Rather than store data on spinning magnetic platters, as is currently the case with hard-drives, solid state drives rely on NAND flash, the storage media used for most digital cameras and camcorders, although on a larger scale: storing and transferring data electronically in “blocks” that can be easily accessed as opposed to hard-drives which have longer seek times to find or access data. PNY’s OPTIMA SSD is comprised of MLC Flash which offers the right mix of performance and durability with 240MB/sec read and 130MB/s write speeds that easily outperform the fastest hard drives. Also featured on the drives, is 64MB of onboard cache – a DRAM buffer that ensures the SSD performs at its best by reducing the possibility of bottlenecks within data transfers. OPTIMA SSDs are TRIM enabled which provides a safeguard from performance degradation, allowing the drive to stay closer to its peak performance over time. The drives are compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP as well as Linux and Mac OS X and later.
