Index Instruments PTR refractometers General The PTR range of refractometers has been engineered for high accuracy, excellent temperature stability, reliability and ease of use. The temperature range is controlled electronically using Peltier Cell technology, removing the need for an external thermocirculator, resulting in significant cost, space and energy savings. All versions of the PTR refractometer provide electronic temperature control to extremely high levels of stability at any selected temperature between 15°C and 50°C. The simple-to-use PTR2a and PTR2aX are provided with a remote control unit for changing all of the instruments' settings. The PTR46 and PTR46X can be set by the operator to any temperature over the full range. All versions continuously show the sample temperature on the backlit LCD display to a resolution of 0.1°C or 0.01°C, depending on whether RI is displayed to 4 or 5 decimal places respectively. Wide range All PTR models operate over the wide refractive index (RI) range of 1.32 to 1.68. The PTR2a and PTR46 have been designed to give an accuracy of 1 in the 4th decimal place of RI over the full range. The 'X' models (the PTR2aX and PTR46X) give an enhanced accuracy to 5 in the 5th decimal place of RI over the range 1.32 to 1.45 with only slightly reduced accuracy to 1.68 RI. Refractive index is measured by the 'critical angle' method, similar to the method used in a visual Abbe refractometer. As back reflected light is used, very dark or difficult samples such as chocolate sauce, coffee, honey and dairy products can be measured as easily as clear samples. The PTR46 models have a special 'emulsion' mode to improve measurement of turbid samples. All instruments in the series have no moving parts, an almost indestructible sapphire prism and a sealed casing. They also offer a selection of optional sample cells, making the PTR both extremely versatile and capable of operating in harsh environments. The PTR range has been engineered to operate in a wide range of ambient conditions. for more extreme conditions, an auxiliary heatsink is available to ensure accurate control when, for example, cold samples are to be measured in the higher ambient temperatures found in tropical climates. PTR 2a & 2aX models The PTR 2 series has only two operating keys; ZERO and PRINT. All of the instrument's conditions and settings are arranged at the touch of a button, using the remote control unit. The initial reading is either 3 or 9 seconds depending on the scale resolution, the time to stability depends on the temperature difference between the sample and the prism. If a printer is connected, the operator can obtain a print-out by pressing the PRINT key (or use a bar code reader). Settings for the analysis conditions - Scale, Temperature, Sample Stabilisation Time, Time and Date, Printing of Results or Downloading to a PC, are achieved in just a few seconds. Once set, the conditions are locked until the remote control is reused to change the information. Therefore the conditions cannot be changed by inquisitive button pushers or 'meddlers'. The 46 button keypad, with dedicated function and alphanumeric keys in the standard 'Qwerty' layout gives easy access to the many programmable feature of these instruments. A simple key press gives access to a maximum of 14 scales; Refractive Index, Brix, Temperature Corrected Brix, temperature Corrected RI and up to 10 user programmable scales. You can also have a choice of 4 measuring modes: in 'Continuous' mode, the PTR reads all the time and samples can be read in the same way as the PTR 2a model. 'Single Scan' mode allows you to program the instrument to wait a pre-set time to allow for stabilisation and then to scan, display and hold the result. By selecting 'Autoprint' mode, the operator can set a time interval for automatic print-outs to monitor a change or flowing sample. In 'Stability' mode, the automatic measuring system within the instrument intelligently decides when the sample has come to a stable reading, and only then outputs the result. The operator can set the level of stability to ensure that the accuracy required is obtained time after time, in the shortest possible time. The 'Qwerty' format keypad on the PTR 46 models make entering 'GLP' (Good Laboratory Practice) data straightforward. Time, date and instrument serial number can be ouput to a printer or PC together with every reading, and the instrument can also be set up to ask for a number, or up to 6 other parameters specified by the user, to fully identify the sample. the titles of these parameters can have up to 20 characters (letters, numbers or spaces) and so can be in any language.
