The IGEL Universal Desktop Our Universal Desktop strategy is unique and enables organizations to deliver all their serverbased applications, anywhere, with the best user experience, security, ease of management, and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO). The software, or firmware, embedded in every IGEL Universal Desktop is highly multi-functional and contains the industry’s largest collection of server-based protocols for connecting you to your centralized applications. We offer; Linux, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows Embedded CE. You only pay for what you need, with our Feature Packs; Entry, Standard and Advanced*. In addition, we make a broad range of hardware platforms to deliver the Universal firmware, with some models offering a modular design that includes features such as wireless, additional legacy ports and an optional internal Smartcard reader. Each Universal Desktop comes with IGEL’s Universal Management Suite; an extremely powerful yet easy to use software application that allows you to remotely deploy and manage your thin client estate. This keeps total cost of ownership to a minimum, accelerates return on investment (ROI), optimizes security and ensures maximum desktop productivity and uptime.

The IGEL Universal Desktop Advantages • Long-term thin client strategy. • You do not pay for unnecessary hardware or software. For example, you do not need to buy the most expensive hardware platform to deliver the Advanced Feature Pack. • Save money by consolidating more hardware, such as a PC and a telephone, into one affordable and easy to manage device. • Device life is extended since you can upgrade hardware connectivity mid-life and the flash memory for the Universal firmware has more than enough room for future software expansion. • The user experience is outstanding since you are not forced to deliver all applications, including multi-media, VoIP or video, via just one protocol. • New technology or security updates are delivered to every model very quickly. • Supporting an estate of IGEL Universal Desktops is easy due to firmware commonality, a single flash size per operating system and the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), with its consistent user interface regardless of what is being managed. The IGEL Universal Desktop gives you far greater long-term cost savings compared with traditional thin clients and more flexibility to handle whatever the future holds.
IGEL Product and Technical Support All customers with IGEL thin clients have free access to technical support from centers in Europe, the United States and Asia. In addition, you receive free updates to the IGEL Universal Management Suite as long as your devices support the latest UMS client. We maintain our firmware images for up to 3 years after a model reaches end of life, giving an exceptionally long service life. IGEL Universal Desktops offer extremely low running costs and are always kept up to date with the latest technology for delivering your server-based applications.
Reliability Built to Order IGEL Technology holds no stock in its channel. Instead, when you order IGEL thin clients, we assemble and flash the units at our warehouse facilities in Europe, North America and Asia. This means your devices undergo final flashing and testing the day they are sent to you, ensuring you get the latest firmware and best “out of the box” experience.

An Introduction to Thin Clients
Thin clients are the modern form of Personal Computers and Terminals. They provide access to applications running elsewhere on a network and have a keyboard, mouse and user experience just like a PC. Thin clients can be used for a wide variety of tasks including word processing, email, data processing, voice and multi-media. They are available as desktop, mobile and all-in-one LCD integrated devices. Unlike a PC, thin clients do not run applications and store no data; they simply collect key strokes, mouse clicks or audio/video input from the user and display the application interface.
Thin clients have major advantages over PCs and Terminals • Since applications are deployed centrally on a server, the whole IT infrastructure becomes far easier and less time consuming to manage. • There is far less to manage or misconfigure on a thin client and their remote management software dramatically reduces IT support desktop visits. • The total cost of desktop ownership is dramatically lower and IT budgets can typically be reduced by 25% or more since less “fire fighting” is needed. • Data is far more secure since it is centralized and backed-up, thus offering compliance with many data protection regulations. • No moving parts and no local hard disk make thin clients resistant to viruses and very reliable. The average lifetime of a thin client can be up to eight years with dramatic return of invest (ROI). • Organizational and IT change becomes much easier due to the speed and ease of rollout and deployment. • Thin clients use much less energy than PCs and can cut CO2 emissions by up to 52%, even if the additional server capacity and data center cooling is considered (Fraunhofer research paper). In some cases, energy savings can become an important ROI driver. Traditionally, thin clients have been used to connect to server-based Windows® applications running on Citrix® or Microsoft® using an architecture called terminal services. The server acted as an enormous “PC mainframe” that could share applications with many users concurrently.
4
Modern requirements of thin clients Today, there are far more ways to deliver applications than terminal services. A modern thin client should be able to deliver any server-based application, from old to new, and could include applications based on: • Windows Terminal-Services • Virtual PCs (VDI) • Voice over IP • Mainframe • Web • Multi-media • Blade PCs • Java This ability to access any network application, regardless of how it is delivered, is at the core of our design philosophy and is why we call our range of thin clients the IGEL Universal Desktop series.

Access all Server-based Applications The last decade has seen an explosion in the number of protocols and applications that allow a remote device to access a centralized application or data. Web 2.0, VoIP, VDI, multi-media and many more. To successfully utilize this trend, it is important to use the right protocol. The choice of delivering these applications centrally or natively. It gives the best user experience, the most flexibility and the least middleware costs. This concept is central to the IGEL Universal Desktop. Our devices come with one of the largest ranges of features in the industry so that you can access any application you need. Server-based Windows access All IGEL devices provide access to server-based Windows applications using Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP protocols. Virtualization All IGEL Universal Desktops with the Standard Feature Pack (or above) include multiple VDI connection brokers that can access virtual server-based desktops running on many different hypervisors including VMware, Citrix and Microsoft. Multi-media access IGEL Universal Desktops with the Advanced Feature Pack come with multi-media clients such as Flash Player or Microsoft Media Player. This includes the use of USB and Multimedia Redirection (MMR) as well as multi-media acceleration technologies like HDX. Web access All Standard level Feature Packs come with a native web browser. This allows access to any web site or web-based application, removing the need to host the browser centrally on a server. This saves money and removes a typical performance bottleneck in serverbased Windows infrastructures. Web services All Universal Desktops with Windows Embedded Standard, support .NET web services, making them very suitable for accessing modern web-based applications. Text terminal emulation Text terminal emulation allows you to use your IGEL device to access legacy green screen applications using a wide variety of formats such as DEC VT100 or IBM 3270. All Universal Desktops with the Standard Feature Pack come with an Ericom PowerTerm terminal emulation client. Java All Linux or Windows Embedded Standard based Universal Desktops come with a Java SE Runtime Environment, allowing the terminal to run Java applications locally. This makes the terminal extremely powerful and removes a potential performance bottleneck from your server infrastructure.
6
Telecommunications The Linux Advanced Feature Pack includes a powerful VoIP client that can work with modern telephone switches. This allows you to consolidate your phone and PC into one device saving money, deskspace and hassle. ERP access The Advanced Feature Pack supports a native SAP GUI. This provides strong SAP functionality and removes the need to set-up server middleware and infrastructure to drive an SAP GUI. Document reader The Standard and Advanced Feature Packs on Linux and Windows Embedded Standard includes a PDF viewer making them suitable for accessing corporate documents on an intranet without having to host any server-based applications. Printing The Standard and Advanced Feature Packs offer ThinPrint support, allowing bandwidth friendly remote printing from your server-based Windows applications. IGEL Linux-based devices also have a built-in print server so they can be used to provide inexpensive and manageable remote printing without the expense of buying a network printer (great for light print loads). X Windows All Linux-based IGEL Universal Desktops can access graphical Unix applications that support the X Windows protocol. Automated data input IGEL devices support many different ways of entering data. This includes touch-screen support and voice dictation solutions from industry leaders. If you have special requirements for data input please consult your Authorized IGEL Partner or local sales office.
The Best Peripheral Support, Security and Connectivity Options Excellent peripheral connectivity IGEL Universal Desktops can connect to almost any USB peripheral, such as a printer, scanner or smart phone – even in virtual desktop environments running VMware View or Citrix HDX. When other applications, such as serverbased Windows Terminal Services, are in use, the IGEL thin clients support the embedded Fabulatech* USB redirection client included in the Advanced Firmware Package, allowing external hardware to be connected correctly with your virtual desktop or server-based Windows PC. *The server-side software must be purchased separately from Fabulatech.
Protect your network and data with bullet proof security IGEL Universal Desktops go way beyond the inherent security advantages of thin clients. All our devices support smartcard readers and some models can have these as an internal option. This allows two factor authentication during log-in and also productivity enhancements such as smooth roaming between shared desktops and sub-ten second log-in times with Citrix Hot Desktop (included in the Windows Embedded Standard 2009 Advanced Feature Pack). We also work with other security devices such as USB tokens. To protect data, all IGEL Universal Desktops can have their USB ports disabled or made read-only using our Universal Management Suite.

What are the main benefits of IGEL Universal Management Suite? Easy-to-use IGEL Universal Management Suite combines an intuitive user interface with point-and-click simplicity to manage everything on a thin client including all hardware and software settings. No scripting is necessary to control a thin client’s configuration. The user interface is very similar to the local system administration console on the thin client, with the addition of some additional remote management functionality. Setup is wizard driven and only takes 20 minutes if the integrated server-based database is used. This means your administrators can be productive very quickly, changes can be made on the fly and errors are minimized. Open The IGEL Universal Management Suite server can be run on all popular versions of Microsoft Windows® Server and Linux. It supports a wide variety of databases including Oracle®, DB2®, Microsoft SQL Server 2000®, SQL Server 2005® and PostgreSQL. It also can interface with Active Directory so you can maximize the benefits of your existing management infrastructure too. The console is based on Java, making system administration possible from any device with a Java Runtime Environment.
IGEL Universal Management Suite - typical screen
Secure The management infrastructure is extremely secure using encrypted communications (SSL) for both communication between each console and the server and each server with its clients. There is also a secure certificate relationship between each thin client and its Universal Management Suite server, so that an unauthorized server can’t ever take control of IGEL thin clients on the network. Friendly to your network Because IGEL Universal Management Suite uses standard protocols such as HTTP and FTP for communication, you don’t need to open additional firewall ports, keeping your network security to a maximum. Sending large images over your WAN can be kept to a minimum through the use of local FTP servers or the Buddy Update feature, which transforms an already updated IGEL thin client into the image source for other local clients on the network.
A demonstration of ‘Shadowing’
Robust and reliable IGEL thin clients find their management server on first connect using standard domain names. They do not use the less reliable method of making a PXE broadcast. This is a more reliable way of establishing thin client – management server communications. In addition, IGEL thin clients come with a Fail Safe update mechanism that means even in the event of a power loss during re-imaging, the client will boot back to its previous good configuration.

Scaleable IGEL Universal Management Suite can not only handle many thousands of thin clients due to its use of modern SQL databases and a multi-threaded architecture, it can also manage many complex features. The complexity of each feature is taken away due to the point-and-click interface. In addition, IGEL Universal Management Suite can support large or global organizations by allowing multiple system administrators, each with a different span of control and level of authority. Hence support responsibilities can be safely delegated throughout the most complex organizations. Efficient and productive IGEL Universal Management Suite greatly boosts support staff productivity. Lights-out management can be achieved using scheduled or reoccurring events and thin clients can be remotely shut down or booted. It also allows IT support to assist users using VNC shadowing of the thin client’s screen. With this approach, problems can be identified and solutions demonstrated remotely.
This shows the thin client´s current properties as well as profiles assigned to it
Efficient management of large organizations Many thin clients can be identified and changed at once using grouping and profiles. By applying a profile to a group of thin clients, the administrator can change the settings of whole departments with a few mouse clicks. When employees are relocated to another department, the administrator can easily apply the new settings with drag-and-drop simplicity. In order to identify clients that are spread over several groups, the administrator can define additional views. Fast roll-out and changes IGEL thin clients can be automatically assigned to a group and given a profile on first connect. This can be done by reading into IGEL Universal Management Suite a CSV file, supplied by IGEL, containing the thin clients’ MAC addresses. The thin clients can then be automatically assigned to a group and profile using these MAC addresses or other assignment rules such as their sub-net location. This makes the setup of an IGEL thin client no more complex than taking it out of the box and plugging it in!
An example of a user configurable view
Reporting IGEL Universal Management Suite has powerful reporting features that allow system administrators to build complex reports that greatly assist in support management. These reports help to detect problems and allow the administrator to track all configuration changes.
Re-occurring scheduled jobs can be configured to not execute on certain dates, e.g. public holidays

IGEL Universal Desktops – The Green Alternative For organizations looking to reduce their carbon footprint, electronic waste and energy bills, thin clients have strong credentials when compared with PCs. The prestigious Fraunhofer Institute in Germany found that, even when the additional server electricity and data center air conditioning is factored in, thin clients can cut CO2 emissions by up to 52% compared with an average desktop PC when using 32 bit Windows terminal services (Citrix) for server-based desktop hosting. This increases to 72% if 64 bit terminal services is used to deliver Windows applications from the server. These energy savings can offer a six year payback or less on electrical energy costs alone (US Department of Energy commercial electricity costs per KWh 2009 in the NE United States). In addition to reducing CO2 and energy, thin clients generate 66% less electrical waste. We were one of the first thin client vendors world wide to ensure all our devices are WEEE and RoHS compliant. Every device bought in Europe can be recycled free of charge at end of life upon customer request.

Certifications for IGEL Thin Clients IGEL thin clients are manufactured in accordance with the following certifications and conformations: IGEL Series; IGEL one, UD2, and UD3 have been accredited the Energy Star 5.0 certificate by the Energy Protection Agency (EPA). Only the top 25% of the market fulfill the criteria, ensuring the energy consumption is in accordance with the Energy Star 5.0 specifications. These specifications include: less than 15 Watt in idle mode and less than 2.7 Watt in Standby/sleep mode and Wake on LAN functionality. Also, power management is included in IGEL firmware for operating systems, Windows Embedded Standard and Linux. The UL / CUL mark of conformity is the most accepted proof that a product complies with the American and Canadian safety requirements. This represents the most recognized symbol for product safety.
IGEL thin clients with the TÜV/GS mark of conformity are checked with regard to the safety-related requirements of the low-voltage guideline of RWTÜV. In addition, the GS mark of conformity certifies the high ergonomic requirements of all IGEL thin client products. The “CE mark of conformity” stands for “Communauté Européenne” (European Community). IGEL Technology guarantees that the production of the IGEL thin clients complies with the “EMC” (electromagnetic compatibility) guidelines and that the low-voltage guideline applies to equipment safety. Within the framework of EMC testing, the CE mark guarantees that our products don’t generate any electromagnetic interference and are adequately protected against external cross interference. The FCC mark of conformity confirms that an electronic device has been tested by the Federal Communications commission (USA) for compliance with admissible high frequencies. This mark is mandatory for electronic products that are sold in the USA. This affects all devices that are equipped with a microprocessor. Frequencies that are not shielded by means of an appropriate casing or other measures may cause faults in other equipment. There are 2 categories of FCC mark: • Class A: For equipment that will be used exclusively in an industrial and commercial environment. • Class B: For equipment that will also be used in residential areas. According to this EU regulation, the “Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (WEEE) directive, the manufacturers are responsible for the redemption and disposal of their old equipment. As one of the first manufacturers IGEL offered immediate, cost-free (member states of the European Union only), and easy redemption service for thin clients purchased after 8/15/2005. With this, IGEL complies with the EU law, effective August 15th, 2005, for the disposal of old electronic equipment. The RoHS directive (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances) requires companies to forgo the use of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and brominated flame retardants in the production of electronic or electric equipment. Every IGEL thin client in the UD2, UD3, UD5, UD7 and UD9 series is being produced according to the RoHS European Union directive, which went into effect on 1st July, 2006. IGEL was one of the first thin client manufacturers whose entire product line complied with the EU regulation. The European Union Regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) shall improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. IGEL fulfils this regulation by informing customers and partners about materials on the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in our products in a concentration above 0.1 % weight by weight (w/w).
