “Backup Database” icon

Restore Procedure The follow procedure will restore the backup 1. Exercises Before beginning the following three exercises, please complete a full factory default of your panel using the defaulting procedure explained earlier. Ensure that any controllers previously programmed into your copy of the Protégé System Management Suite are deleted.
Exercise One •
Program the Front door reed (CP001:01) and the Warehouse PIR (CP001:02) into area 1 and call it “Warehouse“ and the other PIR (CP001:03) into an area called “Office”. Programme two users into the system. Julie has access to both areas and Mary has access to the Warehouse only.
