Chapter 1 Illinois Driver’s License • Approved DE classes include at least 30 hours of classroom study and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. pg-2 • You must have your instruction permit with you in order to drive in class. Pg-2 • You may also practice drive with one of your parents, a legal guardian or a responsible adult approved by your parents sitting in the front seat. This adult must be at least 21, have a license for the type of vehicle you are driving, and have at least one year of driving experience. Pg-2
Chapter 1 • You have to present written certification from your parent, legal guardian or, if there is no parent or legal guardian, a responsible adult age 21 or older, that you have a minimum of 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice time, including 10 hours of night time driving. Chapter 1 • Age Restrictions-must be 18 to obtain a valid driver’s license in Ill. The following exceptions apply: • If you are 16 or 17, and have successfully completed an approved DE class: present written certification that you have completed 50 hours of practice driving, of which 10 must be night time, held a valid permit for 9 months, and you are sufficiently prepared and able to safely operate a motor vehicle; and pass the three parts of the driver’s license exam. Chapter 3 Graduated Driver Licensing Program • Permit Phase-Drivers Age 15 Know All. Pg-21 • Initial Licensing Phase-Drivers Ages 16-17. Pg-2122 • Full Licensing Phase-Drivers Ages 18-20. Chapter 4 Traffic Laws • Safety Belt Law-Safety belts must be worn by all drivers and front seat passengers age 8 and over. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that all front-seat passengers ages 8-16 obey this law. Pg-25 • Drivers under age 18 are required to limit passengers to one in the front seat and the number of safety belts in the back seat. However, during the first year of their license (or until they reach age 18, whichever occurs first) they are limited to only one passenger under age 20 (except immediate family, including siblings or children of the driver).
Chapter 4 • Speed limit-The maximum speed limit in Illinois is 65 mph on rural interstate highways where posted. Pg-26 • Legal Speed Limit Box on Pg-27. • Signaling and Turning-In a business or residential area you must give a continuous turn signal for at least 100 feet before turning. In other areas the signal must be given at least 200 feet before turning. Pg-32 • Know the hand and arm signals. Pg-32
Chapter 4 • Special Stops-You do not always need to stop when meeting a stopped school bus on a roadway with four or more lanes. You do not need to stop if you are traveling in the opposite direction of the bus. Pg-34 • Railroad Crossing-You must always stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail when a STOP sign is posted or a signal is given either electrically or by a flagperson. Pg-35

Chapter 5 Sharing The Road • Lane Usage-Slower traffic must drive in the right lane. The left lane id for passing and turning. Pg-43 • Hitchhiking-It is illegal to hitchhike. Pg-44 • Joggers and Walkers-They should face oncoming traffic and remember to look and listen for cars. Pg-44 • Motorcycles-More than 50 percent of all motorcycle collisions occur at intersections. Chapter 6 Driving under the Influence (DUI) • Blood-Alcohol Concentration (BAC)-It is illegal to drive if your BAC is .08 percent or higher. If your 21 or older. Under 21 is 0.00 percent. Chapter 7 Traffic Crashes • Crash Reports-Regardles of fault, a crash report must be filed by the driver of a vehicle if the crash involves death, bodily injury or property damage of more than $1,500. Pg-56 • Safety Responsibility Law-When you are involved in a crash that causes personal injury, the death of a person or more the $500 in damage to property, you must file a crash report. Chapter 9 Roadway Signs • You will have to correctly identify 15 signs on the test. Make sure you are able to identify the signs by the sign only (color and shape), no writing. You also need to be able to identify the sigh for a slow moving vehicle. Pgs 65-79 • Workers Ahead-The minimum fine for speeding in a construction zone is $375 for a first offense and $1000 for repeat offenders. The law increases fines to up to $10,000 and provides for a three-month to two-year driver’s license suspension for motorists who fail to yield to emergency vehicles or injure or kill state highway workers, fighters or police officers. Chapter 12 Equipment For Safe Driving • Safety Belts-Passenger vehicles must have two sets of safety belts in the front seat. Without these belts, 1965 or later models may not be sold in Illinois. Also, 1965 or later models licensed in Illinois may not be driven without safety belts. Pg-98 • Windows-Must be approved safety glass. Windshield must be free of snow, ice, moisture, and any defects that can distort vision. Vehicles are not allowed to have tinted windows on the front windshield or front side windows, unless the driver has a medical exception from a certified physician. You may have a 6-inch strip of tinting along the entire length at the top of the front windshield. Pg-98
Chapter 12 • Televisions-No motor vehicle may have a television set that can be seen from the driver’s seat. Pg-99 • Radar Detectors-Possession and the use of radar jamming devices is prohibited in all vehicles. Possession of radar detectors is prohibited in commercial vehicles.
